This is the best volumizing powder that I have used! This holds the volume the best and the powder is finer than the others. It’s effects are long lasting and you can just re-tousle your hair throughout the day to revolumize. I have fine hair but a lot of it and it gets very flat. I use this daily on my short hair and love it!

This stuff is pretty darn good!! The powder is really fine and disappears completely once rubbed in. I sprinkle just a little (on dry hair of course) on my roots, parting them every inch or so, so that everything is covered down to my ears. I then rub it in really well with my fingers, making sure my entire root area is covered. I also place some on my fingers to do the back of my head. It adds just the right amount of volume. I use it when I ride motorcycles with my husband and I have to wear a helmet, which naturally flattens my hair something fierce. But when I take the helmet off, I just fluff my hair at the roots and immediately the volume is restored. It’s the perfect solution for “helmet head”. I was skeptical when I purchased this powder, but Sally’s was having a buy 1 get 1 free sale on Beyond the Zone products and it looked really interesting. I’ve seen reviews for other products of this type and they’ve generally been positive. I’ve had good luck with BTZ products in the past (love the Smooth Criminal primer, the hair putty and the dry shampoo) so I decided to take a chance. This powder is also excellent for absorbing excess oil, much like a dry shampoo except it’s less visible. I think the trick is to not use too much. Just a light dusting and a quick fluff is all you need. My hair is blond but my roots are a bit darker and this powder easily disappears once rubbed in. I can’t imagine more expensive products work any better. I’ll definitely keep using it. It’s a small container, but it takes so little product to do the job so it will definitely last a while. All in all, I highly recommend this product if you want volume without using a sticky, stiff spray.

I’m a big fan of texture powders for my short pixie hair. It’s thick, but the hairs are fine and soft, so it’s hard to get and volume or style. I used to use a lot of dry waxes or pomades but this is SO much better. I shake a little into my hands, mess up my hair with it, and I get perfect messy spikes. I add a little wax just to smooth everything into place and it’s perfect! It will make your hair feel textured and grippy, but I like it for that reason. A little definitely goes a long way. I have several powders I like to use and this is one of the better ones. The price is great too!

I learned the hard way – a little goes A LONG way with this! And it comes out of the shaker super fast. Too much leads to grimy greasy hair. A small amount works very well. Too much and it is like a concrete hair helmet. And it can be tough to wash out.

I have a short, alternative hairstyle that requires a ton of volume. This delivers with half the price of other brands. As chemically processed as my hair is, back combing would be sudden death. I shake a tiny bit at my roots and boom! Makes my hair look fuller with it’s matte finish. Love this! Don’t need much at all. 0.27 oz. bottle has lasted me a year.

This is a great product for volume and texture.
Volume: I find it gives me volume without having to tease.
Texture: Braided messy looking hair never looked better with this powder.
My tip…start with just a little shake. Too much will feel grimy.
Great price, as other comparable powders are at least 3 times as much.

This product is a must have for me. I bleach my hair platinum and I don’t like to back-comb it because that just adds so much more damage. That leaves me in a predicament because my hair is extremely fine and flat. I LOVE this powder because it gives a ton of lift without damaging hair at all! I found it while browsing at Sally’s a couple years ago and I have been using it ever since.
I don’t usually like to pour it directly in my hair. I sprinkle some on my fingers and rub it directly into my roots. That way I can control how much is going in my hair. A little really does go a long way so be careful not to overdo it or your hair will feel pretty disgusting.
Give this product a try! It’s awesome!!

