I’ve had acne-prone, congested skin since my teens. When my doctor put me on birth control in my 20s my skin basically cleared up. However, as I got older my skin kept getting cystic breakouts on my chin and neck. I kept changing pills every so often which would temporarily fix the problem but I was tired of changing pills. I tried drugstore and high-end products to combat the problem. Nothing worked. I remember using Proactiv back when I was a teen with ok but not profound results. I was pretty desperate at that point, so I ordered the 3-Step System. The Proactiv+ was different than the old system I used as a teen, but I still didn’t have high hopes. I recieved the kit on a Friday and started using it that night. By Sunday morning, my skin had drastically improved. I remember this because my husband and I were going to spend the day together going to the movies and restaurants and I didn’t particularly want to leave the house because of my skin. But it had cleared up enough that I was more comfortable going out and with continued use my acne cleared up altogether. I do not use the system every day, as it will dry out your skin and the older I get the more focused I need to be on dehydration, hyperpigmentation and wrinkles. So I cycle this with my other products, using it when I feel like I need more attention to preventing breakouts. I get the automatic shipments, and felt like I was getting it too often for my needs so I changed the frequency, which is easy to do on the website. I will also say that the 3rd step, the complexion hydrator is not enough to hydrate my skin so I use it more like a treatment (since it has salicylic acid) and then use a moisturizer I like. Also, if you’re using this system with products that contain vitamin c, be sure NOT to use both products at the same time as vitamin c and benzoyl peroxide will cancel each other out (one is an oxidizer and the other an anti-oxidant). I completely understand how this product might not work for most but I was thankful it worked for me.

I’ve seen a lot of mixed reviews so I’ll try and be as in depth as possible to figure out if it’s right for you.
I have had pretty bad skin since I was about 12, not terrible acne but I would get 1-5 new breakouts a day (some just pimples, occasionally cystic acne) and god help me around that time of month. In addition sensitive, combination skin with redness and dry patches I was in hell and now at 21 have tried just about every product possible. My next step was a dermatologist.
I bit the bullet after my partner told me it was worth a shot to try proactive (much cheaper than a dermatologist) and with a money back guarantee it was pretty risk free.
I tried the new system, with the skin smoothing exfoliator, pore targeting solution, and complexion perfecting hydrator. It came with maright fading pads and the eye brightening serum as well. I cannot stress enough the importance of a patch test (neither can proactive, it’s on literally every instruction manual about 3 times!)
The skin smoothing exfoliator is a good first step, but can be harsh the first few times its used. I got some redness after the patch test which disappeared after about 4 hours, and proceeded with caution. It did give me a red face the first 3-4 days so go a bit easy if you have sensitive skin (try rubbing for 1 -2 minutes instead of suggested 3-4) after the initial getting used to it, my skin does not react at all, it’s like any other cleanser/exfoliator. It definitely improves my skins texture (all smooth now yay!) And does a great job cleaning away day to day oil and dirt.
The pore targeting solution is my favourite by far. Though it’s part of the system so I can’t credit one or the other for improvement in my skin this feels the best on my face, very soothing and smooth, and I have noticed a dramatic reduction in my pores size, and of black and whiteheads which usually plague my nose and chin. Again though, PATCH TEST PATCH TEST PATCH TEST. It can be drying so starthat at once a day and go up to twice if you feel it’s necessary!
The complexion perfecting hydrator is a bit odd, but still great. When I first used it i was hesitant as it feels a bit “sticky” going on but once it’s settled in my skin feels, well, perfect. On a regular day I apply once and leave it at that, but if I feel a bit dry I use another bit after the first is absorbed and all is good. You can add the proactive moisturiser after this but I rarely find I need it, I usually use it only if I’ll be in the sun as its got an spf rating.
The eye brightening serum was a “free gift” and personally I wouldn’t purchase it separately, it does a good job moisturising my under eyes but I haven’t noticed much if any difference to my eye area. It’s fine if you just need a bit of moisture there but if it’s a problem area I’d find another more specific product to help out.
The mark fading pads are a great addition to the kit, I’ve seen a reduction in some of my lessay aggressive scars. I use them predominately in the days after I do a face mask ( I use Indian clay, which used to result in a few days of breakouts while my skin purged, but with these I get nothing except good skin, super yay!)
I know it’s been a long review, but if you’ve stuck through it so far I personally would recommend proactive 🙂 its not a miracle fix! I can’t stress that enough, it may be for some people, (lucky ad people) but what it’s done for me is 110% wOrth the money. I’ve gone from regular pimples and breakouts to maybe 1 a week, and my skin is just in general much clearer and smoother. I can confidently leave the house without makeup to cover up. I can’t say it would work for everyone but you have to stick with it for at least 4-6 weeks, being diligent with applying everything. After that stage I’ve been able to skip (read totally forget, or be toon rushed) to use it some nights and mornings without my skin flaring back up, which is awesome.

