This skin protectant has been around since 1930, and I was reminded of it when I was watching a video on YouTube about vintage products. I was concerned mostly about the scent, and I can see how it’s compared to the smell of bandaids. There was also a L’Oreal lip gloss that came in a pot, that I used in Middle School in the 80s, that had a scent similar to this, which was actually what I first thought of when I smelled it. The scent mostly fades after about 30 minutes, and luckily it doesn’t bother me as much as I thought it would.
It’s not a white cream, but I don’t think this feels exactly ike Vaseline either. When it comes out of the tube, it reminds me of tube lip gloss or ointment. It’s a sheer amber/ apricot color, but when you rub it in, it’s clear. It’s very spreadable, and you only need a small amount. You can use it on your lips (not my favorite- I might have to try unscented for that area), cuticles, under eyes, on eye brows, the backs of hands, dry areas, etc. I hear people who spend time outdoors in harsh winter climates use this as a protectant, but I haven’t tried it that way yet. There is a sheen, but I find that after about 30 minutes, your skin absorbs it, and the sheen is mostly gone. I don’t find it to be sticky. Also there’s not enough BHA this to exfoliate, the ph is too high, so it’s not an acidic exfoliant.
You can find it cheaper online, but I paid full price for mine (about $25). I love using this cult classic product that has withstood the test of time.

This stuff is GOLD! I am writing to raise awareness of the magic this cream is capable of. I use it for my severely chapped lips. It also works on all dry skin and is great for hands and nail! I get some flaking around my nostrils in the winter and i put this stuff in and around my nose! This stuff was originally created to heal burns back in the early 20th century. I found this product when i read an article about Prince Harry using this stuff as chap stick in the North pole! I decided to try it and my family and I have been using it ever since. The weird smell is lanolin, which is a main ingredient derived from sheep’s wool. Yeah it sounds kinda gross but totally makes sense why it is such an effective moisturizer. One tube will normally last me a year or more. It’s expensive but anything that works miracles should be, right?

I won’t get into the smell much, I could’ve just bought unscented, so that’s on me, and I would put up with a bad smell in a product that performed well. I strongly suggest the unscented version if you want to try this.
I agree that this could serve as an occlusive, but I would personally choose any other occlusive over this because of how terribly sticky it is.
It really just sits on my skin as a terribly yucky glue, doesn’t moisturize or soothe, let alone repair as I had hoped it would because I wanted to use it on my ghastly winter hands. As it doesn’t actually *do stuff* for me other than just sit there in it’s sticky stickiness, I couldn’t even get use out of it as an emmolient on dry and rough patches. On my lips, I can count at least seventeen other items off the top of my head that work great for moisture, protection, soothing, healing, plumping, softening, lipstick base, you name it, and many of which a lot of us have lying around anyway, so really don’t see why I would use this pungent, waxy, gluey mess on them.
I was hoping it would at least do something on a stubborn, callous-looking patch by applying regularly. I regret having gone through the bother with such an offputting product as the results after a month were zero nada nothing.
Maybe it depends on skin type, but on me…a real disappointment.
Face treatment? Lol. Fat chance, for me at least.
I would agree with the glorified vaseline mentions except that I can actually get vaseline to work for several purposes, sans the sticky gunky annoyance and paying way more than it’s worth.

Think of this cream as your classic lanolin-based type of a product, one you would use for pretty much any (annoying) skin concern. Whether it is dryness, flakiness, chapped lips, peeling cuticles, cuts, burns, bites etc. – this is stuff that will soothe and calm your skin down. It is pretty much your classic Vitamin E with a bit of Salicylic Acid added to it.

I’ve only ever bought one tube which has lasted me ages (2+ years). It seems pretty expensive when you see the packaging and what you get but a little bit goes a long way. Useful for: face, body, lips, eyelashes, brows, burns, cuts, cuticles…
I have very dry skin and this moisturises super quickly. I wear lipstick most days too which dries my lips out so I use this and scrub with a toothbrush which really helps before applying anything.
I know the scent isn’t for everyone but I like it – there is also a scent-free option too.
The texture is pretty much like a thicker Vaseline which can be a bit off putting as it’s quite sticky. It doesn’t need to be used all over though and can just be applied to problem areas of the skin.
I can’t say what it would be like for oily/combination skin but I’d definitely recommend it for dry!

I’m actually kind of disappointed in this product. I love EA products, it is a very high quality and vastly underrated brand but this cream missed the mark for me. It may in fact be super moisturizing but I can’t get past the smell or the texture to give it a real chance. Another reviewer mentioned it feels like glorified Vaseline and that is not far from the truth. It is definitely more of a barrier cream rather than one that absorbs into the skin and if you can tolerate that sticky feeling then you might like it but all I wanted to do was wipe my face because it made me itch like crazy.

For those who for their own reasons despise this product it’s worth explaining the history. This was developed by a physician for burn victims needing a barrier balm to seal in hydration while soothing damaged skin and protecting new forming skin. It worked for that and beyond.
Also, at one time many years ago we did not have as many lovely skincare options as we do today. As much as I am sure there are more elegant options this still remains my one old school reliable option for maintaining crack free lips and cuticles. I am never far from a tube of this magical goo.
I will add I bloody despise Vaseline. I hate the color, the scent and the insipid tub in which it is contained. But, I know there are people for whom it is their holy grail. Not me. No, no, no.
EA 8 Hour Cream is my grail. I will use this as long as I have skin on which to apply.
I wear this as an outer eye cream and during cold weather there is a layer of this on my face, hands and feet.
I also love A & D ointment but rarely use because whatever body part I apply this to several of my cats cannot stop licking me!
I’ve been using EA 8 Hour Cream since 1985. When I see a tube at HomeGoods it is purchased. I keep one in my bathroom, nightstand and car. I give it for gifts.

