This might be my new favorite oil.
I can only comment anecdotally, as I am not familiar enough with the profiles of individual oils to confidently break down their benefits. But I guess user reviews are anecdotal, so WTH.
I was initially concerned this oil would be heavy and dry skin-ideal based on name alone, but it turns out I was mistaken. This oil features a balance of omega 3 (gamma-linolenic), 6 (lineoleic), and 9 (oleic) fatty acids that strikes me as suitable for most skin types.
Firstly: I have generally unproblematic skin—mostly normal, sometimes dehydrated if I’m careless. This oil works beautifully for me. I use it most often at night, either under, over, or in my night cream or mask, depending on consistency. I tend to go heavier on oils—think 4–5 drops vs. 2–3—which works fine with this product given its weight. I prefer finishing products that feel substantial and even have a “bouncy” finish, but I cannot stand oils that sit on the skin and never absorb. This one doesn’t have that issue. It isn’t too slick or sticky and never makes me worry about putting my face on my pillow at night (even if I worry about that for other reasons). It’s light enough to wear during the day—though this may not be true for everyone—without causing any issues with makeup application or creating excess shine (though this is not typically an issue for me). It has no added fragrance, dye, or discernible scent. (The INCI list does contain turmeric root and chlorophyllin-copper, which can be used for fragrance and coloring, but both are cited for antioxidant benefit in Lancer’s description and are near the end of the ingredients.)
In terms of oils, Omega Hydrating Oil’s highest concentration is in grape seed oil. Grape seed oil is omega-6-rich and friendly to oilier skin types. It also contains omega-3-heavy linseed (flax) oil. These polyunsaturated oils help maintain barrier health, regulate water retention in the skin (because even oily skin needs hydration), and regulate oil production. Win x 3. OHO also contains jojoba and sunflower oils, which are more balanced in omega-6s and omega-9s, and lower concentrations of omega-9 (aka monounsaturated) olive and argan oil. Omega-9s are especially beneficial for dry skin, but their comparative concentration helps keep things friendly for non-dry users. The typically lower viscosity of omega-3/6 oils and the addition of various ferments and esters give this product its pleasant, absorbable texture, antioxidant power, brightening abilities, absorbability, and wide applicability. I have at least one oil-prone friend who loves it. If you happen to get your hands on it but just can’t do oils due to the look—I called it absorbable, not mattifying!—it might be worth a shot at night, though I imagine most people from combo to dry will find it daytime-usable.
While not an inexpensive product, I do find the Lancer oil in line price-wise with comparable oils. The only negative I see is the clear glass bottle, which could use some light proofing. (Note: probably a no-go if dealing with fungal acne, where ferments and fatty acids are a poor idea.)