made my acne sooooooo much worse. actually, as soon as i stopped using it my acne got better. don’t waste money on this. neutrogena grapefruit face wash is a miracle worker and it’s sooo cheap. haven’t had a breakout for months after using the grapefruit wash.

I really love the original Proactiv System, which I’ve gone back to using. It’s less expensive and really clears my skin. The newer Proactiv Plus System, on the other hand, left me oily and clogged my pores. The only part that I really liked was the Pore Targeting Treatment. It seemed a little more gentle than the Repairing Treatment in the original kit. So, I might buy that one item in the future. But overall, Proactiv Plus was a bust.

Ok so before purchasing I google ld the reviews and all I saw was negative comments about this product. I have suffered from acne all of my life since I was 13 and I’ve tried every over the counter product to natural remedies to special oils to get rid of acne and nothing ever worked…until my boyfriend convinced me to try the new proactiv + line so when I was finally fed up with my face I gave it a try. shipping was fairly quick and I promise you the first night using it I already saw a difference in my face! It’s going on day 5 and my skin looks better already! So please everyone don’t go by what most people say! I do have a tip for those that want to try it to use very little of the product! If you use too much it will dry you out! Just a little bit goes a long way! If your oily try not to use the toner bc it tends to make me more oily other then that its awesome!

Acne treatment is good except for the fact that once you use it will go away for a couple of days then come back because they want your money and the product bleaches your skin as well.. Not much dryness but its definitely a lot of money, People dont realize but it will be like 80 for a month after your first package that was 30 dollars or so and it will ad up to hundreds of dollars a year which is terrible, i suggests going to the dermatologist and buying a cream like tazorac or tretinoin if you really want to take care of it and it is believe it or not cheaper than pro activ

I have not even used this product yet because it is a bitch to even receive. You would think since Proactiv has been around for awhile they’d have their shit together.
When it comes to shipping… the website says $9.99 for overnight shipping but when I called their customer care today she said “oh it must be an error, it is ‘rush 2 day’ shipping.” Well that is not what your website says. She did offer to refund me the shipping but at this point I don’t even want the Proactiv!! They won’t even send me a tracking number. She said if I return it they will refund me but I have to pay for the shipping… I should have just gotten the AcneFree system at Target or bought Proactiv at the mall.

Aged my skin horribly! It did dry up acne, but no faster than the old version. After 3 days of use, my skin looked thinner with tiny wrinkles all over – like I’d left an egg white mask on my skin, smiled a lot, and didn’t rinse it off. Awful. Scary. Like an 80 year old – no offense to any 80 year olds.
Love the old Pro Activ, (which they still make) – used on & off for 10+ years as needed, when I broke out or needed more oil control. I’ll go back to that system.
New Pro Activ has salicylic acid which usually breaks me out. Didn’t this time.
Packaging is excessive and bulky. Smells like the Green Tea Moisturizer – light and fresh. Step 3 is a super heavy cream that feels like car oil.
I suggest using steps 2 & 3 ONLY where you have breakouts. The cleanser is kind of nice – exfoliating, but again, excessively drying.

