I first heard about this kind of product from a YouTuber who used a Hot Head brand. I couldn’t find that on amazon, so I looked for something similar with good reviews and found this for $15.00.
The concept is simple – wash your hair and apply deep conditioner/hair mask, throw this shower cap-looking thingy in your microwave for 90 seconds to heat up the gel it contains, tuck your hair up into the cap and let the heat help your conditioner to penetrate your hair for 30-60 minutes, then rinse. The cap is made of quilted nylon (?) material that is thick and waterproof, and inside each quilted “pocket” is gel that maintains the heat so you don’t have a cord to worry about.
When I was reading the reviews, someone suggested using those disposable clear plastic processing hair caps over your hair before putting on this heat cap so there’s no mess. I ordered them at the same time as this from amazon, and was glad that I did! Without them, you’re going to have to clean greasy conditioner from the inside of the cap every time you use it. I paid an additional $7 for 100 of the disposable caps but will probably check around at Sally Beauty to see if I can get some cheaper.
The biggest problem I saw from negative reviews for this and similar products were when the caps would get too hot while heating in the microwave and would pop. I’ve had no problem with this at all, but I’m always very careful not to go over 90 seconds. I guess it depends on your microwave’s wattage.
I’m really happy with this purchase. I feel like it boosts the effectiveness of my hair masks and makes it easier to use them in the first place. The cap can be a tad heavy but I had no problem with it. Fits my head just fine and there’s enough room for my shoulder-length hair to fit inside. I usually use this on Sunday nights, and make it a whole thing – I apply a korean sheet mask to my face (since my hair is tucked up and out of the way anyway), white strips to my teeth and self-tanner to my body. Then I just lie back and find something on Netflix for about an hour until it’s time to remove and rinse. However, I have worn this while puttering around the house and found it was fine – no slipping and sliding.
For the price, I would recommend giving this a shot. I really like mine!
