Cosme Decorte is the luxury line of Japanese skincare brand Kose, and the star ingredient of this toner is white birch sap from birch forests in the Bifuka area in northern Hokkaido. According to the company, the sap is rich in minerals and “the most important quality of white birch water is its ability to normalise skin metabolism and boost interaction between the epidermis and dermis. Apparently, this encourages cell production in both layers.”
Cultivation of the sap is only done once yearly between April and May when the snow melts. That probably explains the outrageous price for this – S$219 for a 200ml bottle!!
Luckily I work in the media industry and picked up a full-sized bottle without paying a penny. I’m halfway through the bottle now and I can’t say my skin’s texture has improved drastically. Perhaps you need longer sustained use to see major results eventually, but it sure seems too steep a price to pay.
I’m not saying this is a bad product though – my skin feels fresh, soft and supple, and it removes all traces of makeup – but I thought most toners were supposed to do that anyway. So what gives?
Buy it only if you want to give yourself a really good pampering but be prepared to stick with it for the long haul if you expect drastic results. I say there are definitely cheaper alternatives out there, and if anything, the money would be better spent on a serum or moisturiser instead of just this lotion toner.