I noticed that Elizabeth Arden had released a fragrance free… well almost…. version of the brand’s Eight Hour Cream Skin Protectant so I thought I would give it a try. I remember my mom using this when I was little and I almost even remember the scent. The Fragrance Free Version has a very very light vanilla scent from the addition of Vanillin, the scent dissipates almost immediately. The formula is pretty basic, petroleum, lanolin, mineral oil, and salicylic acid. This does a decent job of protecting skin from weather and coats skin to keep moisture in. I’ve been using this on my neck which gets very dry, especially during the nighttime. I’m not really certain that this does much more than petroleum or vaseline, but I do like the squeeze tube and a few more emollients. If you have acne prone (even if you don’t) I would be careful applying the Eight Hour Cream Skin Protectant to your face because it has quite the potential to cause breakouts. I have the fragrance free version and I love it. I use it on my face and body whenever anything looks sensitive or irritated, and this calms it right down. I also use this as a night “cream” on my face when I’ve been out in the sun or wind all day, or when my face feels dehydrated, and I wake up with plump and glowing skin. It does have a thick consistency and takes a bit of time to sink into my skin, even if using a small amount, but it’s entirely worth it.

I use this product as a lip balm and it soothes my lips like no other product. I have a tube of the original which does have a distinctive scent but it isn’t unpleasant. There is a fragrance-free version available too. I use a small amount of this everyday before I apply lip products. If my lips are ever chapped and sore, this is the first product I reach for. It is quite thick in texture so I find a little goes a long way. I highly recommend this as a lip treatment/balm and lip products apply well on top too.

I’m glad I only had a sample. I was thrilled to get the sample to use, but that’s where it ended. I was literally horrified at the site, smell and texture of this cream.
I had to take it off because it smelled so bad and if felt like I put Vaseline on my face.
I think I will use the rest of the sample on my heels.
I would not purchase this item at all. This was a huge miss.

I’d heard about the Original Eight Hour Cream many times before but only recently had the opportunity to try it. It’s now a staple in my makeup bag. I love that it has multi uses and cuts down the amount of ‘essentials’ in my bag. I use this on my lips before I go to bed and I wake up with soft moisturized lips.

i have dry sun damaged aging skin. I use as an overnight face mask over a high percentage Vitamin C serum and its great. The Vitamin E and C are supposed to complement each other. This is a heavy cream but its also neutral in that its not going to irritate sensitive skin. As my skin is naturally dry, this cream doesn’t clog or get too heavy on my pores. It does make my skin nice and soft the next morning. Really loving it. A lot goes a long way so good value for money.

I have read lots of positive reviews on this so I finally bought the 50ml tube. I like that it is a tube so it is hygenic. Sales ladies told me that it can be used on face, lips, hands and body like my legs. I thought I would get over the smell, which is suspiciously like lanolin, but it never fails to gross me out. This brown gel is too thick to effectively spread on any surface. I feel that the tugging on my face would result to wrinkles and fine lines. I also feel that this does not sink in and it does not let skin breathe. It is too greasy to use on my face or my hands so I spread it on my legs but it is just to sticky so my clothes stick to my skin and becomes coated in that awful smell. When I finally read the ingredients, I realized it has petrolatum (bad), mineral oil (bad), paraben (bad) as well as lanolin (stinky) and vitamin E (good but could be allergenic). For the price, scent, ingredients, stickiness, lack of spreadability, this is an absolute NO for me. This almost unused tube is going into the garbage..not even worth passing on to someone.

I received a whole bunch of 2ml sample packs when I purchased some ROC skin care products. Winter has set in and I am grateful to have this. My job dries my hands out quite a bit, and especially in winter, when it seems like I can’t retain any moisture in my hands to speak of. Cracking, dry knuckles and cuticles.
This works very well and not just on hands and cuticles, but also eczema patches on the body/face, drying/cracked lips, gritty elbows, calluses on feet, etc.
You only have to use a small amount to get the desired effect. It seems to add a moisture barrier to my hands (or wherever I put it) and even when I wash my hands I seem to retain moisture. Thank the heavens!
It has a orangey/citrus smell that is almost medicinal. Not an issue for me. Could be one for others who hates citrus.
The price is a little high for the full bottle, and I don’t think I would pay this much… But I’m not sure, maybe I would because I haven’t found a better product.
And no, Vaseline would not be just as effective. I have tried Vaseline and it does nothing to regenerate the moisture barrier on my lips/hands, and is pore clogging and zit causing for the face, due to the main ingredient of petroleum jelly.
This Elizabeth Arden balm has a main ingredient of lanolin, which is richly moisturizing.
In conclusion, a top of the line product for the dryest of dry skin. Lasts a long time, smells not too bad and is effective. Not sure if I would purchase again. I may purchase another product rich in lanolin for a cheaper price. Would recommend to others who suffer from dry skin related to work or cold weather.

I bought this cream more than 1 year ago. I use it for my lips, elbows and skin around my nails. My husband uses when he sees a dry patch on his skin that sometimes appears after shaving. Usually overnight the problematic area (dry lips, dry skin) is feeling refreshed and healing. You need to apply only a small dosage so the cream lasts for a long time. I agree that you could use vaseline and probably got the same result. However I like this product because it always came to rescue.
