As the owner of an oil slick face, I LOVE this stuff! I can’t tell you how many times I would have to wash my face every single day just for a moment of relief from my oily skin, and this lotion has been wonderful! It doesn’t keep me dry all day long, but it’s nothing that an additional midday application can’t fix.
The packaging is very simple, but also very pretty. The product itself, well, it feels like lotion, I guess? It’s not too thick or too thin, it’s opaque, and it does have kind of a funky smell to it from the clay, I figure. It’s not a horrible scent, but it’s an almost artificial or medicinal sort of smell, but it doesn’t linger for long once you apply it. I like the pump because it allows you to control just how much you’re getting, and you don’t need all that much. I honestly use a drop on my forehead, my chin, and one on each cheek and that’s plenty for full coverage.
This product seems like it’s heavy at first, but turns out to be pretty thin (and invisible) once you start applying it. It spreads pretty nicely, absorbs quickly, isn’t greasy at all, and doesn’t leave a residue. The result? A few hours of my face feeling like skin and not like Crisco! I apply this very last in my morning routine, after my makeup, moisturizer, and sunscreen. I haven’t noticed any negative side effects of the product itself or mixing it with anything else. It keeps my skin mattified, and even when it wears off, I don’t seem to look quite as shiny as when I don’t use it.
One of these tubes will last a while, so if you’re like me and don’t much care for blowing tons of cash on tiny bottles of product, don’t be discouraged. I approached e.l.f.’s skincare line with a bit of reluctance because it’s not terribly often a cosmetic brand can successfully make the transition into skincare (or vice versa), but I will say I’m very happy with this particular lotion. I haven’t tried anything else in the Elf+ line yet, but this lotion is definitely going to make a regular appearance in my skincare routine.
As an added bonus, this is one of e.l.f’s products that seems to be available in drugstores, so no need to buy online and wait for it to arrive. Whether or not you’re a devoted e.l.f. customer, this is a wonderful product to have as part of your routine if you’ve got problems with your face looking like a greased bowling ball.

ETA: three lippies – I think this is a good product, if you like thick moisturizers (whipped consistency), however, I don’t. I prefer really runny ones. Even though it is thick, it does absorb immediately, so don’t let the thick consistency stop you from trying this. I also used it for almost a week straight and I think towards the end, the sensitive areas around my eyes were starting to look a bit sunburned (feel tender) and I think it may have been from the strong tea tree oil scent (or more tea tree in this version). I still would recommend folks try it – but I prefer a more runny moisturizer for my shiny skin. This did not break me out, so there is bonus there, and it definitely blurs and mattifies because of the kaolin and silica in it (more than the oil control liquid lotion, I think). Try it, you may like it. I wouldn’t recommend for every day use, just because of the stronger tea tree in it.

Just from testing this for two days, during the day (no makeup), this stuff is pretty awesome. I purchased two other elf+ matte products, the setting powder and spray – those were so-so. This stuff, however, actually works! I have combo skin that gets shiny from BP but is also dry, so I always wear a light hydrating lotion. But it can make me shiny/greasy — which is why I really wanted to try this!
You get 2.2 oz for $8 which isnt bad, with a soft squeeze tube with a pump that works! The pump lets you choose how much you want to pump out via a spring, which I like.
Texture- mousse-like, thick, but spreads nicely. You can feel the kaoilin/silica in it, it feels a bit grainy, but not harsh. I dot small amounts on my face in sections like a primer, then gently rub in. It dissapears. Has a light pink color. Absorbs immediately, does not feel greasy at all — i think it actually feels like a powdery finish once it absorbs. Not tacky even with wearing it for a few hours.
Scent- strong tea tree oil, almost medicinal. I dont mind it, it goes away immediately. Doesnt seem to bother my skin at all.
I am trying this as my day lotion when not wearing makeup. It may work under makeup, I may test that soon, but it does have kaolin and silica, which you can feel a bit in the lotion, making it mousse-like and with an almost grainy texture when rubbing in, which is why I’m not so sure how well this will do under makeup. I know mixing into makeup is a no go. This does keep me more matte than my regular lotion (cetaphil w/ HA) and I find that it does moisturize enough to take care of flaky dry spots. That impressed me. The silica in it also does blur pores a bit, which is awesome, since my regular lotion can make me shiny and thus, make my pores stand out. The texture makes you think it might not be hydrating enough, and it may not be for super dry skin folks, which is why I’m using this for daytime. At night, i switch back to my regular lotion which can make me shiny but is super hydrating for while I sleep.
So far, I am impressed! This keeps me at least 40% more matte than my other lotion. If you have sensitive skin, and your other lotions make you shiny, try this. I also recommend this to folks who use acne topicals that make them red or shiny (my benzoyl peroxide gel does). This works big time!!! I think the tea tree oil also calms my redness from BP. When I would wear my other lotion and no makeup, my face would get shiny so fast, making my skin look redder and my pores would just stand out. This is like a full 180 difference from it!
I have sensitive skin, I use topical BP and this does not agitate (so far). Based off my current use, I would repurchase. Giving 4 stars because it is quite thick and strong smelling.
