I was surprised at how runny and lotion-like this product is now. I remember it being more creamy and spreadable. It was sloppy and messy to use and left an odd plastic-like film on my face. Not really hydrating but it wasn’t drying either. On the upside, this did not irritate or sting my face or eyes in any way and no breakouts. After 6 weeks of use, with Elizabeth Arden Prevage serum underneath. My skin does look better and more even-toned.

Olay’s Total Effects is their 2nd lowest priced Sub brand after the Classics Sub brand. Olay is famous for their pink beauty fluid launched since 1952 in South Africa.
It has since then been sold all over the world from many differently names from Oily of Olay to Oil of Ulan and Oil of Olaz.
In the early 2000’s Olay started with their total effects line which included in an efficacious amount of Niacinamide. Niacinamide is Vitamin B3 a wonderful multi tasking ingredients scientifically proven to reduce dark spots, most forms of pigmentation, decrease inflammation and increase skin’s immunity and barrier function. Also stimulates the synthesis of ceramides and essential lipids in the skin.
A very easy ingredient to formulate with Niacinamide is stable in light and air and doesn’t seem to reduce it’s efficacy when exposed to the elements like most potions and lotions in jars or pots.
Olay has nothing going for it other than Niacinamide, by that I mean it is the only thing they seem to formulate with. Other than their classics collection which seems to be the most decently priced products from them these days, Olay uses Niacinamide in every sub brand they own, in order of increased priced and sub brand they are Classics, Total Effects, Fresh Effects, Regenerest, Regenerist Luminous and Pro X.
The luminous collection is the only sub brand that uses different ingredients along with Niacinamide, it is Acetyl Glucosamine. A lightening ingredient that used in tandem with Vitamin B3 is shown to reduce discolourations and pigmentation quite well.It will take quite a few months for real noticeable results however, certainly not as fast if you had used Hydroquinone and Tretinoin. These latter drugs are much more effective and you will get better value and RESULTS out of your money.
Olay Total Effects Day cream gentle SPF 15 has a light lotion texture that will readily absorb from very dry to normal skins. I can see it being a problem for combination to very oily skins. The formula is fragrance free which is a big plus, as for active ingredients all it contains is Niacinamide, Panthenol and Vitamin E. The rest is all fillers, texture enhancers and preservatives.
SPF 15 is way too low for a day time moisturiser, unless your living in a part of the world with reduced sunlight, everyone should be using a day cream with SPF30 and above, that is the globally accepted standard.
I would like to see Olay venture into other territories other than Niacinamide, (notice their Olay Regenerist Packaging is similar to that of SK-II, P&G own both Olay and SK-II).
They should take example from Neutrogena and RoC and try start using retinol and retinoids, or at least Vitamin C, it takes more than one ingredient to tackle the many problems of skin. Also Olay is becoming more and more redundant for me these days, now that I can buy 10% Niacinamide from The Ordinary or Paula’s Choice for a fraction of the price.
If you must buy from Olay, stick to their cleansers, classics and Luminous range and only buy when half price.
I would not repurchase this product.

ETA – woke up to a massive cyst forming on my chin. I have been using this lotion as the only new product in my routine for not even a full week, but I have also been doing Deciem’s 2% retinoid for 2 weeks as well. However, I have used Deciem’s product before (have had it for a year) and I’ve never gotten cysts from it. I believe my reaction was from the lotion. It is very rich and thick – and I think if you do not have super sensitive skin and oily skin like me, you may be able to use this. But I will stick to my Olay sensitive skin moisturizing lotion (simple bottle) instead. Bummer.

This is for the one withOUT SPF. Olay makes two versions of this fragrance free version, spf and non-spf. This is the non-spf. They also make one that is fragranced and with spf. If you are looking for a sensitive skin, nutrient dense, and creamy face lotion without spf, this stuff is great.
I have only been using this for a few days, it has no scent, very neutral (no itching/burning reactions), creamy, absorbs ok (is tacky after applied) and a little goes a long way. A little half pump is all you need to do your face and neck. It is pricey for a drugstore lotion, and you only get 1.7 ounces– not much, but if you have dry skin, or are oily with older skin, you may like this.
If you do have oily skin like me, I do not recommend using this as your daytime moisturizer. I found its too rich for my skin during the day and it made me oily with my HG oily skin foundation. So I will stick with Olay’s sensitive skin beauty fluid lotion (great day lotion) during the day. But for a night moisturizer, this is nice!
I have not used this long enough to see if i can reap any of the extra benefits its supposed to claim (wrinkles etc…) and if I dont see any difference in my skin (it does make it very smooth and soft but my Olay sensitive skin fluid did too) I would not repurchase because of the price. But if I do see some anti-aging benefits, I would consider keeping this in my skincare routine.

