I could not find any reviews for this new product or product line that has sprung out of the Colourpop family, but if this product is categorised in a different way or should be. (It’s a bit unclear if the SOL products should be considered its own brand or a line within Colourpop). If so the MakeupAlley team have my blessing to remove or move this review to its rightful place!!
For those of you not already aware, Colourpop has begun venturing into the skincare and body care areas under brand or line names like Fourth Ray and for this case SOL who are focusing on body care and came out with first four “shimmering dry oils” and shortly after four “glow oils”. This review is for the shimmering dry oils.
They come in four different tones, platinum, soft gold, warm gold and bronze supposedly catering to different skin tones? You can by them separately or as a bundle with all four and in constellations of one together with a matching glow oil, (at least at the time for this review. They retail for 15$ each or 50$ for the bundle which in comparison to many similar glowgiving products on the market this summer is quite a fair price in my opinion.
What about the product then. It has a base made up of common chemical humectants mixed with almond oil spiced with a bit of Argan oil and coconut oil which makes the oil shiny and glossy upon application but will then dry down a bit making it less glossy.
The shimmering part consists of a blend of differently coloured glitters in different sizes.
Some of the oils have more glitters than others but apart from that the oils are really not that different from each other. The oils when spread out in the skin differ more in how the different sizes and colours of the glitters reflect light. The oils don’t leave much if any colour to the skin.
They do however give quite a bit of an impact and especially if used for photographs or on the beach they are beautifully sparkly and fun. For any type of wear where clothes are involved transfer will be an issue and also the shiny ness of the product will diminish as the oil blend dries down leaving just the glitters which does not look as stunning as these oils can look right after application.
For people who don’t like glitter in shimmering or highlighting products this will not be an option since the glitters in these products are quite impactful, some of them more than the others but non of them subtle.
Application is done best with a brush just as the brand suggests, offering a kabuki styled body brush that you can buy separately or that comes with the bundle, (or at least did with mine). It’s an ok soft flat kabuki styled synthetic brush that distributes the shimmers fairly evenly on the skin. I have used it also with an older buffing type of brush from Tarte that I think originally is for the face but is big enough also for body work. The oils work well with that too. You can of course also use your hands but will then end up with a ton of glitter on your palms which may be messy at least if you use this on the beach or anywhere you can’t wash your hands.
These hold up pretty well to other oil glitter blends such as the body shops honey bronze and Clarins different versions over the years of oil glitter blends. And especially considering the price. They smell nice, like typical sun products a bit sweet coconutty fruity, but also in a bit of a synthetic way. They are different from newer types of shimmer products like Sol De Janeiros different shimmer blends that give more colour and sheen, or such products like prty potion or vita liberata that makes shimmer products for the body that gives both color, shine and cosmetically smoothes the skin.
Pro’s: The price, hard to beat. It can look stunning on pictures and if on the beach where it can be reapplied and one can keep up the glossy aspect of the compound without ruining clothes or Running the risk of getting glitter all over the place.
Con’s: That the glossiness from the oil disappears as the “oil” dries down making it just glittery. That the difference between the different colours is so subtle that there is hardly any difference once the product has been spread out and has dried down apart from different coloured glitters.
The plastic lid over the cap does not sit tight enough so if you grab the bottle by the lid you may drop the glass bottle. Also the pump is not the kind you can open and close which makes it tricky to just throw this in your beach bag without risking leakage, especially if the plastic lid breaks or disappears.
Would I buy it again? Well maybe. After all an affordable glitter product is a product you can be frivolous with and can allow yourself to slather on more often than you perhaps will do with an expensive product from brands like Fenty, Patrick Ta or Clarins for instance. Glitter is fun but expensive shiny bottles of sparkliness tends to end up warming shelves awaiting special occasions that doesn’t come along too often instead of being used, but this is a product that you can afford to use often given the price and especially if you like me splurged on the bundle of all four. The good thing also with that they are quite similar on the body is that they can all be used up.
Do I have other shimmery product I like better? Yes I do. My favourite at the moment is the one from Sol de Janeiro to highlight parts of the body and Vita Liberata for my legs…