I apologize in advance for the length of this review, but I want to ensure the readers out there looking for details thoughts on the Proactiv+ system get it. I’ll be breaking down my review by product, as well as purchasing.
*Online Ordering: I purchased my first 30-days of the 3-step program on getproactiv.ca, as I’m a Canadian resident. It took exactly one week for the package to be delivered to my doorstep; however, they do not provide you with shipment notifications, tracking numbers, or an account number. They also do not respond to emails via their “Contact Us” section. For all of those reasons, they get a MAJOR thumbs down. Please note that by purchasing online, you automatically enroll to receive products every 3 months.
*Step(1) Skin Smoothing Exfoliator: I liked this product, but it does smell a LOT like cheap bar soap. The consistency is creamy, and it doesn’t really foam. The exfoliating beads are gentle, but you can feel them working. This feels less abrasive than the original Proactiv Step 1, but still leaves my face feeling clean… not squeaky clean, but rather soft.
*Step (2) Pore Targeting Solution: I’m not sure how I feel about this… I like that I can just rub this into my face, rather than the original Proactiv Step 2 Toner, where I was often too lazy to use because I needed to find cotton pads. This feels smooth, no burning, and not sticky. I like it because it’s quicker than the original.
*Step (3) Complexion Perfecting Hydrator: FINALLY! Finally Proactiv acknowledges that we still need to moisturize! The solution of this formula, once dried, makes skin feel like silk. My ONLY complaint about this product is that it does not have SPF… which means, if you’re like me and wear SPF religiously every day, you have to add ANOTHER layer onto your face. That’s not to say I feel like my skin is covered in product, but it is now a 4-step routine.
**BONUS: Mark Correcting Pads: these little suckers are awesome! I received a 5pk bonus. As per the instruction, you are to apply this wipe on clean skin (between steps 1 and 2) for 5-days in a row, once a month. LADIES! Does this not scream “I’m made for hormonal breakouts”???? I’m loving this right now, because that’s exactly what I have. And THIS gives me that squeaky, deep clean feeling I’m looking for, without any burning. I use this only in the evening.
**BONUS: Eye Brightening Serum: it’s took early for me to give an accurate review on how this serum works in terms of the appearance of fine lines or under eye dark circles. That said, it is very smooth to apply, no tugging and I didn’t experience any burning, which can happen when some eye creams migrate towards your eye. So far, I’m cautiously optimistic.
**BONUS: Re-Texturizing Toner: Remember how I said earlier that I hated the original Proactiv’s Step 2 toner because you needed to find cotton pads? This sample came with the pads!! They were very similar to the material used in “Oxy” pads (not sure if that’s even still around – I’m old). I use this toner in the morning after Step 1, before Step 2. I feel like it really wakes my skin up, and preps it for the pore targeting solution.
I realize I haven’t used Proactiv+ to give a thorough review on it’s benefits, but for now, I really like the packaging (no more screw caps – all snap lids and pumps) and the feel of the products on my skin. I hope to be back in a month to re-review the effects on my skin.
Til then… xo

I loved the old proactiv three step system and used it for years. It kept my skin so clear and smooth. I have very large, deep pores on my T-zone, and they require DAILY exfoliation. Otherwise the oil literally hardens and turns to little balls in my pores. I started the new proactiv plus system over a month ago, and my skin looks awful. Initially my acne came roaring with a vengeance and took over my chin and forehead, then it stayed for weeks. The same zits wouldn’t budge, they just got humongous and sat for weeks. I never picked at them. Then they eventually dried up, but now there are dark purple crater-like scars left behind. My skin is very red, oily, and almost looks thinner, like I’ve aged 10 years. The suppleness that the old system provided is gone. Forget about the moisturizer. It’s like crisco mixed with paint thinner. It’s way too harsh and greasy. And it’s all so expensive compared to the old system. I left a review on the proactiv website, but they didn’t post it, which I take to mean they filter out the not so great reviews. If the product works for you, more power to you. But my skin hated it. I’m on the hunt for something else that works.
