Unlike many of the reviewers here. I had the same experience . It did not color my grey hair at all. Just waste of money. I am so glad I found a new natural product which has ni PPD but unfortunately it is available only in India now. It is not Henna. It is made of clay and it doesn’t cause reaction and it is white kaolin clay mixed with natural dye. Apply and leave it for two hours and you have beautiful hair. If you ladies get this then remember to use a thick hot oil massage cream before your final rinse. This will prevent from your hair getting dry.

I just tried Palette by Nature hair dye (dark natural brown – 4N) for the first time today and (so far) I LOVE IT!!!!
Like most of their clients, I had formed an allergy to PPD (although not a serious one – it was getting worse) and was not ready to go grey. I’ve been using natural henna/indigo hair dye for the past year and have been very pleased with the condition of my scalp but the processing time and mess was less than appealing. So, I started doing some research online and found Palette by Nature…
The product is quite expensive compared to other natural hair dyes and the reviews online are mixed but I decided to take the “leap” and buy a box. I am so happy I did!!!!
(I am Asian and have VERY resistant grey hair — you may find this product works easier for you than I did but I ALWAYS have to process my hair dyes for almost twice as long as recommended — even with the chemical based ones.)
Here’s my opinion…..
1. I assume the product is also a henna/indigo based dye (read the ingredients) and will work in a similar fashion.
2. If you expect the dye to work like a chemically based (i.e. PPD) product, you WILL be disappointed. It is NOT equivalent!!! But I’ve been using henna/indigo for a year now and have “reset” my bar. The trade off is that it IS a natural product with a VERY low risk of an allergic reaction.
3. Resistant grey hairs will be difficult to dye without chemicals like ammonia or PPD so you need to expect a “lighter” shade on those grey hairs. Also, “virgin” grey hairs may need more than one session…. I know from experience with henna/indigo that the grey hair needs to have a henna base before the indigo sticks so this is usually a two step (lengthy) process. I already have a henna base on most of my grey so the product worked great with just one attempt. I did leave the dye in for a whole hour under heat to really give the dye a chance to work (I know how resistant my grey hair is — might to too much for someone who isn’t familiar with henna/indigo).
4. I also assume this product will fade over time (as does the henna/indigo) but I found repetitive use results is more permanent color. I have long hair and only dye my roots but the end of my hair seem to be darker and none of the grey hair has returned.
So my pros and cons….
PROS:
1. No PPD!!!! All natural!!!! (Some “natural” hair dyes on the market still contain PPD).
2. WAY less messy than using henna/indigo. Easier to apply and easier to rinse.
3. Smells wonderful!! (I used the normal type- not fragrance free). Much better than henna/indigo which has a very earthy-dirt like smell.
4. Nice color. Not as dark as in the photo on the box (but again I have very resistant grey hair) but it is a lovely warm, honey brown.
5. A little goes a long way. I only used 1/2 a box to do my roots.
6. Left my hair very soft and manageable.
7. Shorter processing time than using henna/indigo.
CONS:
1. Price!!! OUCH!!!
2. Needs a heat source. I’ve been using a heating bonnet with my henna/indigo so this wasn’t much of a problem for me but would be an added expense if you didn’t have one. Alternatively, you can use a blow dryer but that would be such an inconvenience to have to do for 30-45 min.
3. Again it doesn’t work as well or last as long as chemically based products, but for those of us who cannot use them anymore – this is a very nice option.
4. May require more than one application to work (especially for resistant grey hair).
5.. Can only purchase from company’s website. Would be a very nice option to be able to buy from Amazon!!!
I didn’t give 5 stars mainly due to the price. Otherwise, I would have definitely given it a better rating.

