This is my new fave spot treatment. I have moderate, cystic acne, and have previously tried the drying lotion, which didn’t do much for my skin, apart from drying it out. I read that the buffering lotion is actually better for cystic acne, and decided to try it out because of the rave reviews on here.
At first, I was a little confused as how to apply it, as the Mario Badescu website said it should by applied directly on to dry skin, and that should not apply anything on top. I usually use the Overnight Clearing Gel by Dermalogica followed by the Cicapair Tiger Grass Balm, both of which really help my skin, so it didn’t make sense to me to skip these steps. If you have only one or two pimples, you might be able to apply the spot treatment by itself onto them, and then use your preferred serum and moisturizer on the rest of your face, but I just applied my serum first, waited for it to dry, followed with the buffering lotion, and then topped with the moisturizer, after the buffering lotion had dried down.
The product itself is a thin whitish liquid. Be sure to shake the bottle before you apply, otherwise the powder in the bottom will not evenly distribute. I wash my hands and pour a small amount out in to my palm, and then “dot” it onto the problem areas with my fingers. Quite a hassle, but I’ve found this is the best way to apply without wasting product, as the liquid is as thin as water.
This did in no way irritate or dry out my skin like other spot treatments I have used previously (BP, I’m looking at you).
This either brings my pimples to a head within a day or two, so I’m able to pop them, or flattens the pimple almost completely, so it’s easier to cover up. Usually cystic acne can persist for weeks on my face, this product helps clear it within days.
I have been using it for a couple of weeks now, and while it didn’t clear my face completely, it definitely has improved my acne.
I’m currently waiting to see a derm about going on Accutane, but I’m trying to make my skin at least tolerable in the meanwhile, and this has surely contributed positively to that.

I first tried this product because I heard zinc was good for cystic acne. I’ve since gone through two bottles (a few years apart), but I don’t think I’ll repurchase. It just doesn’t do enough–I’m having much better luck with liquid exfoliants. If you’re interested in trying it, here’s what to know. The zinc (I assume) settles at the bottom, so you need to shake before using. It should look like a runny white-ish fluid. Fingertips is the easiest, least wasteful way to apply. It can be drying, so apply only to affected areas. The going price is $19 USD for 1 fl oz.

When I first tried this product, I wasn’t impressed, but I actually have hopes for it now. I’m 27 years old and acne has decided to take over my face again. Cysts and white heads. Nothing seemed to work on getting my face back to being clear again. I’ve seen nothing but amazing reviews on this product so I didn’t waste any time getting it. I followed the instructions on the bottle and applied it to the problem areas with my fingers. It actually aggravated the acne. Some of the small cysts became even bigger. So I tried applying the product with a cotton ball the next day… aggravated the acne again. I went a day without using the buffering lotion after that. Then I touched my face randomly one day and I felt tiny spikes of skin (that’s really the only way I can describe it) on my face. They just happened to be in the same areas where my acne was located. I realized that those “spikes of skin” were actually dried up cysts and pimples. The skin had basically shriveled up and hardened, which is why it felt like a spike. I guess this product starts on the inside and works it’s way out. I’m shocked that it still worked even though I went a day without using it. Definitely going to keep using it. Give it time to work if you’re new to the product.

I had been suffering from severe adult acne (hormonal, cystic) and researched a couple of products that could help and came across this little bottle. Though the Drying Lotion from Mario Badescu is raved about, I’m surprised this isn’t even more so! Dabbing a little of this on with a cotton swab over several cystic acne breakouts and the next morning they’re severely lessened and by day three basically gone! I do that and sometimes for more serious breakouts I’ll cover the area with a COSRX pimple patch and it’s like magic. I’ve got sensitive skin and while the smell is a little strong, it goes away and doesn’t tingle in the slightest. If you can get past the weird packaging (it’s a dropper-like bottle which I usually drop into the actual lid and then dip swabs) and are struggling with cystic acne, this does everything it says it does.

I always have this in my cabinet. I don’t need it every day, but it is very effective at resolving small bumps and minor breakouts, stopping them in their tracks without irritation. Price is very reasonable, and lasts a long time when tightly capped. Really excellent, unique product that does what it promises.

This stuff is magic. I first bought the infamous drying lotion for my cystic acne that I’ve had since I was a teen. I used it on a stress breakout and it didn’t seem to help the deep pulsating painful bumps, as I figured nothing would-this has always been my fight with acne. I went to ulta to see if I could find anything else to help with a new planet trying to block one of my nostrils that was causing me to grimace in pain every time I talked, and came across this product. I followed the directions, and by the next morning it was half its size and it didn’t cause my head to pound anymore. In my book, that’s witchcraft. I’ve only been using this for 3-4 months, but can’t imagine being without it in future. Initially, I really disliked the runny texture and thought it was awkward to apply, however, now that I’ve got the hang of it, it’s easy to apply, though it does take some getting used to. I get very isolated hormonal breakouts and this has helped clear them very, very fast. Usually within two days, any blemish I develop is starting to go away which is remarkable. This is a wonderful and effective product that I hope will be around for a long time. I recommend this to anyone with hormonal breakouts.
