Why does La Mer insist on messing with some of their cult favorites? First their beloved TM, and now the refining facial? The new oil exfoliator smells good (like the renewal oil) and that’s about all I can say about it. It is a jelly form, as La Mer says, but the oil runs out of it – it leaks out of the container if the lid is not on well. The sugar/salt grains are large, and you cannot use this alone unless you like a LOT of grease/moisture on your face after – must follow up with a second cleanser (this is coming from a fan of oil cleansers…)

La Mer’s new Replenishing Oil Exfoliator for face is launching May 1st 2018. It is supposed to be suitable for all skin types, including sensitive skin, the product is presented in a 100 ml tube and it comes with a price tag of £85. It is replacing The Refining Facial.
“The gentle new exfoliator, which has a consistency of a thick golden jelly, is formulated with the Miracle Broth, a blend of natural oils, kelp, molasses, and vitamin C. The delicate scrub is infused with natural exfoliating agents such as sea salt and sugar crystals.”
People with acne-prone skin should be beware of the product with mostly natural oils. They tend to clog pores.
People with dryer skin will most likely welcome the new addition for the skin supposedly feeling more hydrated than using a traditional scrub.
The formula is composed mainly of different (natural) oils and a meager amount of the Miracle Broth (certainly under 1%). La Mer now uses salt and sugar crystals as the exfoliating agents. These are way better for the environment and fully bio-degradable, however the size and shape of the crystals are way more difficult to control than that of jojoba-beads (also fully bio-degradable) or that of Polyethylene (cheaper alternative, however not degradable and not allowed for cosmetic use on several continents). This may result in discomfort due to fractionally deeper exfoliation. The choice of incorporating these crystals into oils, rather than a water-based formula, will help the perception of gentleness on the skin.
I find the formula too sticky and heavy at application, difficult to apply too. The gentleness and lightness of The Refining Facial is unfortunately long gone. After one usage, I felt my skin raw, tender and painful for many hours due to the heavy-duty exfoliating agents.
I believe that this product would rather suit for body usage on coarser skin (like the heels and elbows) rather than for the delicate facial skin.
