I recently tried this for the first time and I really love it. This is probably the best hair spray I’ve ever used. My hair is straight and layered. Most other hair sprays I always feel I have to use so much in order to get an all day hold. This hair spray I can spray once and go. It is a little pricey but I feel that for me, since I have to use so much less each time, it may actually be a better value in the long run.

This is a recent purchase for me. After my beloved Aussie Instant Freeze aerosol spray changed their formula and is now heavy, wet, greasy, sticky and no longer holds, I’ve had to go on yet another search for a strong-holding hairspray for my super fine, silky, very layered shoulder-length black hair. I need a hairspray that works with teasing and will hold my volume, which is not an easy task because although my hair is fine, the silkyness of it makes it really heavy and want to fall flat. Many aerosol sprays also leave a white cast or droplets in my black hair, which is obviously not pretty. I want to find another cheap everyday spray with great hold, but this has proven to be very difficult. Desperate for something decent in the meantime, I splurged and picked up this hairspray for $20.99 CAD at Shoppers Drug Mart. I had the idea in my head that since it’s a better quality spray, maybe it’ll be stronger and go a lot further so I won’t need to use as much and it won’t work out to be such a huge price difference. But alas, that’s not true at all. I still needed to use quite a bit of this product throughout my hair to get it to hold the way I wanted it to. So this could end up being a very, very expensive hairspray (probably around $60-$80 per month if used daily, which is just ridiculous). I love the way it styles my hair but I hate that I still need to use up so much of it to get a good hold. The old Aussie Instant Freeze formula held with less product, and it was 1/4 of the price. So, I just can’t justify buying this as my regular daily hairspray. But until I can find a cheap hairspray that works, this will have to do because it’s the only thing I’ve found that makes my hair look decent. It would be an HG product if it wasn’t for the outrageous price and I didn’t feel guilt with every spray. Ugh.
Update 08/11/10: The only real hold issue I have with this hairspray is on the ends of my hair. It holds the volume up all day just fine but it doesn’t keep hair “in place” without piling it on super thick and adding to it throughout the day. By “in place”, I mean as soon as I step into a light breeze or tilt my head down or anything, although the roots will stay lifted and volumized, I get a bunch of hair ends flying/moving about and falling forwards into my face. It just takes a lot of the spray to keep the ends in place. I like a super firm hairspray to keep the ends kind of “glued” down/back and out of my face. If I didn’t have to use so much of this spray for this reason, I could probably justify the price. I picked up 2 bottles of the Big Sexy Hair Spray & Stay (they were on sale at Chatters for $25 for a pack of two full-sized bottles), hoping that this will be enough of a stronger hold to be using a lot less product and justify the price, because I do like the formula of this hairspray otherwise. It leaves my hair very volumized and clean-looking, not as if there’s really even hairspray in it, has a nice finely misted and even spray, and also isn’t sticky so doesn’t feel gross in my hair, even in large amounts, or leave my skin and counters/floor/walls caked with sticky hairspray residue. Stay tuned for my review of the Spray & Stay, which is supposed to be the brand’s strongest hold spray. Hope it’s strong enough!

IMO, this hairspray is a little pricey, but there’s no other option for me. I’ve tried other brands, and they just don’t compare. I have super fine hair and this doesn’t weigh it down at all. My haircut requires a strong hold to keep it exactly where i put it, and this does the job PERFECTLY. No wetness, no flakiness…just perfect hold.
Sometimes the nozzle does get clogged, but I would never let that deter me from using it, and I can’t believe people are making such a big fuss about it. Get a bobby pin and loosen the dried hairspray and you’re good to go.