This stuff does not give me acne or make me oily, which is a god send. It makes my face flawless with no blackheads, and helps me look healthy. Overall, amazing and the fragrance free is perfect for sensitive skin. If you’re oily or acne prone, try this instead of the typical salycilic acid moisturizers you currently use. Sometimes, a basic fragrance free moisturizer does much better on healing than harsh acids.

I decided to switch to this moisturizer from the Olay Total Effects Mature Skin moisturizer because it’s fragrance free. So far, I’m loving it. It takes less than one full pump to cover my face and neck. It goes on smoothly and absorbs fairly quickly. My skin looks and feels great. I wish Olay would make more fragrance free products. I will definitely buy this again.

pro:
-DID NOT BREAK ME OUT HALLELUJAH!
No clogged pores, no big chin or cheek zits.
-did not irritate my sensitive and reactive skin.
-no bad smells or fragrances
– is a light moisturizer. Kept my face from getting tight without causing my makeup to break up from a raft of floating oil.
Cons:
-leaves whitish streaks. I tried patting, rubbing thoughrouly, using both more or less, I’d always find streaks on my skin when I wore powder foundation.
-no real discernible difference in my skin. I’ve worked hard to figure out how to calm the redness and acne, but this did nothing to even mildly correct my developing fine lines or fade post acne marks. This was a 5 month trial, so I figured I’d see at least SOME difference.
-as mentioned, this is only mildly moisturizing. I still got dry patches, particularly on my nose, so I’m thinking it just wasn’t enough moisture for me.
I guess I was just hoping for a bit…more. It’s pretty amazing that this didn’t break me out or cause redness, it is one of a handful of products that can boast that. My rating is based pretty much solely on that. I feel like it failed on all of the 7 effects promised. I won’t be repurchasing, but I am going to try the regenerist sensitive skin formula next, hoping I find a product that does more for moisture and anti aging.

I really like this product! I’ve been using it for a few months, and I have noticed my skin looks more even and just nice over all. I have very, very dry skin and have tried almost every moisturizer out there – some were very expensive, some didn’t moisturize well at all, some broke me out or clogged my pores even though I’m not acne prone. This basic, unscented moisturizer works well and the price is right, especially since you can often find Olay or Ulta coupons. On those really cold, dry winter days, I do layer a *little* Bobbi Brown face oil over this and my skin is happy. I can’t believe that out of every moisturizer I’ve tried, that I like this simple drugstore one the best!

Great product – my skin definitely felt firmer and hydrated after only one use. I will definitely repurchase.

I didn’t like it at all despite my high expectations. I have dry reactive sensitive thin skin that gets aggrevated in extreme conditions. I used it on my better days and still it made my skin feel so dry and oily at the same time. It layed a membrane of sleek oily film on the surface of my skin so I could not even imagine using any makeup on top of it effectively. I washed it away after some time as I could not stand the feeling of oily dryness if you know what I mean. This is exactly the effect a looser moisturizer will give you if you have a dry skin and try to quench it. It just makes it worse. Good news is that it is scent-free and did not cause any rush or reaction on me but I no longer use it as it went straigh to the bin.

Update: I’ve been sticking to this for a while and it still doesn’t give me any breakouts. The wrinkles below my eyes which I’ve been worried about before have been gone already cause of this too. Really love this stuff.
I think I love this product. I’ve switched from age defying sensitive skin night cream to total effects fragrance free and within three days I’m already seeing an improvement.for those who had acne and were left with acne scars or dark marks pls don’t miss this stuff cause this really works thought at first I didn’t think it would since my skin is so so sensitive I have always broken out with all the moisturizers and creams I’ve tried except from this. It may be expensive but I think it is definitely worth the price. You will get to wake up to a brighter face with less redness and firmer skin. I never thought I’d be able to find a moisturizer that suits me which has always been my problem which caused me more problem since I’ve been using aha cleansers but isn’t always able to moisturizer that has always left my skin dry , dull and prone to breakouts. But thank GOD I found this. I just needed this so much having gone thru acne and left with red marks and scars which now I’m greatful about since I’m now clear because of the proactive repairing treatment lotion which has been the only product I use from their line along with a change of cleanser from harsh ones to dove cucumber n green tea body wash and most especially this olay stuff that I know is one of the greatest factor my skin has started to show some dramatic changes I’ve never experienced before with other stuffs. So please try it, if you’re a little doubtful that it may cause bad reactions like breakout, try it first on at least 1/4 part of your face like the lower half part of your cheek or forehead or chin for at least three days.thank God and olay for this. Great treat stuff.:)