I have mixed reviews. I have put before and after pics in my photos. Anyway, the good part is that it did a pretty good job of coloring the gray in my light brown hair, especially the roots that were pure gray and about 4 inches long. It took me back very close to my color I had before starting to gray. I used the light golden blond and it had hints of green after it was done, but not so noticeable after styling. So I am satisfied with looking like my old self again after months of salt and pepper hair.
The bad part was that it was messy and took a lot of time. The cleanser did not take the stains off of my skin or prevent them in the first place. And having to use a blow dryer for 30 minutes, circling my head, was daunting. So for those reasons, I would say I probably wouldn’t use it again unless I couldn’t find another natural color that was easier. If no other allergy free colors work, then I would bite the bullet and go through that process again. Overall, I am happy with the color. The few scattered grays just look like highlights because they have been softened and blended.

I have been allergic to hair dye since I turned 40…Now i’m 43 and still frustrated about what products to use for my gray hair. I went to an allergist and I’m allergic to the chemical in hair dyes…which i should use ONLY PPD chemicals..which you are all in the same boat as me!! Well, after purchasing 3 different products from Palette by Nature, I can say it doesn’t work and I did NOT cover my grays at all…I’m a light brown hair but if you say you cover gray hairs and we don’t get allergic to it, then you better work! Very disappointed and will not purchase this product ever again!

DISASTROUS EFFECT! LEAVES HAIR BONE DRY. DOESN’T COVER GRAY HAIR (NOT EVEN REMOTELY), SMELLS LIKE PURE RUBBING ALCOHOL. LEAVES HAIR LIKE TAR BUILDUP. WORST PRODUCT EVER!
For 6 years I have been using Light Mountain Natural Henna Dark Brown/Black. Hair always so shiny and healthy.
I used this tonight, and it dried out my hair significantly. This is the worst product I have ever come across, EVER! I used to use commercial dyes until 2011 when I switched to all nature hair products. Due to the time it takes for the pure henna to develop the hair color, I tried this brand. I researched for multiple days and hours on end.
My hair came out BRITTLE, DRY, so DRY that I had to go back into the shower, to apply more conditioner, and I have never had to use conditioner on my head, just the ends of my long hair, and I had to use a serious amount of conditioner.
The shower is black. My hands are black. The gray hair on my hair stayed gray. The smell of the base is also PURE rubbing alcohol. If you choose to have “no fragrance” at check out, that is what you get. VERY overwhelming smell. Frankly, I was scared to use it, but talked myself into it, thinking that if there was a fragrance I’d still be putting the same product on my hair.
I followed the instructions letter by letter.
I would not use this brand if it was the last product on earth.
I can only hope that Light Mountain Hair Color will be forgiving and be able to fix this disastrous product.

I am highly allergic to hair dye: blisters-large and they hurt and ooze, swelling of lymph nodes, face and eye swollen, etc. i have been very fortunate to have had no gray and I am 67. then one day i began to get gray esp. around the scalp line. if i pulled by hair back, there they were. I am a dark brunette. I have tried foils but even those once in a while would seep into my scalp and i was miserable. I would have to take a bunch of benadryl before having even foils. And since I still work I had to make sure it was on days that I was free as benadryl makes me sleepy. I patched tested several ‘non-allergenic” brands but each caused a pretty healthy reaction even with dosing of benadryl. i tried brands without ppd and nope, I had reactions. I tried glosses and glazes and still had moderate reactions. I wasn’t ready to give up and then i tried palette. first ,it is messy and time consuming, but again i am not used to coloring my hair. I didn’t follow the heating part-did that once with foil and it just seeped into my scalp and i was left with all the above symptoms.. I have had NO adverse reaction. did it cover all the gray the first time-no but it did a lot of it. I have shoulder length hair and did not use the whole box-i was nervous using it and that may be another reason for it not getting all the silver. i am just amazed and pleased that there is a product i can use and yes, it is not cheap. There was no color change but i wanted just to hide the grey so this was perfect for me. my hair looks natural.

Palette by Nature epic fail:
Having had a really bad reaction to hair dye and tints after 20 + years, I had various tests to confirm severe allergy to PPD and all associated chemicals, so i was really excited to find this product.
2 1/2 hours later, not a single grey has been covered, i followed the instructions to the letter, i timed every thing, I even re-checked i hadn’t messed up the bottles, so sad a frustrated.
All i can say is do not waste your money,other than my hair has a nice sheen (which I could have got that from an olive oil wrap) in about 20 minutes . . . .
I have sent an email to the company asking them to respond and i will let you know.
In the meantime if anyone can recommend a product that contains no chemicals or henna (too much bad hype) please post it.

