This was a very unsatisfactory base coat. It succeeded only in preventing my applied nail color from discoloring my natural nails. I applied this jointly with Essence’s the Gel line in the color “Dream On” and used their top coat. The products did not provide superior wear time, it chipped within about 2 days from normal daily wear. Somehow the product glued itself shut and the cap broke off from the bottle. I have never had that happen before. This base coat was just as obnoxiously thick and goopy as the rest of their line. Ugh. Hard pass.

Great base coat for a great price!
The full system of base+color+top coat didn’t work for me (chipped really quickly), but luckily I gave the base coat another try. It works perfectly for all my gel-like manicures and helps them last a full week at least without my nails getting weak or chipping.
I’ve compared the same nail polishes over a more expensive base coat (Essie first base), and it performed much worse. The nail polish chipped quicker and also some of my nails started braking.
I took one lipstick off for packaging because in the bottle I bought for my mom, the brush often stays inside the polish while the cap gets off, but it’s still manageable.

This is Essence ‘s best base coat I have used so far , I have used two of them before and didn’t like them , this one is truly good .

This is so cheap but it is AMAZING. When I use this and the essence better than gel top sealer my nail polish doesn’t chip- even the most chip prone polishes I own last for at least 5 days.
I like the fact that it dries to a matte finish, as it makes the nail polish apply better.
The one annoying thing is the opaque packaging- I have no idea how much is left.

I am currently on my 4th (5th?) bottle of this base coat, as it has become a staple in my nail regimen. The biggest reason for that is because this base coat has actually improved the quality and condition of my nails. I have tried many many treatments to improve/grow out my nails, but they have always been brittle, peeling, temperamental little things that required very delicate handling to maintain any sort of length or shape.
I use Duri Rejuvacote as my base coat, and yeah, that does a decent job of helping growth, but it wasn’t doing anything for the peeling or brittle nature of my nails. In fact, it seemed to be making it worse. When I started layering this base coat on top of the Duri, I noticed 2 benefits: manicures lasting much longer, and the condition of my nails vastly improving. The peeling and brittleness went away, and my nails actually grow so fast that I have to file them down for length a couple of times a week now. That’s something that’s never happened to me. They retain their shape when filed, and don’t break and snap at the slightest provocation like before. I swear, it’s because of this base coat.
Be warned, though, this base coat is not without it’s drawbacks. For one, it probably doubles dry time for your mani, even if you do use a QDTC. Because it’s a gel, it stays mushy and tacky for a long time, and can be problematic in that it can cause bubbling and/or smudging wrinkling of your mani if you don’t give it enough time to “set” before you apply color. You can apply QDTC, sure, but you’ll notice that although the immediate surface is touchable, the color remains “mushy” and wrinkle-able for hours after.
In addition, it can cause shrinkage like crazy if it gets even the tiniest bit thick. I have to remain diligent about keeping it properly thinned, or else my manis shrink before my eyes as they are drying, even when no Seche Vite or any of the other usual shrinkage suspects have been applied. The same is true for the matching top coat (although I’ll address that issue in a separate review).
All in all, yes, this base coat is tricky and has issues, but the benefits for my nails and manicure durability outweigh the drawbacks, and I’m willing to work with it for those reasons. The price is great, and readily available at Ulta, so no shipping/waiting required. If you are like me and can take time to do your nails, this is a great base coat to use and I recommend it. If you are in a hurry, I would suggest you use an alternative and save this for a time when you can allow this base coat the time it needs to work through all it’s quirks.

Ugh was having high hopes for this after reading the other reviews on here. Bought this hoping I wouldn’t have to use a UV Lamp for gel nail polish and really doesn’t do anything under your nail polish my nails chipped the next day! won’t be buying again, maybe why it’s so cheap. the price was very good.

I bought this base coat together with gel top coat. I paid £2.50 for it and therefore didn’t expect anything extraordinary. But it is brilliant, especially bearing the price in mind. I still haven’t tried Orly Bonder, but this base coat is superior to everything else I tried. Would repurchase in a heartbeat.

When it comes to base coats what I’ve come to expect so far is just preventing nail staining. Those I’ve worn so far hadn’t made any difference beyond that so I wasn’t expecting much of this one either.
That said, I was pleasantly surprised – and it’s the cheapest I’ve ever tried too!
Consistency is slightly thick but applies nicely. The color is transparent cloudy light blue but doesn’t show on the nails. The packaging is opaque which I don’t like so I decanted the content to an empty clean Essie bottle.
What’s great about it is that it DOES extend the life of your nail polish! Even when worn it under Essie’s Sole Mate – which chips or just shows tip wear the next day on me without fail – it lasted two more days in perfect condition. Also tried it with various other polishes and even when you can finally see the cracks on the surface of the nail days after application it resists chipping.
