This has such a fresh scent it’s hard to believe it’s a vitamin A serum. Unlike many other retinol/retinoid products this serum contains HPR (hydroxypinacolone retinoate) which is a new form of vitamin A and doesn’t need the conversion steps that retinol does. It’s also more stable in nature and in my experience, this formula does work to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and fades pigmentation marks. The serum is kind of milky and contains aloe vera, ceramides, HA, and other ingredients, all which feel very comfortable on the skin. It also works very well for me as I don’t experience any of the annoying peeling or flaking that happens when I try to use other retinol products. For people looking for a fast fix, you won’t find it with this. I personally feel it is unrealistic to expect to reverse existing sun damage, hyperpigmentation, etc. any quicker than it took to create it. This would be a good preventative measure and if you are patient or you have sensitive/reactive skin, I would also recommend this product.

I really wanted to love the Mad Hippie Vitamin A Serum, unfortunately there are a couple of reasons I didn’t. The form of retinol used in this is HPR, which is a much more gentle form of retinol, so if you have had a bad experience with retinol in the past you are less likely to have flaking, peeling,redness,or itchiness from this form. This form of retinol seems to have a little less information on it and I find it to work much slower, so if you are after fast results I would recommend going with another form of retinol. My main issue is the inclusion of Phenethyl Alcohol, which my skin just hates. Most products that contain this make my skin end up feeling dry or making me breakout. I think my skin could adjust to this had Mad Hippie left this aromatic alcohol out. Some people probably won’t have any issues with this, but if you do this might be the culprit. Why is the unstable vitamin A in a dropper style bottle instead of an airtight pump dispenser.? This serum did nothing for my combination skin but clog pores and cause breakouts.

UPDATE: i just need to stay away from Mad Hippie stuff. This ultimately ended up clogging my pores and I ended up getting two massive eruptions from these clogs. i have a few more clogs that I am hoping a glycolic acid toner will help before these other clogs turn into volcanic eruptions. bummer. so just like their vitamin c serum, this seems to help my skin and destroy it at the same time. what the hell?

What the heckity heck?? Why didn’t I try this sooner. Oh yeah, that’s right because of the coconut oil in it. And I had a bad experience with their Vit. C serum in the past too. My skin is reactive, clogs easily bc my pores are f*ckin huge, normal but easily dehydrated. I’ve been dealing with closed comedones, clogged pores and acne scars for the past month or more. Acids do me wrong so I wasn’t going down the AHA/BHA route and ACV wasn’t doing shit for my skin except maybe helping just the smallest bumps, but the lingering clogs/bumps that have been there for months (literally!) were not budging. BTW, not sure what caused these bumps exactly, but I have my suspicions on the two products that did it and have since kicked them to the curb (no new clogs since).
I decided to try this because I was so f*cking fed up with my skin. It’s only been 5 nights but (knock on wood), I think I have found the answer for my congested, scarred up face, lol. I jumped into using it every night because that’s how I roll. 3 drops on my face and 1 on my neck. It’s easy to smooth on if my face is just slightly, ever so slightly still damp from my toner….like damp is too strong a word even. But my face isn’t totally dry either.
I know this shiz it’s working. How do I know? Because I am going through a bit of a purge right now. It’s a lil ugly and I wouldn’t be this chill about the massive pimple on my face if it wasn’t getting better and each day it gets better. And I knew there was the potential of a purge happening because of the clogged pores/closed comedones that I have. But, BUT….literally like 2 of those persistent clogs finally released the other night and this last one that turned into a pimple is def on the way out. Areas where I am not going through a purge are BOMB AF and there is no irritation or dry flakes—> skin is clear, smooth and hyper-pigmentation from post acne is fading fading fading !
I don’t think I would have had any purging/pimples if I didn’t have these really clogged pores/comedones…I mean, they were pretty raised and 3D without being full blow pimples which is why I tried this. But I can deal with this yucky stage when I can see the overall situation improving 🙂 I hope the coconut oil in this doesn’t end up clogging me up. I can’t wait for this last pimple to go away so this serum can just work on getting all these damn marks to fade, lol. I will update if anything drastic changes.
I got this at Whole Foods for about $32. Considering what it is doing for my skin I think it’s reasonable.

I like this serum a lot. It’s a softer approach to retinoids. I have been using tretinoin on and off for years, and my skin is very oily, so I had no problems with adjusting to it. Went straight into using this every night. I have had no breakouts, my skin looks very bright, no dullness what so ever, my discoloration and sun spots are fading, I have no fine lines, due to the use of retinoids and my oily skin. I would highly recommend this. I follow up with the mad hippie vitamin C serum in the mornings; and spray the body shop vitamin C energising face mist throughout the day. This has worked great for me.

This stuff is SO GOOD. I’ve struggled with acne for the past 5 years, the deep cystic painful kind as well as just clogged pores in general and this has done so much for my skin just within the past couple of weeks that I started using it. It doesn’t irritate my skin at all. I was worried because it has coconut oil which has a high comedogenic rating but it hasn’t caused me to to break out at all. I had no purging period. Just better skin from the first time I started using it. Absorbs great. I started out every other night for a week and now I use it every night. 1 drop for each cheek (where most of my trouble is) and 1 for the rest of my face = 3 drops total. worth every penny. get it. go get it now.

I started using this product about two weeks ago. I jumped right into using it nightly.
It’s very gentle and hasn’t caused any redness or peeling despite the daily use and my having sensitive skin.
It smells almost exactly like Flonase (allergy nasal spray) which is yeasty, earthy, slightly floral. Dissipates quickly once applied to the skin.
Absorbs quicky and completely. I haven’t noticed an issue when applying my Clinique gel moisturizer over it. I wait about 5-10 minutes post application to use the moisturizer, per the listed instructions.
Within just two weeks, I’ve noticed a dramatic difference in old acne scars/discoloration. Granted, I don’t have icepick scarring or anything like that. My scarring is just pink/purple and redness that lingers. I’m quite pale, so any bit of discoloration shows twofold on me. However, it has lightened to the point that it’s barely noticable. My skin also has significantly increased firmness and fullness.
I haven’t really noticed a difference in my forehead lines (I don’t really have any other lines or wrinkles). It’s a little early for that, though, so I’ll update when I finish the bottle.
It hasn’t helped at all with the occasional breakouts I get (one or two small whiteheads here and there). They’re not overly noticable, but are annoying and I was hoping this, as a Vitamin A product, would take care of that.

Overall, I’m pretty pleased with this product. I wish it did a little more for my occasional breakouts, but it has helped exponentially with the discoloration.
I’m not sure if I’ll be repurchasing this product (I wish they had a “maybe” option). I think I’ll look for something a little stronger.

I love this product! I was nervous to get into vitamin A products so I tried this before foraying into retinol products and immediately fell in love. This is the first product where I’ve seen results within days of starting use. My skin just looked… good. Brighter. To be fair, my skin was fine before. But I love the way my skin looks now. My main concerns are sun-damage and anti-aging. Soon after I started this I bought the PTR Night Fusion and started alternating the two on most nights. I’ve realized that either my skin has a pretty high tolerance, or these are pretty gentle products. I haven’t experienced any peeling or dryness. The only reason why I wouldn’t go out and purchase this product again if I lost it is because I think my skin can handle higher percentage of vitamin A, so I want to try stronger products next. I would wholeheartedly recommend this to anyone who is hesitant or cautious.
