I have fine shoulder length hair and always looking for a product that gives my hair a bit more volume and texture, without making my scalp itch or making my hair too oily of too dry. I do not like styling products in general, I hate the dirty, stiff or sticky feeling of them in my fine hair.
This gel is quite different. It doesn’t have that typical feel of a styling product. It is very light and fresh. It gives my hair a bit more texture and grip. After applying on my wet hair and after my hair is dry I have to brush it, because the gel makes my hair a bit stiff (of the aloe vera), but after that it feels very nice.
No real volume, but that is normal, because there are no chemical forming ingredients in the gel (polymers). Yes, I do like it.

Maybe I need to use a lot more than I think I need to, but I just don’t get enough hold for my 3b curls. They do feel clean and moisturized, but as the day progresses, the hold and definition quickly deteriorates.

I absolutely LOVE this!!! I have tried almost every hair product out there and I truly think this is the best (or at least in the top three). I love Aubrey Organics because their stuff is all-natural and makes my hair feel healthy and strong. This is no exception.
The consistency is a little abnormal for a gel (but if you’ve used Aubrey products before, you won’t really be surprised). It’s not liquidy, but it’s a little more fluid-like than your average gel (which is fine). The texture is different too – it is not sticky, but rather silky. It feels almost like a serum, but a little bit drier/not oily. At first it doesn’t feel like it will be moisturizing, but after a couple of days, my hair was so much more moisturized than I ever thought it could be. I never thought I would find a product that had a good protein-to-moisture ratio. THIS IS IT. It makes my hair feel strong, but not so built up with protein that it feels hard. Strong and soft, and ABSOLUTELY NO FRIZZ. This fights frizz better than Frizz-Ease and everything like it.
I do wish that this product was better at enhancing curl (but I won’t take off points for it, because it doesn’t claim to) Oddly enough, it makes my curly hair look a lot straighter and I’m not sure why. But it doesn’t feel “weighed down,” it still has volume and bounce. It’s weird. But it’s nice. I like to spray rosewater on my hair after applying this product — for some reason, that helps kick the curl back into it and makes it feel even softer.
Also, it smells like lavender, which is really nice and soothing. The packaging is great because even though it’s not attractive, it’s simple and I respect that. It’s easy to use, and they definitely give you a lot for your money. The product lasts a long time – before buying a large bottle, I got a 2 oz sample bottle. Even though I have the large bottle ready and waiting in my bathroom, I’m still on my 2 oz bottle which has lasted me a month already! (I apply it after washing my hair, which is every other day. I only need a dime-sized amount to cover all of my hair… which is thick, curly, and down to my waist!)
This will make your hair feel clean and soft with no frizz… which, I think, makes it the perfect hair product.

This is the best styling product I have ever used, and I have tried every one. This is my HG! Have been using for two months now on my very blonde (colored) past shoulders, medium thick, fine, frizzy, wavy hair. I have NEVER been able to just air dry my hair and have it look good. I usually put in three or four products, including silicones and gels to keep it smooth and under control, comb them in and sleep in a tight ponytail. I always have a dent in the am, but that’s what I live with. Now, with this gel, I need NOTHING else. I wash and condition with Aubrey Honeysuckle Rose, leave a little of the conditioner on my ends in shower without rinsing, then use this gel. It smells wonderful and slightly masculine, but the smell fades when hair dries. I comb my hair and voila, it dries gorgeously. It truly is a miracle for me. No flakiness at all. I wonder if people are shaking bottle before using? I haven’t experienced any type of stiffness of flakiness at all. Love this stuff! Makes my hair: smooth, full, wavy, controlled, bouncy, soft and shiny. Incredible.

