The new Ciate London Watermelon Burst Hydrating Primer has me feeling a bit underwhelmed. First of all, this does apply pretty easily and leaves skin with a bit of a dewy sheen/ shine. This does apply super easily over moisturizer or sunscreen- no pilling involved. This also provides skin with a nice canvas for foundation and makeup application. Foundation applies easily over this primer, and the primer does extend wear time by at least a couple of hours.
The major downside of the Ciate Watermelon Burst Hydrating Primer is the formula that Ciate chose to use to create this primer. As someone with drier skin, I really dislike face primers that contain fair amounts of denatued alcohol. Those with oily skin might not find it to be as much of an issue. When I do my skincare and makeup for the day my biggest concern is to protect my skin from pollution, UVA & UVB rays, dust, or any secondhand smoke (thankfully most of my friends have quit). My second biggest concern is how my skin and makeup look for that day. Because of the large amount of denatured alcohol in the Watermelon Burst Primer I worry that this could make my skin more easily damaged by pollution and free radicals.
To top off the issue on the formula, this also has a decent amount of fragrance- this really does smell like freshly cut watermelon! Personally, I wish Ciate would have just let the watermelon extract in the formula speak for itself and add no additional fragrance. Fragrance and denatured alcohol can be a skin sensitizing issue for many people-those with dry skin, skin issues such as eczema, those with naturally sensitive skin, and those with a damaged skin barrier. I highly recommend doing a skin patch test before using this, and also be certain to use sunscreen to mitigate the amount of potential damage your skin might encounter through the day. Personally, I can’t envision myself reaching for this primer over other truly hydrating primers that I love (Too Faced Hangover, Marc Jacobs Coconut Primer, Smashbox Radiance Primer).
