Olay Luminous Tone Perfecting treatment is an essence that is part of the Olay Luminous collection which also contains a three cleansers, a cleansing micellar water, cream cleanser and foaming cleanser, essence, booster serum, cream and day cream, mask, eye cream and facial oil.
Like many other products from this and other sub brands from Olay the formulas tend to be repeated. It contains Niacinamide the main ingredient Olay likes to use along with Hexydecanol and Undecylenoyl Phenylalanine , Ascorbyl Glucoside, Panthenol, Vitamin E. All ingredients shown to produce some effect in lightening discolourations. It seems to be a generous formula though judging by the order on the ingredient listing all these wonderful ingredients seems to be more of a dusting than a generous efficacious amount as is so common with Olay and their use of Niacinamide.
It absorbs easily and quickly after cleansing and toning, and is to be applied before your day or night cream.
I haven’t seen fantastic results from it so I won’t be repurchasing again and also I now prefer and love to use Paula’s Choice Skin brightening treatment, a more worth my money, generous and effective formula.

I really like this product – I use this serum as well as a selection of paula’s choice ones after my cleansing, toning and exfoliating routine. I have noticed a brightening affect when I use this serum in conjunction with my other serums and it has not broken me out. It is a nice one to try and doesn’t break the bank. I follow up with Drunk Elephant’s Virgin Marula Oil and place a face mask on for 15 minutes. Then, I massage the remainder of the mask serum into my skin and moisturise with my night time moisturiser (on rotation). I have noticed visible brightening of dark spots where pimples once resided over time. It’s also just a lovely pamper session when using these products at the end of a stressful day 🙂

This product does not work…used in conjunction w/the cream and nothing….in fact the cream broke me out. Jars and bottles used, and nothing. Just a waste of $. These products are just inferior quality….

I bought this in the hope of fading a freckle on my cheek. That might have been a little overly optimistic. My low rating isn’t because it couldn’t do that; it’s because it didn’t seem to do much of anything for my complexion. The texture is OK–a thin milk. The smell is your typical Olay smell (I’d prefer unscented). Pretty, minimalist packaging. Price would be OK if it worked.

I have been using this with the Olay Regenerist Luminous tone perfecting cream and in short it works. It didn’t cause any issues with my blemish prone and sensitive skin either which is a plus for me.
It hasn’t completely cleared out my hyper pigmentation spots but it has lightened them slightly.
I am trying other serums at the moment but this is still one of the better ones I’ve tried. I am like return to this product once I’ve cleared out my existing stash of skincare.

