I’ve been using Brilliant on and off for a couple of years. I have thick fine textured coloured hair that is never shiny. I like a bit of shine because otherwise my hair seems unhealthy looking; just your typical dry dyed blonde hair with a bit of frizz. The main thing with this product is not to use much at first. You have to gauge how much is right for your hair – too much and your hair is greasy, too little and it does nothing. I have medium length hair and use less than a dime size on dry hair. I apply it to the hair only avoiding the scalp.It makes my hair shiny and a bit softened. Too much and my hair quickly becomes limp.My main dislike of this product is the smell of it. A heavy spicy perfumey scent that I really dislike. Strange since Aveda products claim to be kind of organic and natural. The scent lingers all day too. I sometimes wonder if other people can smell it on my hair and go eww. Second, like all Aveda it’s over priced. No one can tell me that these products are worth the high cost given the small amount of of ingredients. My dad is a chemist and he looks at the ingredient list and laughs. He says they are worth maybe five dollars.

This is a great styling cream, one of the few that doesn’t weigh my hair down. I apply a very small amount to my hair when it’s wet before I use the Confixor gel to help avoid the crunch when I air dry. It smells wonderful and makes my hair very soft/shiny. It contains aloe, meadowfoam seed oil, and jojoba oil so it moisturizes my dry ends as well. It’s $18 for 5 oz. but with the amount that I use, a tube could easily last a year.

I like this cream for my fine (but thick) wavy hair. It’s not heavy on silicones so I don’t have to worry about build up but it still has enough plus natural ingredients to get rid of frizz. It definitely adds shine which my bleached hair desperately needs. It prevents my hair from getting too frizzy in humid Florida weather as well. Some things I think could be better – it weighs down my waves just a little bit although that is an understandable compromise when you want moisture. It enhances them but prevents my hair from getting big and fluffy – the result is nice though sometimes I’d like more volume. It works better for me on dry hair as I feel like it defines and adds more texture like its meant to, whereas on wet hair it just keeps it weighed down. I actually don’t mind the smell but I tend to like more “natural” scented products anyway. Overall I would probably buy this again because I like the moisture and frizz prevention without a lot of silicones. It’s similar to Alterna’s Silk Sleek Brilliance Cream or Fekkai Glossing Cream but without the exorbitant amount of silicones.

I just realized that I have used this product on and off for 10 years- I think it deserves a revue. I have fairly dry course hair that is a but wavey. After air drying, I sometimes apply a 2 pea sized amount to the roots of my second day hair to add some moisture back into the ends and keep my hair smooth. I use some in my hair before I use a straightening iron. I feel that the extra moisture make the straightening a bit easier and leaves my hair feeling smooth. I love the smell- quintessential aveda scent I cant get enough of.

after i figured out how to use this, i really liked it. at first, i only used a tiny bit b/c i was afraid of weighing down my hair, but that didn’t make a difference. now i use about a quarter size on my chin length hair, which seems just right. this cream doesn’t provide stiff hold, so not good for more dramatic styles, but it’s great for every day professional hair w/definition. it feels sticky on my hands + a little on my hair, but i think that’s what provides the definition. i don’t mind the smell; it’s typical aveda herbal smell.

If one could get past the extremely spicy, masculine fragrance (think old spice) this product might work well. I have very thick/ coarse 3c hair that almost reaches my waist. The amount of product I needed to use on my hair made the scent unbearable. It does make hair shiny but in my case this is not enough to outweigh the annoying fragrance.

I’ve been using this product off-and-on since 2003. Like most leave-in hair products, I have a love/hate relationship with this cream. I have medium hair and lots of it, so this cream is suited to me, but if I use even just a bit too much my hair ends up looking oily and dirty. Less is definitely more, as other reviewers have pointed out – otherwise, this can be a very heavy product.
What I do love about it is how shiny it makes my hair look! I apply it very sparingly to dry hair and give my hair a few passes with my Aveda paddle brush, and that seems to help distribute it nicely. The result is glossy hair with no fly-aways! I also apply it to damp hair, then wrap my hair into a tight, high-set bun and let it air dry…when I later let the bun down, my hair has a beautiful wavy texture, like I just came from the beach, and very shiny.
I’ve cheated on this product with TIGI Bed Head After-Party, but I give the edge to Aveda’s cream. It’s less greasy and doesn’t feel filmy on my hair. It keeps the frizzies away, and feels moisturizing. I’ve had my current tube for YEARS (2+, I’m thinking?) so it’s safe to say that this is economical. Recommend!

I got this in a swap (thanks MUAer eco751!) and I really do like it so far! I only use this when I’m flat ironing my hair, because it weighs down my borderline curly hair and gives it pretty much no life whatsoever. However, when I use this and straighten my hair, I’m left with a ton of shine and I can actually run my fingers through it! And contrary to what everyone else is saying on here, I love the smell! It’s very herbal smelling and I think it smells great! And it is a very heavy cream, so I only use a pea size amount like the bottle says ^^

I fried my hair with a series of bad dye jobs and bleaching…this is the only thing that has penetrated the frizz to smooth out my ends and make my hair normal again. A little goes a long way and you have to build it up slowly to make sure you don’t over do it. If your hair is dry and puffy, this is gives the ‘weight’ you’re looking for. I love love love the smell. It actually does EXACTLY what it says on the tube: defines, moisturizes, and adds shine.

Its very moisturizing and gives my hair a great sheen when I style my hair in braid-outs and twist-outs. My problem is the smell which is very heady and masculine. I will not be repurchasing for that reason alone.
