Pyunkang Yul is an organic Korean skincare brand that was launched recently. The ingredient list is simple and has been developed by a famous (so I`ve been told) clinic that uses traditional oriental herbs. So that`s what the marketing line touts, but the price was really reasonable and the label itself quite simple, too, which lead me to purchase it. It is…weird. Because the staff at the clinic didn`t speak English well, and the instructions were misleading, I thought it was a moisturizer. I thought, “A gel, huh. Daytime moisturizer for sure!” WRONG! The gel is the stickiest damn thing I`ve ever tried, and applying it after serum was odd and strange, and my sunscreen seemed to adhere to it and pill. Horrible. Oddly enough, it didn`t dry my skin with that awkward application. So I read up on the product from some Western sources and realized that this is not a moisturizer, but an occlusive last step meant to lock in all the products applied before it. So this is how I use it now. So far, so good. It spreads much better on top of moisturizer and I only apply it at night time now. It hasn`t broken me out, but my skin doesn`t feel more moisturized with this, than without. Not sure that it really does anything for me. I`m also worried if with consistent use this will not eventually clog my pores or cause irritation. My intuition tells me that my skin should breathe, so even though this is not heavy, I feel a bit odd about applying it every night, tbh. I clicked No on repurchase for this reason, but I can see someone with drier skin possibly appreciating this more than me. I will update if anything new develops.
UPDATE 2019/1/15: Okay, it took a bit of trial and error, but now I understand how to use this product properly and I have already repurchased my second jar. Definitely to be used only at nighttime and as the last step. My Differin treatment is taking a toll on my skin, and while I am not experiencing peeling or redness, my skin is drier than it has ever been, and my nighttime moisturizer can barely keep pace. I mean, I used to wake up to plump skin, even last winter, but once I’ve introduced Differin, that is no longer the case. My skin feels stressed, parched and tight. However, there is a notable difference in hydration if I apply the Balancing Gel over any moisturizer at bedtime. My skin is almost as hydrated as before Differin in the morning with the gel. That was enough to convince me and the difference between going to bed with this or without is pretty obvious.
