This is the second Ordinary product that has caused an allergic reaction and I’ve used Salicylic acid before so it has to be their ingredients. Literally not worth the (very physical) pain.

I had moderate acne, dark spots from acne, and oily skin. I decided to try The Ordinary. I started using 4 products: salicylic acid solution, niacinimide + zinc, 5% lactic acid, and ascorbyl glucoside. My regimen is Just facial wash then one of those serums. Nothing else. I use the niacinimide then salicylic acid in the day (I wash my face twice at daytime) and on alternate nights, the lactic acid and ascorbyl Glucoside Solution. In two weeks, I saw improvement in my skin. I’ve been using it for two months now. My skin is so much smoother, clearer, brighter, and less oily. I love these products. They are so effective yet very affordable.

I’m sad to write this review as this product was a life saver for me in the beginning (April 2019) but in the end (September 2019) I ended up having allergic contact dermatitis to it.
I started using this when I had a freak rosacea outbreak. I had bumps and pimples all over my face, it was horrendous. My derm prescribed me creams and pills but it wasn’t doing the trick. After much research I found youtube video’s online saying how great this product is for rosacea. I purchased my first bottle in April 2019 and I have to tell you, it cleared up by breakout overnight! I’m not exaggerating. I woke up the next day and most of the pimples subsided. Every day after that got better. The scars took some time to heal but a month and half later I was back to my old self with even better looking skin. I was using this product every night, 3 drops for my whole face followed with a really good moisturizer (it dries the skin out).
All was well until the beginning of September. I was waking up with swollen eyes and having weird milla bumps on my lips. Then my cheeks would swell up. I thought it was an allergy in the air based on where I was living at the time. But as time went on, my face started developing bumps that were red, itchy and oozing. I did not think this product was the issue since it did wonders clearing up my skin. I also developed what felt like a burn mark on my face (it’s the end of October and this is still healing) I starting using a cortisone cream and taking benadryl at night. The cream helped calm everything down. But the bumps kept coming back. I finally went to my derm and she said I have allergic contact dermatitis. She prescribed me a cream that cleared up the bumps after two days and continued use for 2 weeks. She didn’t know what was causing it but suggested I start testing out all my skin care products on my forearms. I made notes of the locations and date/time of use. Sadly, after 2 days of using this on my forearm, I noticed small red bumps that started itching like crazy! I couldn’t believe that my miracle product was now something I became allergic to. I’ve been using salicylic acid for YEARS with no issues.
So now I’m testing other salicylic acid products on my forearm to see if there is something in The Ordinary that I am allergic to or if I am allergic to the acid in general. I’ve been using Dr. Paula’s SA toner but so far no issues. Not sure what happened with this product but so bumped that this ended up being terrible for my skin. I thank god I looked on this site and saw that people are having similar issues, with the breakouts and burns. I’ll be writing the company so they know what their customers are going through.

I’ve been searching for a cheaper alternative to the Origins Super Spot remover and have finally found it. The Origins salicylic acid costs a whopping $19 for 0.3 oz or 8 mL. The Ordinary is known for being affordable and costs $5.30 for 1 oz or 30 mL. It comes in a glass bottle with a dropper which is the overall look of The Ordinary products. What strikes me as odd about this salicylic acid is that is doesn’t smell like anything. The texture is slightly goopy, and one drop or two is all I seem to need. I tend to use it as a spot treatment at night and not during the daytime. I do not use this every night because salicylic acid can cause some sensitivity, so if you have sensitive skin, use sparingly or steer clear. Perhaps try a benzoyl peroxide cream instead. I really enjoy how this helps shrink pimples quickly, but I don’t think it’s an immediate shrinking. I need to use it maybe two or three times to get rid of a specific blemish, but it does get the job done. Overall, I think this is a very effective product at a great price.

This product gave me chemical burns.
For months I’d been using it without issue, then starting getting allergy-like symptoms that became progressively worse: rashes, eczema, flaky skin, swelling, burning on my face and neck. I wasn’t using this product regularly, 2 p/ week – biweekly (if that), depending on my skin, and symptoms didn’t always occur immediately after application. I sought allergy testing – results negative. I have a simple facial care routine and wear little makeup; it was only until the symptoms got so severe to feel like hot, aggressive, swelling burns that I started looking into all my cosmetic products. “Bad batch” is right! It’s almost like the % concentration of acid became much higher in the last remains of this product, as I used it. I have less than 1/8 of the bottle left and the stuff BURNS. It’s unsafe for use and, quite frankly, with two press reports of women being hospitalized from chemical burns specifically related to this product, and growing reviews of customers with similar symptoms, the lot (ie. batch) or product in it’s entirety should be RECALLED or should otherwise come with a visible label warning customers of the risks of use.

