   I bought this because it was recently reformulated and I wanted to see if all the bad reviews on Ulta were user error or not. God, I’m such a contrarian lol.

   PROS: It really does work. I use this with my NUME Octowand and it can leave my hair really smooth and the results last well without being too crazy. Also, this product says it’s supposed to leave you with a shiny finish, but it doesn’t do that for me (unless I applied too much), but I don’t mind because my hair won’t look dirty this way.

   CONS: I’m not sure if this is really consumer friendly. When I use it on myself, I find I either apply too much or just apply it too closely to my hair, and then it can be impossible to comb through and it doesn’t feel nice (it has a kind of tacky, dry-filmy/”sticky” feel), and results are harder to loosen up. I don’t see anything wrong in the way it sprays out and maybe I’m just inept, but when I did my friend’s hair with this, I had no problems at all because I could hold it further away and lay down a better layer. Also, the product says that you can apply it after for additional style memory and shine. I wouldn’t do that; it resaturates the hair and can start looking dirty.

   OTHER: This was reformulated in late 2017 I think, with coconut oil and beeswax. It’s pretty obvious what they are doing with the formula – they have taken out alcohol and alcohol denat like most heat protection sprays have, so it doesn’t have a drying nature by design (the trade-off is the texture is no longer as light). This is a now a thicker spray and you need to shake it before each use. Some of the negative Ulta reviews mention how it won’t spray but I think they just aren’t shaking it. Strangely enough, it says to shake well before use in ALL CAPS AND BOLD on the back, but it’s placed in the upper left corner, enough to be casually glazed over it. They should move the text. Also, Redken has a lot of memorable scents, but they usually are not light and can tend to smell “chemical” (my friend says this one smells like dandelions).

   OVERALL: I feel like if I were a stylist, I would like this product more. It does work, but I find I’m heavy handed with it because I really want to avoid heat damage and then the hold level is a liability. I’m going to try Joico Ironclad 01 next time. It has 01 hold level, so even if I apply extra, I won’t be penalized so much.

   UPDATE: I don’t hate this as much as I originally did. I’m bumping it up to 3. I may just repurchase this for the amount you get compared to other salon heat stylers.

   This use to be my FAVORITE. I could curl my hair and go for days without even re-touching curls. Now, since it is re-vamped, it is awful. Barely will spray through the nozzle. Makes my hair feel dirty and dull, takes longer to dry once I spray on to the strands and curl…Used it today and my hair will look like crap in the morning. It was PERFECT the way it was….

   I will be trying to find another product to use. I hope NOT to buy again.

   This was my go-to product since my hairdresser used it in my thick hair. It was pleasant to smell, sprayed easily, and left a nice shine. However, I went to repurchase and they’ve reformulated it and (according to the rep) added beeswax. It is HORRIBLE. It smells like cheap perfume, it made my hair thicker and heavier, it covered my hands in a sticky coating, and my hair looked like I had not sprayed any protection at all; dull, thick, heavy. I immediately exchanged it at my local, and am now super happy with a different brand. What were they thinking??

   I have fine, thin color-treated hair and have been using IronShape 11 for a little over six months. Up until recently, I loved it. It provided heat protection, but it also gave my hair some volume and control without weighing it down. Recently, I went to re-purchase and found that they had reformulated this product and the new version is TERRIBLE for my hair type. It weighs it down and almost makes it feel dirty. I was able to return it to the store and find a few bottles of the old stuff, but as soon as I run out, I’ll be looking for a new product. (NOTE: if you’re looking for the old formula, it had a MUCH SHORTER ingredient list and was $2 cheaper. There must be a few bottles still out there somewhere!)

   I use this everyday it works like a charm my hair is super strait with tons of fly aways I just spray it and comb it and go out I totally recommend it

   I bought this product hoping to find a dupe for Living Proof No Frizz styling spray, which is really expensive but awesome. I needed something with significant hold (my hair is resistant) but that would leave my hair soft with natural movement not stiff or crunchy. Iron Shape is a setting spray designed to be used with heated styling tools and it also provides thermal protection and adds shine. The critical question is: can it hold my waves all day and into the next? Living Proof definitely does this so any dupe would have to work just as well. I can say that Iron Shape is the closest dupe I’ve found so far (I’ve been searching for quite a while) and it seems to be just what I’ve been looking for. I use it on clean damp hair after using Bumble and Bumble Invisible Oil Primer (which does provide thermal protection but also eliminates frizz). I spray Iron Shape liberally all over and then I let my hair air dry overnight. In the morning I use a curling iron to create loose waves that I then brush through only once before applying a flexible hold hairspray (Got2b Mindblowing h/s and Carol’s Daughter Monoi h/s are excellent). Iron Shape did define the curls and did make them smooth and shiny. I was also able to easily brush through the curls, which did keep their shape and definition. But the true test of Iron Shape is whether or not the waves last all day in the Florida humidity. Granted, it’s wintertime here now so the humidity is pretty low, all things considered. However, my curls did last all day and were fine for a 2nd day, with no recurling necessary. On the 3rd day, I applied a little more Iron Shape and proceeded to recurl and it worked just as well as it did on the first day. I did consider buying Hot Sets 22 but figured it probably had too much hold and that I would likely not get the nice natural movement I wanted. Iron Shape has plenty of hold for my hard to hold hair and the waves kept their shape throughout the day and beyond. And this makes me really happy!! Living Proof No Frizz spray is $36 for 6.7 ounces and Iron Shape is $17 for 8 ounces (however, I did have a $5 Ulta coupon), so this is a very good thing. I’ve tested a lot of products trying to find something that could compare to LP because, let’s face it, hair products are expensive and anything that can save me some hard earned cash makes me a happy camper. Granted, this product is not a drugstore dupe, which would have been ideal. I know of no drugstore thermal setting spray and everything I’ve tried thus far has been far short of the mark. But Iron Shape is very close to LP. It’s certainly not very heavy and I’m currently experimenting with the amount I use so that I get the longest lasting curls. I can spray LP up the ying yang and my hair will still feel like there’s no product in it at all, and I love that. Iron Shape is a bit heavier but it still doesn’t weigh my hair down at all so it would be a good choice for fine hair. My main objective in using this product was the holding power and that seems to be quite good. The thermal protection and shine factor are just added bonuses. All in all, I’m quite liking this product and although I’ll always be loyal to my beloved LP spray, it’s nice to have something that works almost as well that’s less costly. Sometime in the future, money could be tight, you never know. And Iron Shape is half the price of LP. What could be better than that? I definitely recommend this setting spray.
