This is my current fave base coat – it grips the nail like nothing else I’ve tried. That’s the obvious pro. It also has minor ridge-smoothing properties (if you have major ridges, however, this will not likely do the job).
However, I’m on the fence about the issue the former reviewer mentions re. dryness:
–first, I keep my nails super short (not past end of my fingertips – I play guitar/piano), so it could be that the Simply Smooth uber-grip is so strong that it does cause cracking/breakage on the more vulnerable long fingernail.
–when I have peeled my polish off (I know, I know…), it will actually *lift* off top portions of the nail – yikes! So drying? Well, yeah, if you do that for sure!
–May not truly be drying, as when I use 100% acetone to remove my polish (because this combo of base, polish and top is formidable) – and I do so properly by holding soaked cotton over the nail for a bit and then doing one firm swipe from base to tip – I’ve noticed zero dryness or ill effects. However..
–I use their nail oil, which is therapeutic and imo awesome. So any dryness from top coat for me is probably mitigated by using the oil.
There is one real caveat:
–if you do not seal the end of the nail with Simply Smooth, followed by the same in polish and top coat (and in the case of BK’s Simply Quick top coat, reapplying 1x the day following your manicure, again sealing the tips), the bond is so strong that when water swells the exposed tips, you will get splitting (a portion of nail comes off still bonded w/ base/color/top). This is a downer to be sure, but avoidable when you apply as mentioned.
Overall I’m completely happy with this base/top combo and I use it for all my manicures. For me it’s five lippies in spite of the above because they’re just proper application and removal issues – I honestly cannot think of anything they could improve. Worth every penny imo.

My nails are dry and break (split) at the sides. This opaque pink, ridge-filling base coat is 3-free. It made my nails dry and while I was wearing it two nails split at the side. I don’t recommend it if your nails are dry/delicate.