PROS: None. Absolutely none.
CONS: This is the worst product I have ever used on my face in recent times and it has nothing to do with the Salicylic Acid, as Paula’s Choice LOTION 2% BHA (before their reformulation in mid 2017) was the best product to ever touch my skin, bar none. This one though… it caused my eye to massively swell up (as in go to the doctor today, no waiting) in only few hours after application, while I was sleeping. Some other parts of my skin looked like they didn’t respond so well either. I have never, in my 28 years of life, had an allergic reaction with anything! In fact, I’ve always said that I don’t know what it must be like to have an allergic reaction because I’m lucky I’m not like that. Enter this product. If you go to DECIEM’s site and read reviews, reviewers are theorizing that a bad batch was produce because a lot of people were having the same except issues with their eyes.
Fuck no. And the product also almost strangely “lathers” up in a way. Just terrible.

This product made my skin worse than it has ever been! It completely dried out my usually combination skin and caused way more spots than I usually have and they turned up in places that I don’t usually get them, like all over my cheek. I carried on using it for eight whole weeks in the hope that my skin was just purging because of the exfoliating effects of the salicylic acid, but I finally decided enough was enough and stopped using it. One week later, having switched back to using La Roche Posay Effaclar Duo (which also has salicylic acid in it) and my skin looks better than it has in weeks and back to normal. I can finally stop using multiple hydrating serums and moisturisers just in an attempt to stop my skin feeling dry and I have way less spots.
The only positive I can think of about this product is that it did make blackheads easier to extract… but then again I had more of them than before so I’m not sure that can really be a plus!
I haven’t had such an adverse reaction to a product in years, would really not recommend.

I used this product after carrying out a patch test as recommended, with no reaction in the following 48 hours. I then used a small amount on my face and neck, and woke the next morning with hideous chemical burns. The pain and itching were intense, and my skin was covered in large patches of bright red skin. This happened during winter, when I spent most of my time indoors at work, so I was not exposed to sunlight. The burns took weeks to heal, and scarring took months. This produce is SO DANGEROUS, and there is very little warning on the packaging.

i’ve been using this product consistently for about 2 months now, and my thoughts have changed somewhat since my last review. i no longer find it to be oil-controlling really at all, but i will say – my skin looks great. i am not sure whether this is responsible for the current quality of my skin, or if it’s due moreso to my consistent use of Pixi’s Glow Tonic, but either way, i don’t want to stop using either product to find out lol.
my skin in the morning looks bright and even more often than not these days, and i seldom get any whiteheads/closed comedones at all. i still discover new blackheads fairly regularly, but i’ve gotten maybe 2 whiteheads in the past month. i’ve been on two courses of accutane in my life, the first one being in 2017 and my most recent one ending in december of 2018, so i do have pretty acne-prone skin that is truly just determined to break out. i decided to try acids earlier this year as i noticed my oil production picking back up and i figured it couldn’t hurt.
i use this every single day without exception, and over the past 2-3 weeks my routine has been to apply this straight out of the shower, wait 25 min, then apply the PGT, wait 25 min, and then maybe apply a moisturizer after that. i don’t always moisturize as i have genetically oily skin, but i do notice that if i go too long without moisturizing, one (or both) of these acids give me slight chemical burns. they are usually very small patches of raw skin that disappear after a few days of consistent hydration, so they don’t really bother me at all, but it is worth noting.
i drop 6 dots of this onto my hand and very gently massage it into my skin to minimize the lather. i’m able to cover virtually every part of my face this way. and for reference, the only other products in my daily skincare routine are extra virgin olive oil (to remove makeup), a gentle foaming cleanser, and a bit of moisturizer thinned out with water. occasionally i also use micellar water and witch hazel, but they’re products i use moreso on an as-needed basis.
truth be told i suspect the glow tonic is doing more than this is, but i guess i’ll have to wait until this runs out to know for sure.
update: this product took me about 5 months to go through, using it more sparingly the first month that i had it. for the latter 4 months i used it daily pretty consistently, 6 drops each time.
2nd update: i do think this acid helped prevent breakouts for me! i was without it for a couple of weeks after finishing my bottle, and i feel like i broke out quite a bit more than usual. i still use it every evening, 20 minutes before applying the pixi glow tonic. will continue to update if the breakouts return.
3rd update: my second bottle of this only lasted me about 3 months, which i still think is worth it. i use the product almost daily, 6-7 drops each time, and it does a good job of keeping whiteheads at bay. this acid still does nothing for my oil production but at least it keeps me clear. it also seems that my skin has adjusted to my regular acid usage as i have not suffered a chemical burn since i first started using them in my routine, so that is something to keep in mind.
as of today (11.22.19), my current routine is as follows:
* oil cleanser to remove makeup
* foaming cleanser to remove oil
* TO 30% AHA + 2% BHA **OR** salicylic acid left on for 15 minutes followed by pixi’s glow tonic for 15 minutes
* a lightweight moisturizer as needed
