I love this eyeshadow! I’m very surprised at previous reviews saying that it didn’t show up on them. If it has been reformulated as previous reviews mentioned, I’m sure that I have the newest formulation since it was purchased within the last few months.
It definitely shows up on me. I am quite pale, but I think that it would show up on skin tones that are quite a bit darker than mine. It’s a warm leaning, light brown satin. It has a very fine shimmer that only shows in a very subtle way when it catches the light at certain angles.
I use this as a one and done shadow, occasionally using a small amount of ivory shadow on my brown bone to blend it more. The last time I wore it, I applied it at 8am (without any primer) and it lasted with no creasing until I washed my face at around 10pm.The packaging is very nice with a mirror in the compact.
I don’t know of any other shadows that are close to the same shade and texture. It’s very smooth, soft and easy to blend. It definitely shows up but not in an attention grabbing way. It’s perfect for a natural but polished look.

I bought this after reading so many fantastic reviews particularly as a one wash colour. This is a very mediocre shadow. I have dark hair and pale skin and the colour makes me look tired and washed out. I wouldn’t recommend this as a one wash colour at all.

I bought this based on rave reviews and wanted to use it as an all-over-the-lid eyeshadow for a quick everyday look. Sadly it doesn’t work well on me all over the lid; I’m NC 20, dark hair and brown eyes and every time I’ve worn it all over the lid I get comments that I look tired. Not good; not sure why it applies so dark on me. Decided to use porcelain (Burberry) all over the lid and Pale Barley as a crease color, and it works much better for me applied this way (awake and polished). Oh yes, it is a light taupe shade with gold shimmer (very fine) with superb texture (blends beautifully) and good wear (about 8 hours for my oily lids on top of a cream eyeshadow as base).

Well today seems to be the day for me to rate what I feel are over-rated products, or at the very least, were misses for me. Burberry, for whatever reason, re-formulated Pale Barley some time ago. Supposedly the older formula was a different (and many say nicer/better) shade.
I’ve tried applying this with different applicators, without and with various primers, and it just looked like nothing special to me, in fact, it looked like literally nothing. I am currently NC15, and this really did not show up on me at all, even heavily applied. I did not detect even really any of the shimmer, which I guess for my aging eyelids might be a good thing (46 years old). But to me, this looked no better than a drugstore eyeshadow…I was shocked. This is what supposedly is a cult fave..? Hmm.
This has got to be the nudest of the nude eyeshadows I have ever tried. As in, not even there. Does not even ‘even out’ my eyelids, or do anything even remotely noticeable. It truly is like nothing is there, and not in a ‘good’ way. Just..nothing. Nada.
I guess it was no surprise that I almost typed this as Pale Barely, that might be a better name for this. I thought this would be a nice all-over one shadow eyeshadow (pretty sure I have read and seen youtubers rave about this as a one-shadow, too). But for me, this is a huge disappointment. I am glad it works for some. To each their own. But for me, this seems like a sad joke. Maybe because the one I got was in a holiday kit, maybe the pigmentation is not the same, but to me, this is a dud product. The compact is very nice and luxe, so there is that. But who really sees our eyeshadow cases..? *shrug*
I guess I just maybe expected/thought some sort of ‘magic’ would happen when using this eyeshadow, and for me, it definitely did not. A single shadow of this price point (and yes I realize mine came in a holiday kit, but still, it is the same actual product, no?), I don’t know, I guess I thought the angels would sing and come down and apply this for me or something…lol But really, to me, I get the same look and feel and wear time using Covergirl Mink or Maybelline Silken Taupe shadow, which is exactly how this looks and performs on my eyes.

This color is a light neutral shimmery shade that looks darker on my lids than it does in the pan. It’s a mixture of warm and cool that’s quite pretty. If I had to assign it a color, I would say that it’s in the brown family and has a very pretty shimmer that’s not glittery but rather subtle. The texture is to die for and is almost creamy. I had planned to wear this as an all over lid shade but it proved too dark for my light complexion and makes me look tired when I wear it this way. But rather than return it, I’ve decided to use it on the outer third with a light beige shadow on the lid. It would also work as a crease shade but my eyes are so deep set that I don’t need extra contouring there and don’t want the area to recede further. My eyes are also quite round and using a darker shade on the outer third gives them a more almond shape. Pale Barley is also great as a liner when used wet. It glides right on and stays put, although I do use a primer so that may have something to do with it (MAC Paint Pot in Painterly). This shadow has an equal measure of warm and cool tones so it comes off as more neutral. I’m disappointed it is so dark on me and not like it is in the pan. When I first got it I was really excited because it appeared to be exactly what I’d been searching for nearly a year to find. However, my search for a bronzy shade that’s just slightly deeper than my NW 20 skin tone goes on. I want some shimmer but nothing coppery or the slightest bit orange. I though Pale Barley was going to be the answer to my prayers. And $29 for a single shadow is outrageous but I pulled the trigger anyway. I’m still debating whether to return it to Nordstrom. If it isn’t flattering and something I would use often, then it’s going back. Nevertheless, my search continues for something bronze with shimmer that’s not too dark or too orange/brown. I’ve been searching such a long time and have spent countless dollars and nothing has been quite right, including Pale Barley. Maybe I should stop looking and maybe something will simply fall into my lap, lol! Pale Barley is a gorgeous shade and the pigmentation and texture are lovely, it’s just not suited to my complexion the way I want to use it. I think it’s time to send it back. Damn!!
