Every morning, I use an acid exfoliating toner after cleansing. My goal is anti aging. This contains a low dose of bha (salycilic acid if I spelled that right), and is the acid toner I reach for when I’m sensitive from my other actives (tretinoin mainly). It’s the only Clinique clarifying lotion sans alcohol which by itself is a boon to me; I don’t use alcohol on my face ever. I don’t really get the bad reviews. Other mornings I’m not sensitive, I use the ordinary glycolic, or Paulas choice salicylic. I rotate between the 3. My pores are non existent and skin never flaky. I don’t exfoliate twice daily since I use a lot of other actives.

Bought this because I was looking for a new acid toner while at Sephora and thought I remembered seeing it recommended on a skin care blog. It’s not terrible as a toner (hence two stars instead of one), but it does nothing as an acid. The best I can say is that it removed the remnants of my makeup and didn’t irritate my skin. (I also like the witch hazel smell.) I used it up, but I won’t repurchase.
I like the look of the bottle (milky green and a little chunky), but it’s got a wide mouth with nothing to regulate the flow of liquid out of it, making it easy to dispense too much product. The price is reasonable for the amount ($25.50 for 6.7 fl oz), though it’d be more reasonable if this actually worked as an exfoliant.

This product is NOT an equivalent substitute for the remarkable lotion it replaced. I find this works about as well as sensitive stridex brand pads but with less burn/drying. It does not rid my skin of acne but it helps to some degree. I do not notice consistent results when using it, especially when compared to its predecessor. It is not excessively drying but it could provide more moisture. It does an okay job of chemical exfoliation to even out skin tone, but it is not great by any means.
Given that it does not sufficiently meet expectations for any of the categories I look for in a toner, I can’t rate it very high. It works, just not very well and it doesn’t meet everything I need it to, especially not when I could comparably buy a bottle of which hazel and shrug my shoulders with “it does an okay job…” Really not wowed here.

I’ve been liking this… I have tried Clinique on & off over the past 30+ years and was never happy with the whole system, nor felt it did anything for my skin. But I’ve been finding in more recent years my dry skin does best when layering products and Clinique is definitely not a “one and done” skin care line so it works for me. I can switch them up without having anything bad happen and keep at bay the bordeom of using the same few products all the time. And kudos to Clinique for keeping their skin care fragrance-free as it seems like everyone (except for Paula’s Choice) will try to sneak some in sooner or later and think no one’s looking.
This latest version of their alcohol-free clarifying lotion is decent enough to incorporate a little Salicylic Acid into my regime as I feel SA helps to keep my skin clear and glowing and give some of the exfoliation I need to keep away the dry skin bumpies I get from piling on heavy moisturizers. I also swipe it on other areas of my body where I experience mild skin irritations. There are a few other beneficials included and witch hazel has never bothered my skin if it’s a water based extract.
This product is by no means rocket science and although Clinique has finally gotten their foot through the 21st century door of skin beneficials. I, even as someone who likes how my skin does using their products, think they need to fire whoever was/still is smoking crack and thinks using a toner with alcohol is perfectly fine for someone with dry and slightly sensitive skin. Any time a Clinique consultant twit tries to push the Clairfying Lotion 1 on me I have to just walk away because I want to pour it out all over their silly skin consultation charts and light it on fire. I do use the 7 day scrub cream & turnaround serum to help with exfoliation as well, so it’s not a strong stand-alone product, but for me it is working just fine.

I used to use the Mild Clarifying “lotion” (whose idea of a lotion are these toners??) buy I’ve been using this w good results but I’ve got v oily skin I find lotion #1 to be plenty strong. This will be perf for summer.

I used to use the Mild Clarifying Lotion but sadly it’s been discontinued and replaced with this new toner. Personally, I don’t care for this new product at all. It’s very strong and drying. It might be good for someone who’s really oily, but it was too harsh for my sensitive, combination skin.

I’ve recently moved onto this clarifying lotion as the alcohol in the other ones was causing issues for my skin. I like how this gets the job of exfoliation done without any irritation. I prefer the consistency to the mild that this one has replaced. 🙂

This says that it’s for all skin types, but that was not true for me. This made my dry skin even drier even though Clinique says that there is no alcohol in it. It did not make my skin feel smoother, either. I would not buy this again.

I got this on my recent trip to the Clinique counter. I was looking for a gentle exfoliator with salicylic acid to complement my skin care routine. I was told this was amazing and had all the benefits of the clarifying lotions without the denatured alcohol content. I remember trying the 3 step system in the past and finding it atrocious. A drying cleanser, a paint stripping alcoholic solution and a useless heavy gel or breakout inducing oily lotion, sums up my experience well. However, because it is not easy to find a toner with salicylic acid that doesn’t contain either fragrance or alcohol, I decided to try it.
Even though this toner doesn’t contain alcohol, it does contain a copious amount of witch hazel water and a considerably small amount of salicylic acid. Unsurprisingly, this lotion became very drying as days went on and did not do much. One night I used this and then put on the Clinique moisture surge and my face was bright red and felt uncomfortably hot, stinging a lot! This is when I decided it needed to go back.
I have to say I did not have much luck with Clinique products so far. I love the idea of fragrance free skincare and smart ingredients rather than exotic extracts that don’t do anything (Nuxe, Clarins, etc). I hope I get better luck with the moisture surge and the eye cream I bought! I will add reviews in the appropriate time.