I was informed that Niacinamide promotes microcirculation on the skin, that’s why the skin looks flush and red upon application. The flushing fades after the serum dries on my face. Before discovering this product, I was on a constant prowl for a serum with a higher concentration of Niacinamide. I stumbled upon this product by accident and was pleasantly surprised that the first two ingredients were water and Niacinmaide. Ingredients that are in higher concentrations are typically listed first. I typically do not like to use Olay products due to the fact that the brand LOVES putting an ingredient that can be irritating to some people. The ingredients are Cyclotetra/penta/hexasiloxane. I was overjoyed that Olay Tone Perfecting Treatment did NOT have it.
Since the main ingredient increase microcirculation when applied, I thought of using the serum in conjunction with other products with high levels of antioxidants. Assuming that it could potentially boost other ingredients.
VITAMIN C SERUM (Unstable form L ascorbic acid) + OLAY TONE PERFECTING TREATMENT
First I experimented with serums with Vitamin C + the Olay serum. The result was absolutely awful. The redness that the Niacinamide caused was worsening and it dried my face to oblivion and was peeling insanely the next morning. I panicked and stopped using both. Then I discovered that products that are acidic can cause hydrolysis to Niacinamide and cause it to turn into nicotinic acid which can be irritating to a few people. Unfortunately I was one of said few. It is best to avoid products with a ph level lower than 5 or higher than 7.
Unfortunately I do not have the time and patience to test every product for ph value so I generally stayed away from any products containing any and i mean any acids. I used one moisturizer with a little citric acid at the end of the ingredient list and it highly irritated my face when used in conjunction with niacinamide. Even products with high levels of Hyaluronic acid was a no go in my experience.
Olay Tone Perfecting treatment already has a stable form of Vit. C (Ascorbyl Glucoside). I might look into adding stable versions of Vit. C in the future but for now L-ascorbic acid is a no no.
SUNFLOWER OIL + OLAY TONE PERFECTING TREATMENT
I then experimented using Olay Tone Perfecting Treatment alone. After several days, the serum made my skin a tiny bit dry. The dryness was not as bad as during the time I used the Olay serum with a Vit. C serum and it did not irritate my skin to oblivion this time. To fix the dryness I then layer Sunflower oil (an oil my skin loves) on top of the serum after it dries and discovered that the two products together was magical. My skin in the morning was very smooth to the touch and it was EFFING AWESOME. Unfortunately, the olay serum brightened my skin just a little bit. I saw very little improvement on my dark spots.
NOTE: You can achieve the same result if you use a rich moisturizer/oil that doesn’t give you bad reactions with Niacinamide serum. As long as the moisturizer is within 5-7 ph range.
RETINOL + SUNFLOWER OIL + OLAY TONE PERFECTING SERUM (THE HOLY GRAIL COMBINATION)
After 2 weeks i got tired of using sunflower oil + olay serum since I didn’t see any improvements but the combo didnt harm my skin. So I thought of tossing in another Antioxidant in my routine, Retinol. On a cleansed face, I put on the Olay Niacinamide Serum waited till it dried, then put on the Retinol cream and finally layered on the Sunflower Oil for added moisture. I immediately saw big improvements after 3 days with this combo.
The result was AMAZING. I have found my HG products. My pores were minimized, my dark spots fading and the overall health of my unfortunate dammaged skin significantly improved. This was 3 months ago and I still use the combination of these products and I can confidently say my dark spots are gone and my shallow scars have greatly improve.
Even though my results are amazing I do still get minor flakes because of the retinol so I use this combo only 3-4 times a week rather than every night. The Olay serum directions says it can be used morning and evening but it is better to use it at night if you wear Makeup regularly because the serum can pill.
UPDATE 08/14/2016: I replaced sunflower oil with soybean oil since it’s the only oil right now that doesn’t break me out. Be warned oils are very YMMV. Always patch test and good luck 😀
UPDATE!!!!! 01/07/2018: Ethylhexyl Palmitate in the product aggravated my skin in the form of clogged pores. I now use The Ordinary Niacinamide 10% + Zinc together with the retinoid. My skin has cleared finally without sacrificing the benefits of niacinamide.

I like this treatment. I have been using it in the morning as a serum underneath my moisturizer and sunblock.
I am always battling mild melasma and hyperpigmentation so anything with niacinamide at the top of the ingredient list is interesting to me. It also has newish “whitening agent” near the top of the list which is Undecylenoyl Phenylalanine.
I thought the packaging on this product was pretty especially considering it is a drugstore product. The inside of the bottle has a sleeve that the dropper slides down into which I think helps keep air out of the treatment. I like using a dropper vs having to dip into a product with my fingers.
It has a nice smooth consistency, it is not overly runny so it’s easy to control while you use it. I spread half a dropperful around on my face then let it dry for a bit before going to moisturizer. I have not found it to present any issue with my makeup. I don’t wear foundation but I do wear a fair amount of various products on top of this treatment and it has been fine.
I do think that it helps with maintaining a bright, even skin tone and preventing worse pigmentation issues. Granted I am also using Retin-A and 10% Hydroquinone alongside other rotating skin products so those are the big guns but this product supports their efforts during the day.
I see this as a product that I will buy in the future again. I will likely buy another different serum first once this one runs out and then cycle back to this later.

I am loving this Serum I use this when I am not utilising Hydroquinone 4%. Hydroquinone 4% is the gold standard for skin lightning. However the long term side effects can and are very real
I have rebound pigmentation which is very uneven and hard to treat. I use medical strength physical and chemical sunscreen of a minimum of SPF 30 and practice uva-uvb avoidance .
I have been testing Olay Regenerist Luminous serum, and I am impressed. For a non prescriptive over the counter treatment It is a game changer, in that it utilises a range of ingredients with proven extrinsic skin anti-aging ability.
With high levels of Niacinamide and acetyl glucosamine that have scientific research demonstrating their efficacy to fade skin discolouration’s.
It provides adequate Moisture as it treats uneven skin tone and primes the skin surface.
This is a very good formula that would absolutely be worth considering for those with normal to dry skin. It contains a blend of skin-identical ingredients, antioxidants, anti-irritants and cell-communicating ingredients. This contains an efficacious anti-aging amount of niacinamide, combined with acetyl glucosamine.
There are no adverse reactions to products containing N-Acetyl Glucosamine (NAG) and no adverse reactions have been found. Since glucosamine is usually derived from shellfish, those allergic to shellfish may wish to avoid it. However, since glucosamine is derived from the shells of these animals while the allergen is within the flesh of the animals, it is probably safe even for those with shellfish allergy.
