Yes, you should marinate yourself in glycolic acid, and here is why: virtually anyone on the planet benefits from adding some AHA to their regimen. While chemical exfoliants and fruit acids have been around quite some time (especially popular in the 90s), they are still considered the bomb for various of reasons that I will include below. PTR did us all a favour by adding 10% of the stuff to this gel that I’m about to review, but the brand also make an amazing cream with the same percentage. I’ve used both and they are equally great; however, you get slightly more product for your money with the gel, so that one is what I typically use.
Glycolic acid is used to even out the skin by removing dead surface cells and also by stimulating collagen production in the deeper layers. More surprisingly, the acid is extremely moisturizing, creating hydration from within rather than sitting on the surface. PTR lists the strength, which is absolutely essential. You want to know how much you actually get; personally, I don’t see the benefits of going under ten percent. They’ve also added vitamin A, C and E to it, probably in trace amounts (nothing to get excited about). A bottle will last forever and you should be consistent with it; the beginning is tough with some initial breakouts for most people. This is normal and will pass. Pores get cleaner over time, but if acne is your main overall issue, BHA acids or retinoids will serve you better than AHAs such as glycolic acid.
To get more out of the product, I spike mine with a 50 percent glycolic acid peel, making the overall percentage of my PTR gel higher. This will make it sting (originally it doesn’t), but unlike retinoids, the irritation only lasts for seconds. My skin is supremely hydrated and smooth since starting doing this. I wish the brand would put out a stronger variety, but I guess they want to play it safe and please a larger target group, which it’s totally understandable. Sensitivity is difficult to estimate, but it’s definitively easier to tolerate glycolic acid than strong retinoids (which are also drying), and at 10%, my guess is that most people won’t have an issue with this overall wonderful product.
To break it down:
Best for: dry, dull skin.
Good for: Aging skin, congested pores.
Unsuitable/likely non-effective for: Severe acne, extremely reactive and sensitive skin, rosacea.

A truly great product. I have been using this for a year and a half now. I have both aging and acne problems (although I look very young for my age). This is one of the only products I have used which does not cause more acne.
My skin texture improved dramatically and remains so as long as I use it. I started applying every day (at night) and then reduced to 2-3 times per week (otherwise, yes, redness can result). My skin also looks smoother.
After you have been using it for a while, a little can go a long way. One pump applied judiciously is usually enough (more may cause redness). This product also lasts me at least six months per bottle so the price becomes quite reasonable.

I LOVE this product for my previously horrible skin! I have normal but acne prone skin and typically acne products tend to dry me out. This is definitely HG status for me and I’ve used it religiously for 4 years now (and that’s saying something for me who loves to try new products!). I use this every night, and when I wake up my skin is soft, pores appear reduced and if I have any spots even they are reduced in size. I’ve used this in conjunction with lactic peels and it’s completely changed my skin. I highly recommend this product!

I used this for 6 months to combat adult acne and age spots. I saw no improvement.

I’ve been using this now for a few years and I will continue to use it religiously. I have oily skin and this product doesn’t let me skin freak out like it used to. The tone is even, never red, and smooth. Love it. Big fan… clearly.

I have been using this product for years. I’m 40 years old and faced with the indignity of having to fight both wrinkles and break-outs at the same time. This works wonders on both. I actually ran out of it once and didn’t re-buy right away because I wasn’t sure it was really doing anything for me. Within two weeks of not using it, my skin felt rougher, my lines were more noticeable, and my skin in general looked duller. I’ll never run out again.

Okay, after the recent bad reviews, I’m going to be the dissenting voice here and say I really like this product. I don’t have acne-prone skin, but I haven’t experienced any breakouts from this at all…as a matter of fact, I didn’t even experience my normal hormonal breakout during TTOTM this month.
My skin has become much smoother and more luminous. The texture is finer, discoloration has disappeared (although it wasn’t obvious in the first place) and ruddiness in my cheeks has faded.
This does make my skin tingle on application, but that dies down in a few minutes. The gel feels cool going on, and it sinks in completely.
I will definitely repurchase this product.

I have to agree with MAS520. I had high hopes for this product but my skin did the exact same thing as hers/his. First good looking skin, then terrible pimples on my cheeks, the big ones. I never get pimples unless I try a new product that is awful. This one is awfull, it’s going back to Sephora. Don’t know what product I’m going to use to simulate an at home chemical facial but I guess I’ll keep reading. If you have clear skin now, pass on this product because if you use it, you won’t have clear skin for long.

I’m really torn on this product. I started using this for my hormonal acne and clogged pores. I used it as directed… increasing usage at 2 wk intervals. At first it seemed like it was working on the clogged pores I had on my forehead, but after about a month I began purging. By this time I was using the product 2x a day. I was prepared for the purging but I was breaking out all over my cheeks. I’m an oily t-zone girl, and my breakouts are generally confined to my nose and chin area. However, I started breaking out all over my cheeks. I have never had pimples on my cheeks before! The worst part is that I have brown skin that gets discolored after every blemish (whether I mess with it or not!) I cut down my usage to just at night and it made my skin a little bit better. This gel has definitely helped me control the oilyness of my skin. My skin has calmed down but I definitely have more hyperpigmentation than I did before using this. I like the idea of AHAs, but I think I’m going to try either Merle Norman’s AHAs, Exuviance bionic serum, or MaMa Lotion next. PROS: Makes skin less oily, lasts a long time (just need one pump), helps control clogged pores a little. CONS: purging in new areas, price (but it does last a while)

Okay I only used this once…my bf has been using it for awhile and his skin has been pretty good, I dont see any black heads on him like I used to. So I decided to use this when I didnt bring my face wash (pro activ) and it worked wonderfully. I have a lot of pores on my nose and it was bumpy from me picking on it and after the use of this wash they all went down…no more bumps well i mean there were a few left but it was a lot less! I might have to buy this after I finish my pro activ face wash!
