I like that this has high SPF.
The liquid is pearlescent-tan and does seem to leave a grayish cast, but this gets covered with powder so it doesn’t really bother me. It also blurs minor imperfections and primes your skin nicely for foundation, powder or other face products.
It has a strong citrus scent.

The packaging was pretty and looked like other elf skin care products. It was nice and light with little to no fragrance. However, it left the dreaded gray mask on my face. I looked casket ready. I tried to cover it with a B.B. cream and it didn’t work. Maybe for someone with a different skin tone it would work but for me it was a no go!!

ELF Cosmetics has been really stepping up their game recently, especially with their Beauty Shield products. Once the ELF Beauty Shield Skin Makeup Primer is quite an impressive primer and I love that ELF has chosen to include some antioxidants and skin soothing ingredients. This is a mineral sunscreen with an impressive SPF 50. The primer is a little thick and does take a little bit of work to smooth over your skin, it also has a neutral tone that most people won’t have any issue with it. This does contain a hint of fragrance but it does dissipate pretty quickly so it isn’t bothersome. Once you put in the little effort it takes to apply (due to the thick consistency) it you will be happy with this. My video review can be seen here: U

I’m really not SURE what this “stuff” (being polite) is supposed to be. I was kinda excited cuz i thought it was a REAL moisturizer with 50 SPF, like my regular face moisturizer that I’m using right now by Cerave AM w/SPF 30. Welllll….. i just tried this E.L.F. whatever it is, and did as directed, shook product very WELL…. making sure the lotion /spf were all mixed together. As I was shaking it it kept throwing out something like brown water. So I stopped and pumped the tube to see what was the deal, and again, brownish watery stuff came out, so I’m not sure what it’s supposed to be. To ME, brownish water is NOT a moisturizer. My Cerave one is thick and has the coverage of a thick moisturizer and little more white due to spf in it. They call what I bought, “E.L.F. Beauty Shield, skin shielding moisturizer.” I see NONE of that description in what I got out of the bottle. It’s going right back to store tomorrow. Would I buy again, NEVER! Again, hope this helps anyone else if you see this and think “ahhh… a nice face moisturizer with SPF 50….wow! Yes, this is very negative review, just callin it as i see it.

This primer is EXTREMELY thick and difficult to blend. Even though it is lightly tinted, it gave my skin a white cast. Will not repurchase.

Nice tinted primer, but I would NOT rely on this for sun protection and would caution anyone else from doing so. The high SPF may lull you into treating this primer like it’s a skincare product, but I highly doubt anyone is using it in large enough quantities (a minimum quarter teaspoon for the face, not including the neck) to actually get SPF 50 level protection (or even SPF 15) out of it. Because while this product looks great when applied sparingly, it looks chalky and unnatural when applied with a heavy hand. Less is more is the key to making this product work for you as a primer/sheer foundation, and less is more is the opposite approach you need to take with sun protection.
Anyway, I do really like this product as a primer/corrector. I have a fairly good complexion and don’t really need or want to use face products with a lot of coverage, and this product has just enough to make me look more “polished.” It smooths out my pores, evens out my complexion, and has a nice matte finish. Which is exactly what I want from this type of product. When used in small amounts (just a little dab on my nose, cheeks, chin and forehead), it just melts into my skin and looks like I’m not wearing anything. It spreads and blends out very easily with my fingers, though I’m sure it’d also apply nicely with a sponge.
The only thing I really dislike about this product (other than the way it looks when I’ve applied it heavily enough to provide adequate sun protection) is the packaging, The clear cap fits so tightly on the tube, that I snapped the dispenser off the tube while trying to get the cap off. I now have to dispense the product by squeezing it out like toothpaste, which isn’t ideal. Still, I’ll keep using it and will repurchase it when I run out. It’s a little pricey by ELF standards, but there isn’t anything else at this price point that I like better.

I like this product and will probably repurchase when I run out, but there are a few issues that keep me from giving it a better review. First, the good parts — I like that this product provides SPF 50 physical sunscreen. The tint is a good color for me — I’m a light-medium neutral skin tone and it blends right into my skin tone. It provides a nice look on its own, and a surprising amount of coverage. Pretty matte at first, and creates a nice, smooth surface. The negatives: I wish this didn’t have fragrance!!!! Please, ELF, no one needs fragrance in their primer or sunscreen. I have truly sensitive skin that reacts to so many things, so it makes me nervous and it’s so unnecessary in a skincare product. Women are becoming savvier about this issue, too (fragrance causing allergic reactions, etc.) so they would be well served to just leave it out. Also, it became very shiny and sticky feeling over the course of the day. Granted, I put on a heavy layer since it was my first time wearing it and I pumped too much out. But wow, it felt like I had paste on my face by the end of the day, and looked really shiny. So the matte finish didn’t hold up. Next time I will use half as much product and hope that helps a bit with the feeling and shine issues. Finally, and importantly, this product is NOT labeled as “Broad Spectrum” — it uses nano zinc, which provides good UVB coverage but not good UVA coverage, even though it is zinc based! It is NOT a mistake that it’s labeled SPF 50 but does NOT say Broad Spectrum — that’s because it’s NOT. I layered it over a broad spectrum moisturizer, so that’s okay as a workaround, but it can’t really do the job I’d like it to do on its own. I wish they had opted for non-nano zinc for this reason (non-nano would cover UVA). I’ll use it for coverage and some extra SPF, but not without a broad spectrum moisturizer. It’s worth the money, I guess, but it would be soooo much better with Broad Spectrum coverage and no fragrance.

I picked up this product on a whim, and am so glad I did! It is quite thick, but blends easily and matches my skintone nicely. I love that it has 50 spf, and that my acne-prone skin has had no problems with it. I use it on those days when I need hide my blemishes in a jiffy, without the fuss.

This is a great idea, but unfortunately, ELF went about it the wrong way. Let me start by saying that I had no idea that companies were allowed to import sunscreen from China. I thought the FDA has strict rules on this sort of stuff. The brand Arcona, makes the same thing, at the same price, but their sunscreen is made in Los Angeles. You can buy Arcona at Dermstore. It’s called Rezone 40 and now that I’ve used this crappy ELF stuff, I’ve just restocked my Rezone 40 and bought 3 of them.
One of the first things I noticed when I put this ELF stuff on was the awful, “I’m gonna get dermatitis for sure” scent. It smells like expired oranges. If you like that sort of thing, then by all means, buy this stuff. If not, then get the Arcona brand, which is 100% fragrance free. The second thing I noticed was the “universal tint” which a lot of beauty bloggers said “melts into skin”. No way! It turned orange on me immediately. Arcona’s tint isn’t universal. It’s for light (not fair) to medium skin, unfortunately, but on me, it blends immediately. The ELF and Arona, both share the same texture as the Tarte Amazonian Clay foundation, in that it’s a mouse like texture. The ELF Primer has an SPF of 50, and I don’t know how they would know that since it came from China, the Arcona is SPF 40+ and is water resistant for 80 minutes. With ELF, you get 1 ounce for $12 and Arcona, you get 2 ounces for $24. Elf.com does not accept returns and Dermstore.com does.
No, I don’t work for Arcona, at all. It’s just that, I have this lousy primer on, I just did my full face makeup and can feel my cheeks tingling from an allergic reaction I know I’m going to get from it and now I’m really annoyed. Usually I love ELF.