I have dealt with a lot of fine, thin hair my entire life. Now that I am in my 50’s, I think I have found something great that I want to share, not only for my age group, but any age group. Recently I heard about styling powder. I bought “Beyond The Zone Rock On Volumizing Powder” from Sally’s last week at around $6.50 for a small container. Since I had never used this before, I wanted to start with a small amount. My hair is fine and limp, and I was afraid the powder might make my hair heavy and limper. I did not put it directly on my hair, but put about a teaspoon size in my palm and rubbed together and sort of ran it through my hair. I really did not like the way the powder made my hair feel. It felt sort of grimy. BUT I FOUND THE BEST TECHNIQUE FOR MY HAIR! I washed my hair the next day as I always do. I usually only shampoo once. Also, I do things in the reverse sometimes, and use my conditioner prior to shampoo, since that method seems to keep the hair from getting too soft. My hair felt different after rinsing the shampoo out of my hair. I blew it dry and it was amazing. Seemed like a small amount of the styling powder still remained in my hair from the day before. I’ve never had so much volume in my hair since my “perm days” in the 80’s!! There was no grimy feeling. I am sending this review in case any of you find it too gummy, heavy, or white. If you do, try putting it on prior to your shampoo and not again until the next shampoo.

I can’t believe there was only one review on this product and that it was a mediocre rating. I will start off by saying I have probably gone through about 5 “bottles” of this product over the last couple of years and a little goes a long way, so I think that is saying something. My hair is fine to average in terms of strand thickness, but stylists always say I have a lot of hair. My hair is naturally stick straight and smooth, not an ounce of texture to be seen. In general I think these types of products work best on fine and limp hair. Let’s face it, if you have thick hair, you probably already have the volume we flat haired girls are after.
Now onto the product:
It is about $6-8 at Sallys beauty supply, compared to the Big Sexy Hair powder coming in at about $15, this is a steal (and this product gives you more volume that is longer lasting- I actually gave my bottles of BSH powder away after using this product). The container is the same shake it on mini-bottle that most volumizing/texturizing powders come in. I don’t love the packaging aesthetically speaking- The grey/hunter’s orange just doesn’t do it for me. In terms of function, the packaging works perfectly fine. The powder is very fine and is white, but blends into the hair once you work it in and doesn’t leave any white cast that I’ve noticed (I have dark blonde-light brown roots). I’ve used it on my Mom’s super short hair (~2″ long at the crown) that is somewhat darker and it was invisible. This doesn’t have a smell that I’ve noticed while using it.
Application: I apply it by sprinkling it onto my roots at the crown in layers, always starting underneath about 1″ of the top layer. Apply to the areas that you want volume. Then I flip my head upside down and massage the root areas where I applied the powder. I work in the direction from base of neck up towards my forehead so as to “push up” my hair. Then I flip my hair back (you will have crazy looking big hair at this point) and use my fingers to place hair where I want it. Voila! It’s teasing without all the damage, or you can add a little tease and it will REALLY stay put. The powder does have a moist/tacky/thick stickiness that makes your hair feel dirty, but I’m pretty sure that’s also what gives it that oomph. If I find through out the day that my hair has fallen a little flat, I just go somewhere private, flip my hair over, massage it again the way I did when I put it in, and flip my hair back over. The volume comes right back.
This is an absolute must have for any type of updo- even if it’s just a ponytail. I find that hair stays looking great and elastics and bobby pins hold like super glue when you use this powder. I love using this powder on day 1 hair, then freshening up with a spray dry shampoo on day 2 and putting my hair up- great for messy yet pretty, effortless updo.

I’ve used this for about a week now. I was hoping that this would be all that and a bag of kettle cooked pickle chips. But before I give the impression that I don’t recommend this product, I think it’s more important for me to describe my hair. I have medium-thick strands, and lots of it. A LOT of volumizing products, or maybe all of the ones I’ve tried (mousse, sprays, root boosters, etc.), do not work as well as I’d like them to. This one was not an exception.
The reason why I’m giving this a 3 is because it SOMEWHAT works and it’s easy to use. Just pour a bit of powder in your fingertips, rub on the other hand, and massage it into your scalp. Or, you can pour some powder directly to your dry roots and massage it in. I saw results instantly, and it was looking impressive. Unfortunately, my hair fell flat after approximately 2 hours with both methods. I guess the thickness/density of my hair doesn’t allow it to stay volumized.
FYI: So far, the only volumizing method that works for my hair is crimping the undersides of my hair at the roots. It definitely takes up more time than applying this powder, but it lasts all day for me.