Original intention: not actually as a styling/design gel, but to use mainly for frizz control and wave enhancement (two sides of the same coin), exactly as I was using Phytodéfrisant. B-5 works, on my hair, almost as well. Can be used right down to the roots: neither drying nor greasifying. It also has detangling and moisturising qualities, good conditioning at the hair ends–they actually look healthier, like in everyone’s marketing claims–some bodifying, and leaves hair smooth, shiny, and beautifully soft. Think classic Timotei adverts, running through spring meadows while swooshing hair around, all in soft focus. Waking up with that fresh-washed bouncy feeling the day *after* you’ve washed your hair–and the next too.
Hair here, for reference: fine, thick/dense, bra-strap length, slightly wavy. Hair normal-dry, washed every 2-3 days, untreated in any way, and left to air-dry naturally. Not by serious decision, I do have a hairdryer but in the daily battle for early morning priorities, 99 times out of 100 it loses out to coffee.
Dry scalp, normal-dry skin, needs care with products as sensitive i.e. fragile and irritable skin, plus occasional eczema. B-5 fine: no irritation, no tell-tale breakouts on upper back, and no triggering or exacerbation of eczema.
The B-5’s texture is somewhere between liquid and gel; needs to be well shaken before use to mix up the water, aloe vera, and gum. Same scent as the GPB conditioner–if you love it, worth knowing; hate it, ditto. Aside from the gloopy gellid base, main useful ingredients would be the panthenol, biotin, and above all the horsetail (acting somewhat like silicones do). I use about 3 quarter-sized splodges, on long hair.
Application: wash hair, towel dry, then apply this stuff. I use two blobs, one for ends and underside of hair, the second distributed approximately all over. Run hands through hair gently–the B-5 helps a lot with manageability–comb through, then leave hair to dry (and attend to coffee). I’ve had no issues with white flakes or crunchiness.
Packaging: 3 lippies, and that’s being nice. Recyclable plastic slightly squeezable bottle, flip-top cap. Fine and usable, well worth 4.5 lippies, though I’d prefer a fully squeezy tube. But Aubrey, Aubrey, when are you going to hire someone do something about labels, a.k.a. heinous crimes against design, style, and heck any kind of aesthetics? There’s a line between retro and ugly, and that line was crossed so long ago that it’s barely visible over the horizon. Weleda look quite cool and chic in comparison.
Other cons (may just be me):
(1) I use a lot more of this than I did with Phytodéfrisant, using it up faster. Also, it started to go off before I had finished the bottle, thus losing about 20%. Someone with shorter hair using less of it would find a bottle lasted longer, but then again, if it started going off after the same length of time after opening, they might well lose a higher %age of product.
(2) Hair dries more slowly with this than with Phytodéfrisant.
(3) Can’t use B-5 on every wash, a break is needed (mabe every couple of weeks?). Hair started to dry out and frizz again at the ends; might be protein excess. I experimented with a return to Phytodéfrisant: all well.
Cruelty-free and vegan. Contains various organic ingredients, worth knowing in case that’s important to you.* Costs around CAD12-15 for 237 ml.
Phytodéfrisant, for comparison: pretty “green” too, and not a case of greenwashing or bandwagon-jumping, cruelty-free, sustainable production, recycling, decent ethical practices. One minus: CAD27-33 for 150 ml. Pluses: fragrance-free, less is needed so tube lasts longer, lasts for at least 2 years before going off (tried and tested), and available in different sizes of tub, including a good trial/travel mini. Minus: that mini is about the same price as a full bottle of B-5.

* I’m easy on this issue. But I’m not allergic to plastics, toxins, chemicals, science, people in lab coats, pragmatism, empiricism, scepticism, reason, research, and good old-fashioned Common Sense. Given that I have what I’d consider more serious and immediate allergies to worry about. Though there’s some intersection and common ground as I often happen to choose, as with the B-5, the same products for other environmental and ethical reasons.

I like! all natural, no plasticizers or harmful chemicals. Very nice hold. Conditioning. If you use too much and then touch your hair a lot it starts to flake and turn white though and if you put a lot then if feels crunchy if you use less then its more soft.

This gel works great with the Aubrey Organics Mandarin Moisturizing Jelly. I wish I could take every other product out of my cabinet and return them! I use very little of these two products together. I start with the AOMM and then use the B5 gel. My hair is so shiny and soft that I cannot believe it – and best of all- all natural and no cones!

First of all, I generally dislike hair gels. They remind me of the sticky, stiff, dry mess my hair was when I was in my early teens. I used to be addicted to that stuff. But… when I received a free sample of this B5 design gel, I thought I’d give it a try. Well, let me tell you, this product is far from the typical sticky gels from my past. It doesn’t leave hair stiff, but soft and shiny with light-to-medium hold. It is silicone free and feels light like a feather, there is no heaviness at all. It is vegan friendly and aloe vera based with some other natural ingredients. My hair tends to frizz, and this is just strong enough to make it behave. I usually apply it to dry hair, but it works in damp hair too. If you want a more natural, light hold hair gel, then this is definitely worth testing.

I like this gel. I use it as a part of my regimen with the CG method, and it really helps to keep my hair moisturized when I decide to use gel for frequent use. I typically use aloe vera gel, which leaves my hair very soft. Sometimes, I want extra hold, and that is when I use this. For the purposes of wet bunning and sleek ponytails, it works well. I have not used it for scrunching curls, so can’t speak to that. No problems with the smell, and no experience with flaking. And I have dark colored hair. I will definitely repurchase because I love the ingredients, and the finish is good considering it isnt filled with silicones and other things I dont care for in products anymore.

My husband and I both used this product. I used it to seal the ends of my hair to reduce frizz and he used it to style his spiky-ish hair. For my hair, it didn’t do much — the ends still seemed a bit frazzled, but I presume that was more from the drying effects of the Aubrey shampoo than this product. My husband loved this product at first but then began to notice that his hair and scalp become much oiler than usual. He also experienced itching and flaky due to the excess oil build-up. Even after switching shampoos and continued use of this product, the oily residue and flakes continued.
