As a long term user of The Ordinary products I waited a long time before deciding to purchase this product, given the hefty price tag. But I feel it is worth the money as I have seen results I haven’t seen with other retinol products including ones from Paula’s Choice, The Ordinary and Peter Thomas Roth. Based on reviews and advice that came with the product, I started out very slowly applying only once a week and buffering with the sample Drunk Elephant B Hydra serum, and working up to twice a week after a month or so. I didn’t experience any peeling or excessive redness, only occasional dryness and a slight redness the next day. After months I still only use 2-3 times a week at most but I’ve noticed my pores have shrunk and the texture of my skin has improved. Prior to using this, I had for several years a sore on the end of my nose which was likely sun damage and which could have been pre-cancerous. But after a few months of using this cream the sore disappeared. I can only attribute it to the cell turnover caused by the retinol. So I’m impressed. Other than the hefty price tag, the only con is the packaging which is a pain when the tube is new as it is very easy to dispense too much. I didn’t peel off the foil seal inside the cap but instead left a pin-sized hole but the stuff still managed to leak out around the foil if I pressed too hard.

I’m in my 60’s and already have good skin, thanks to carefully taking care of it for years. I was using a 3% retinol serum from Peter thomas roth every night with moisturizer on top. As I could no longer find it in stores, I decided to try this product from Sephora. The saleslady DID warn me; I should have listened. After about 3 uses around 2 days apart, I got all those bad reactions- redness, flaking and peeling and dryness and tightness. I really didn’t want to deal with all that- i already have nice skin and just wanted to keep it that way! I returned it and ordered the Peter Thomas Roth product online instead.

I have been using Retinol products for years. Prescription strength is just too much. No matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t get past the flaking peeling stage, so I’ve shifted to OTC the highest strength products I can find. I love the following Retinol products I’ve tried: Green Cream, Sunday Riley, Shanee Darden. I think this might have them all beat. I am able to use this every other night and have noticed a refined texture and less oil on my insanely oily skin. I love rotating in Vintner’s Daughter or other Oil with it. I’ve heard that the oil help drive the retinol deeper into the skin I have no idea if that is true, but it does help buffer the flaking and peeling I normally experience with retinol. For an OTC, I think this is really effective and will repurchase.

Love DE products, this was just too intense for my sensitive skin (combo, fine lines and age spots showing up). Have had great success with other products and use the Beste Cleanser, Cfirma and Protini daily (swap out Protini for Bhdyra when my skin is leaning more oily than dry). I added this to my routine and used less than a pea sized amount once a week while continuing to use sunscreen religiously. Kept it up for a few weeks but my skin was too raw and scaly to continue. I get that retinol does this and I definitely have sensitive skin so others may have great success with this product. The consistency of the product spreads easily which is a positive but I’m keeping it at 3 stars because even if it was a holy grail product for me the packaging is awful as other reviewers have mentioned. I knew this from reviews and was very careful but each time more product oozed out than needed as soon as the cap was off. This product is way too expensive to lose that much product each time. May be a great product for some once they figure out better packaging

I’m 55 with combination skin. I’ve been using granactive retinoid and similar retinol products for about 2 years now, but nothing compares to A Passioni. It’s absolutely the best otc retinol available. I did experience some flaking after about 2 weeks, but it went away with Sisley Creme Reparatrice within just over 24 hours. I use it every other day, alternating with either Vitamin C or Lactic Acid, always at night, and my skin looks … well, it doesn’t look like any other 55 year old I know of. It’s helped my pores, smoothed out my fine lines and is working on my one vertical frown line. I just wish it came with a pump or some other packaging where my pea sized amount turns into a broad bean size, but since it’s a cream and has Vit A, I guess the metal tube is what DE decided was best.

