I have a couple of different things to say about this than others have said, so it’s not a typical review, but hopefully it helps someone a little.
I tried this as a mask a times, but prefer it as a scrub. However, even if you use it as a mask, you get some scrubbing properties from it when you take it off, so I find it’s a scrub either way. It’s always nice to have options. I have used it both ways so I’ll sort of compare them to each other.
I tried this as a mask with milk, with yeast and milk, and just as a scrub. I personally love yeast masks but as my skin improves I use them less. I also previously favored brown sugar as a scrub. The reason for that was that I heard a few years ago that you should only scrub with something that dissolves, however, sugar’s downfall is that it’s a bit bigger and therefore can damage more, where this is finer. I’ve dealt with barrier issues and being over dried (which caused more sensitivity and more acne and a horrible cycle) and I have to mention that people with that problem really should avoid scrubbing all together. However, most people don’t have that problem, so occasional, gentle manual exfoliation can be ok. Some people prefer chemical exfoliation and I also am sensitive to some of those. I’m personally someone who scrubs only very rarely. And any way you do it, you don’t want to over do it. If you have a carrier oil you trust and know you don’t react to, I think that would be another great way to mix and scrub with that, but you’d have to mix right before application each time.
That said, this is a much gentler scrub than the stone fruit pits or shell powders. It’s finely milled and feels like a micro-foliant which is nice. It can be tricky though, because it’s a flour and balls up a little with water (and maybe oil?). I think this actually has some beneficial properties from leaving it on like a mask, so consider doing that even if you are interested in rice powder as a scrub. I can’t say I saw a HUGE improvement from it though, and maybe again that’s my issue with needing to repair my barrier or having active break outs, but I won’t give it a bad rating based on that. I think in general scrubs don’t ‘fix’ most issues but it’s a nice addition. I wouldn’t use anything thicker or harsher than this. Always remember to moisturize after scrubbing. I also feel softer right after any scrub, but it’s sometimes a bit of an illusion, if you don’t replenish the moisture it doesn’t feel so great later on. I do see myself using this occasionally to help loosen blackheads. If it will, (or any scrub really does) I can’t be sure but that’s the idea.
Tl;Dr: If you like manual scrubbing, it’s better than most other ones out there. I started using it more after I got into micro needling. (About 3 days later you get pretty dry and need an exfoliation.) It’s also great on the lips.

I use rice flour for scrubs all the time. You can buy flour which is finer, and ground rice which is a bit coarser. Great for body or face scrubs. It can be a little drying, but that might be what you want. I don’t buy brown rice flour, just regular rice flour. It costs $1 for enough to last a really long time.

Back to the DYI Skincare after I discovered my favorite exfoliant contains Wheat Protein~of which I am allergic. My skin was looking vaguely unhappy and strangely sore and greasy/dry. Then I started getting sores~not pimples, sores~on my face. It had never occurred to me to read the ingredients, because unless you buy the Professional size..THERE ARE NONE!! I own a bottle of the Professional size, and I finally read the ingredients, and was subsequently heart-broken. I had to put my VERY expensive and much loved Dermalogica Microfoliant down (available for swap, mail me for more info) and figure something out for myself. I looked at different brands of similar products All contained Wheat Protein.
After some research it dawned on me it’s the rice powder that is the fundamental ingredient and responsible for the smoothness I would feel after using Microfoliant.
Since Bob’s Red Mill Brown Rice Flour is Gluten-free, four bucks in a BIG bag & just down the street in the local grocery, I went for it. The last two mornings (just as I had done with Daily Microfoliant) I mixed the fine rice flour with Dermalogica Special Cleansing gel. It works wonderfully. I have ordered Silk Powder online to make a moisture imparting, sheen inspiring daily exfoliant of my own. I think Rice Flour is my new favorite exfoliant.

I got a bag of I think the brand is Bob’s Red Mill Brown Rice flour at the store. I mix just a bit of it w/ oil (olive) and rub it over moist skin as an exfoliator. It works very nicely and is better than apricot scrubs I think because the granules are finer (better for skin). It stays grainy and does not glob up like a regular wheat flour would when you mix it w/ water and rub on your skin. Works very nicely for exfoliating, reasonably gentle but be careful not to rub too hard (bad for skin) – especially if your skin is sensitive like mine. No allergic reaction or anything and I have very reactive sensitive skin.

Place brown rice in a blender or coffee grinder until it is a very thin powder/flour texture…the thinner the better. I used it this morning (just a little bit) with some water and used it as a face scrub and it worked wonders…make sure it is not too coarse, so that it does not hurt your skin. My face was soft and had a glow….I highly recommend for face, for body…Also applying this as a facial powder works very well.I love the smell and recommend to anyone as it is cheap and works so well. Also different types of rice is recommended ie, red rice, black rice, wild rice….
