This was my first setting spray ever so I’m not sure how it measures up to others on the market. I have very oily skin that cannot be salvaged by an extensive skincare routine, primers, or setting powders. I have not noticed any difference in my makeup wear time after using this, nor does it keep my face matte. The mist isn’t very fine, and squirts a little.

At first I tried this and thought it broke me out so I put it back down and then recently picked it back up because I found my make up to be going on powdery and wanted it to blend better. I don’t think it was this breaking me out because I’ve used it a few times this week and haven’t had a reaction. I took off a lippy because my mister does not work the best even if other reviewers seem to say it’s good.
What drew me to this setting spray, is the fact that it does NOT have alcohol denat. in it, which would definitely break me out.
I’ll update if I start to notice any irritation.

I really enjoy this “instant matt” setting spray, much better than essence’s other one, the “keep it perfect!” fixing spray.
Although this is supposed to be matte, it doesn’t feel drying at all, and my skin is pretty dry. My makeup stays in place all day, not very disturbed in the humidity at all. I think it definitely improves the wear time of my makeup. It also helps tone down the dryness/powdery look of face powder, but it works just as well without powder over foundation.
I love how the spray mechanism dispenses product as a fine, even mist. I do one spritz for each side of my face. However, I wish the bottle were transparent like the “keep it perfect!” one, so I could know when the end is near.

Loved the finish & wear but it breaks me out so unfortunately a pass. Already resold it so I hope it works better for somebody else.

OK I actually like this setting spray – fairly good lasting power, GREEEEAT mister – I’m thoroughly impressed. It’s such a beautiful fine mist on this pump. Outstanding price. I have dry, sensitive skin though and this puppy breaks me out. Nooooooo

It works perfectly for keeping my make-up on place and making it non-transfer, but it doesn’t keep me matte for long. My T-zone gets shiny in 2 hours. Overall, this product is really fine for its price, texture and anything, it didn’t give me breakouts, considering that I have really oily and sensitive, acne-prone skin. I’m totally gonna continue using it.

I tend to stay away from matte setting sprays as I like a dewy look, and my skin is somewhat dry. I ran out of setting spray and this was NZ$5 so I figured I’d give it a shot anyway. It’s not the best, but definitely not the worst. Doesn’t leave my face feeling tight and it’s quite cooling and refreshing now that its Summer here in NZ. The spray nozzle is a good one too. Don’t know if it makes my makeup last longer, but definitely sets it and stops it looking so powdery etc. Would repurchase.

I am the first to review this product on MUA…the word “Matt” is not a misspelling on my part. Essence spells it without the e.
Sales rep at Ulta wanted to get my 2 cents on this product because she said it’s been flying off the shelf since first launching recently. And I have to say, I really like it. I have tried all of the setting sprays on the Ulta/Sephora market at the moment. Urban Decays are decent but not perfect, Dermalogica broke me out, Mario Badescu’s contain peppermint oil, and my biggest issue with a LOT of the sprays on the market; are that they contain alcohol denat high up on the list. It’s hard to find a setting spray that won’t upset my sensitive/rosacea/acne prone skin. And then the few that don’t, come at the cost of actually making my makeup look worse. I almost gave up.
What drew me to Essence’s Instant Matt wasn’t the cheap price tag. I’d be willing to spend more. It was the no-thrill ingredient list that prompted me to try this. I have pasted it below.
I wouldn’t say this makes any of my foundations more matte. But I will say it does dry down to nothing, which is a lot more than most “matte” setting sprays on the market do. It takes away any powder-y finish without adding dewiness back in. I use a very matte foundation (Rimmel Stay Matte Liquid Mousse – review in profile). This pairs perfectly with it and sort of blends my make up into one another (fndt/blush/powder/concealer). So it looks a lot more natural. I will repurchase.
