Normally I just read things on MakeupAlley. I’m a very passive, go with the flow person, but I decided to add this product to MakeupAlley because I can’t believe it wasn’t added already with a ton of positive reviews following it.
Most hairsprays these days contain an overabundance of chemicals that are harmful such as fragrances, or endocrine disrupting ingredients (those mess with your hormone levels), or ingredients that are known to lead to cancer. Then there are the overly natural ones that contain like two ingredients like water and sugar, or water and sea salt which don’t provide any real hold and leave the hair feeling sticky.
It’s difficult nowadays to find a happy medium between the two extremes, but medium hold hair spray by Alba Botanica has the following ingredients:
SD Alcohol 40-B, Aqua (Water), Acrylates/C1-2 Succinates/Hydroxyacrylates Copolymer, Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein, Panthenol, Camellia Sinensis Leaf Extract (1), Chamomilla Recutita (Matricaria) Flower Extract (1), Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice (1), Lavandula Angustifolia (Lavender) Extract (1), Rosmarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) Flower Extract (1), Moringa Pterygosperma Seed Extract, Aminomethyl Propanol, Glycerin, PVP (1) Certified Organic Ingredient
Note the 2nd ingredient. A copolymer, and the ingredient called “PVP”. Another polymer. These polymers are the main ingredients used in modern day hairsprays. They’re the ones responsible for providing a good hold to our hair, and although they are synthetic and not natural, they’re some of the more mildly- hazardous hair holding ingredients found in today’s hairsprays.
“SD ALCOHOL 40B” and “AMINOMETHYL PROPANOL” are really the only two negative ingredients on the ENTIRE LIST.
Not bad overall when compared to 99% of other hairsprays on the market.
Look at the score Environmental Working Group gave it:
That’s right. A score of 3: Low-moderate hazard. Pretty good for a hairspray that actually holds. Now compare that to hairsprays you’ve used. Search your hairspray on EWG’s website and compare the ingredients hazard levels.
Sure maybe it’s not in an aerosol can, but it makes me wonder why this product isn’t given more praise.