I started to use this once a week coz i was afraid of any purging. I started to get flaking skin after about 4 days after my initial use -very minimal. I’ve been keeping this routine for 2 months now, i use once a week and then the flaking happens. You have to be patient with the process.
I started noticing a change after a month and a half, my skin texture is A LOT smoother, my pores have shrunk a little, most of my old acne scars are fading pretty fast and any monthly zits goes away fast. Im really happy with the results im getting. I think my skin is happy with a once a week schedule and I plan on upping it to 2x a week after 3 months (i dont want to freak my skin out).
TLDR : this works, i love it!! Yes, i wish it was cheaper; Yes, the package can be a little finicky and I can see why; but it really does work. Just be patient. Since i dont use this everyday im sure this tube will last me a loooong time. I literally use a pea size once a week.
PS. Do not forget to SPF everyday!

I’ve been using this for about a month now. I started off once a week and have been working my way up. This is for sure the highest concentration of Retinol I’ve ever used- and the price reflects that. Drunk Elephant is always pricey, but with Retinol, that’s to be expected in general. Especially for 1%. I’ve used a variety of retinol products in the past and they generally dry me out so much I discontinue use before I hit the clinical duration to see benefits of using it.
This one, despite being the highest concentration I’ve ever used- has been unproblematic. It absorbs quickly unlike the products from the Ordinary and doesn’t cause irritation like the Neutrogena ones I’ve tried. And you’re not left feeling tacky to the touch. The consistency is just right. The packaging is nice too- I’ve never been a fan of the eye dropper ones. I can’t speak to the efficacy, but I can say that by this stage, I’ve normally discontinued use already.
The product states that it can be used in the morning as well. I’ve yet to attempt to layer it with makeup, but I think that if you’ve got the time to give it a bit to set really well to be safe, it would layer just fine.
You’re for sure paying for the name, but the contraction is also quite high for a commercial product. I’m going to continue use, and would for sure purchase again.

Check out Dr. Dray’s recommendation for how to apply this. Moisturize the skin first and then go in with the retinol. Since I’ve been doing it this way, I’ve had no stinging or dryness or peeling. I’ve only been using this for about a month so I can’t comment on its efficacy yet.

I have been user of ROC Deep Wrinkle Night cream for years but I wanted a retinol treatment that was stronger. I received a deluxe sample of this from Sephora (it might have been a 500 point perk and came with another DE moisturizer). This is housed in a metal tube. Per the instructions you are to use a pea-sized amount-I used more than this the first night but then realized a pea-sized amount really will cover your entire face, so there is no need to waste product. The first day my skin did look great and very plump and smooth, but I did notice in direct sunlight after putting on my makeup that there is was peeling around my chin. For those who are concerned about that, this is normal with retinol use. I have used this three more days so far and I feel that my skin really does look smoother. I just use this in conjunction with a heavier moisturizer and I have used an exfoliating scrub as well to counteract the peeling. I do feel that this is more effective than the ROC treatments I have previously used so I will be buying the full size version of this when I finish the sample. I’ve had a couple of breakouts on my cheeks prior to using this and I feel like that has dried them out/sped up healing on those as well.

Oh HELL NO ….. I truly wanted to love this product and I did initially ….. I used this for two weeks and my skin was sensitive, dry/peeling and would burn (even though I mixed with Marula oil or other DE products as recommended to cocktail,) however, I went from using this 1 – 2 times a week to 1 time a week and my skin was looking good (which is why I still gave a few points to my rating,) however, all that changed ….. week three I started getting more peeling and on week 4 I had the most horrific rash that spread down to my neck (even though I never put product on my neck) ……. I looked like I had a severe chemical burn ……. it was UGLY …. I immediately stopping using A-Passioni and it took a good 7days before my rash cleared up and my skin was back to normal. I literally cringe now every time I am in Sephora and walk by the Drunk Elephant section ….. if you can get this to work, good for you as I did have great skin for a short time, but for the rest of us, this product was a nightmare on skin and big hugs to all of you going thru the bad reaction like I did.