Does not work! I just wasted the whole morning coloring my hair using this product and over $100 because I purchased 4 bottles after reading and believing the few good reviews and discarded the bad reviews on this product. Not one single gray hair was dyed. I’m going back to using Natural Instinct which works perfectly beautifully for me in the last 10 years. I changed to Palette by Nature because I read about PPD. Until I find a PPD free product that’s proven to work with money back guarantee, I’m going back to use what worked for a fraction of the cost and 1/4 of the time to use. Utterly unhappy with this product!

First…..after reading over the reviews for this product….I am very sorry for everyone who did not have a good experience. I happen to like the product because it is PPD free, and because I have had cancer, it is important for me to use something that eliminates chemicals that could be potentially harmful to my body.
I have been using the product for several years. I have naturally black hair. Because of this, my expectations of full coverage are more realistic I think. It really doesn’t bother me that it doesn’t cover every single grey hair…I am almost 60 for crying out loud…lol!
The application process is a bit long and tedious. I bought a hairdryer with a bonnet and leave it on high for about 40 minutes or so after the application process. Like I said, it doesn’t fully cover the grey but it covers enough of it that I can live with it. The alternative to using no product at all is not very appealing to me.
I have not had a problem with an itchy scalp or other problems reported by some, although one can develop an allergy to something after continuous use. I will continue to use it for as long as I can or just get plain tired of the fuss.
Oh yes….as a side note, I have used Ecocolors in the past, quite a bit actually. I quit that because of the use of ppd in the product. I’m not sure if Ecocolors stll has ppd in it or not. I have also used henna. The Ecocolors was by far the easiest of the three products, but again switched because of the ppd issues.
The cost of this product is high. I especially don’t like the fact that they tell you you are receiving a $1.00 off the product which in fact forces you to buy another box to qualify for the free shipping. I consider that underhanded on their part.

I am very allergic to several hair color products. The reaction had become more serve over the past few years even though I had colored my hair for 15 years. I tried Nuturcolor from Whole Foods which gave me beautiful results but after 4 times even that caused a reaction for me. I called number on box and spoke to rep and found out that it contains very small amount of PPD. The reaction affects my nervous system which is very terrifying. I quickly rinsed off product after only 5 minutes on my head and called my doctor. He told me to take 1 & 1/2 dose of Benadryl and drink 2 water bottles. If I didn’t feel better in 5 minutes he wanted me to call 911. I paced my house wondering what to do. In 20-30 minutes later I was completely fine. Scary stuff I felt like I was being poisoned I went to an allergist and strangely I am not allergic to PPD but allergic something else in hair color products. Determined to find a product I had the Allergist do additional testing on me for what is known to be a safer product called EcoColor ( free of PPD, resorcinol, ethanolamine and propylene), but even that gave me a reaction. I possibly narrowed it down to be allergic to aminophenol. My allergist can do testing for 2 versions of aminophenol but he would have to special order this type of testing. It is crazy researching what is in so many hair color products and how harmful they can be. I safely tried Madison Reed semi-permanent gloss after patch test but it washed out after a few washings I am so glad that I tried Palette by Nature. I did a patch test for 48 hours first without any adverse reactions. I have fine textured, medium blonde hair with large gray skunk like areas at both temples and gray around my face Odd looking if I go were to go natural. Thank you, Thank you Palette by Nature for creating a permanent hair color product that works for me. I only needed 1/3 of each of the bottles to cover my gray. I poured product along a comb and got as close to root area as I could to be on the safe side. Now I look like a younger me thanks to 9N which gave me a light blonde deposit on my gray hair. I could go darker but I am enjoying the blonder hair look around my face just fine. I’ll be ordering more color soon to have on hand and will even buy color protecting products. Moral of the story. Always do a patch test, listen your body, seek medical advise if necessary but perhaps there is a product out there that will work for you. I hate to give 5 out of 5 after only 1 use.
