Alright everybody, this product attracts various ratings, but I think some of the issues that have been brought up can be troubleshooted. I’m a super sweaty person, and have been on the hunt for a natural deodorant that works for the longest time because the aluminum in the clinical and regular deodorants caused formation of deep cysts in my armpits. This one eliminates the smell, even though I still sweat like nobody’s business (I apply a little more than a pea’s worth of the paste) but the key to using it without irritation is softening the paste into a thin liquid. Before buying it, I was aware of the irritation that others have experienced with it when reading reviews on amazon, but this review helped me decide to try it. –>
The guy who wrote the review suggesting wetting the paste before putting it on the pit, and when I apply it as a thin watery paste, it dries into a matte finish. No stains on clothes either, but some small flakes sometimes appears on clothes, it easily washes out. I haven’t had irritation and has been the best at warding away smells of all natural deodorants I have tried. It’s cheap and worth a shot, even if it doesn’t work for you. But you never know!!

I feel like I’m in the minority here. Maybe it was a funky batch but the one I bought was so chalky and hard and difficult to spread on. It crumbled on my armpits and would leave them white and crusty looking. Also I think my skin reacts badly to something in this product, maybe the baking soda? and it makes my armpits burn and itch at the same time. I do have to say though heat when I did use it it did absorb moisture but I could never use this with sleeveless shirts and never two days in a row. I was really disappointed.

I recently started using Oyin Funk Butter. I have tried many other natural deodorants, and this is the only one I have found that works….and it’s not just “so-so”, it REALLY works. I have the Black Cedar Fig, as well as the unscented. I was a little nervous to try the unscented at first ( I was worried that I would smell); however, it works super well too. I couldn’t believe it! I sweat quite a bit (for a girl), but Funk Butter keeps me dry, and I don’t smell at all. Even when I work out, i don’t smell at all (and I’m usually completely drenched). I will definitely buy this again.
It doesn’t sting when I use it immediately after I shave; however, if I use it on a day that I wax, it will sting for about 30 minutes or so.

I fell in love with this product when I started using it because it’s all natural and it really works to control the funk! Then, about a month or so later, my armpits started to turn red, burn, peel, and get horribly rashy. I had never before reacted to a single deodorant, so I was surprised. I started asking around and discovered I was not the only person I know to whom this had happened with Oyin. Some people have said it has to do with “yeastie beasties” growing in my pits as a result of the ingredients. All I know is it hurts when I use this for extended periods of time. What I’m finding is if I use it for about two to three weeks then switch off to another deodorant for another week or two, I don’t get the burn, rash, and peeling skin. So I love the Oyin Funk Butter, but I only love it three out of every four weeks on average.

I’m not sure if I’ll keep using this or not, but I will say this: Oyin Funk Butter, unlike many natural deodorants, actually works. I don’t know how they did it, but it works. It keeps me unsweaty and unfunky as well as or better than drugstore anti-perspirants that contain potentially harmful ingredients. I have this in Black Cedar Fig, which is subdued, understated, earthy and gorgeous.
The only bad aspects have already been noted: It comes in a tin, which would be fine if it were more solid but it’s fairly creamy/sloshy. You must rub it in with your fingertips, which I personally don’t mind but I can see how some people might. It STINGS like a mother on freshly shaved pits, so beware. (i think it’s the baking soda.) So yeah, my own personal jury is still out regarding reorder, but it is by far the most effective natural deodorant I’ve used.

I need to preface this review by saying that I love to the point of obsession several other Oyin items (and will be writing shiny shiny reviews for the Black Soap, Honeytint lip balm, and Whipped Shea Butter as soon as I can add new products to the database). And that at $4.50 for a 2oz. tin and just the tiniest fingertip of butter needed per pit, this looked like a fantastic bargain from a small, independent company that creates top-quality, minimal-ingredient, vegetarian/vegan handmade products. This definitely would be the right sauce for the job…for someone who doesn’t have my armpits. Oh, also, for someone who isn’t queasy about massaging product into their armpits, because this is a dip-and-spread operation.
Unfortunately, the tin leaked in transit, which I chalked up to summertime shipping and a not-quite-tight-enough-seal. The FB itself – Black Cedar Fig scent – smelled fantastic in the packaging, but just didn’t mesh well with my body chemistry; it left me feeling sweatier than usual and definitely smelling kind of metallic. I went home and cried into my Whipped Shea Butter.

This is the only natural deodorant that has really absorbed moisture for me. I like it, but hate how it must be applied (with fingers). I hear some people apply it with a Q-tip. It’s also not great for summer and whenever my sleeves don’t cover my underarm b/c it can leave a powdery residue which is not cute lol. I will buy again b/c nothing else compares to it for me (I’ve tried SO many brands from various health food stores). I’ve used the unscented, coco mango and black cedar fig. The scents are great!

I try to use only chemical-free products as long as I can find a good equivalent. Natural deordorant happens to be one of the most difficult things to find, which is strange considering I rarely sweat & eat a very healthy diet. I have tried practically every natural one out there & none worked. Oyin’s is the only one that is effective. It’s important to make sure you use enough of it & that’s what makes this nice because it allows you to do that. When they first came out with the product it was a little difficult to spread, but then they improved the formula to make it creamier. I like the Coco-Mango the best. Also what is great is how long one tin lasts. I take a portion out & put in a smaller container & refrigerate the rest to keep fresh.
Ingredients: Baking Soda, Corn Starch, Shea Butter, Coconut Oil, Arrowroot Powder, Kaolin Clay, Calendula & Chamomile Powders, Olive Oil, fragrance.

I liked this when I first strated using in in fall 2005. Probably TMI, but I just could not seem to find a deo that worked for the full day, and to my surprise this did. I even re-bought it, it worked so well; I stocked up and got 3 tins of it. But, there does not seem to be any consistency in the formulation from tin to tin of this stuff — my first tin smelled totally different than the one I have now, also some tins are super oily whereas others aren’t and are more paste-like. Stirring it up does not help this and it is messy to try to do that. The tin itself is a big part of why I am hucking this into the trashcan — it leaks and is a pain in the as* to open. Not a morning-friendly part of my routine. Goodbye oyin funk butter! But if you figure out the packaging thing, I’ll be back!

This seems to be working very well. I wanted a natural deodorant that was aluminum -free but still worked well at keep me dry and smelling great. The only problem with this is the application. The deodorant comes in a metal tin and has a runny consistency, which causes it to slosh around in the container. You also have to rub this on with your fingers which is a little messy. But it seems to work so I’ll keep using.
