Essie Luxedo is a super sexy very dark polish that looks stunning on fingers and toes. In artificial light it looks black but in daylight it is definitely a very dark plum. It’s perfect for winter and autumn but because I don’t do “seasons” I wear it all year round. It applies easily and smoothly and is totally perfect in 2 coats. With a top coat it lasts well over a week.

I love a good, dark almost black, but not actually black shade, and Essie Luxedo is just that. This is a very dark purple that does appear to be almost black on the nail, but because it isn’t black, it’s not as harsh. When held up next to a true black, you can definitely tell this is not a black. Just a dark, vampy shade. This is a beautiful fall/winter shade and one of my favorites. I always find myself going back to it throughout the winter time. The application is a little tricky, but I think that’s just because it’s such a dark color. You just have to be a little more careful and do some clean-up around the cuticles as you go.

This polish has a nice formula, goes on very smoothly, has a nice jelly-creme finish and opacity can be had in one coat if you’re careful with application, but it as it tends to be a little streaky and have bald spots, you really need two coats unless you’re extremely good with a brush.
As for the colour, it’s a very, very dark plum-grape, and I know this only because I put a thin coat of this on a piece of shiny white cardboard so I could see it. On the nails, this is dark, as in, two coats gives an off black so deep that it may as well be black. I suppose in some light it might be possible to see that this is actually a deep purple, but I don’t know what it would be (admittedly, I didn’t wear this long enough to try it in all kinds of lighting situations).
Unfortunately, despite this polish’s good qualities, my reaction to it is just one big MEH. I got this as part of a swap, and I’m glad I didn’t pay for it, because while it’s a good polish, it’s so far from unique it’s not even funny. If I didn’t already have several deep, dark, may-as-well-be-black purples, I might enjoy this more, but…. meh.
Can definitely recommend if you like Essie polishes and want a very deep, dark plum that looks black, but if you have anything even remotely like that in your collection already, you really don’t need this.

I saw this and really liked the colour and I still do. Essie polish is always smooth and good quality. It dries almost straight away, which is great for when you’re in a hurry – only thing is you need to apply it quite thin because it came up so dark, bit dissapointing because it was almost black first time.

I just returned from a girly day with my Mommy where we got mani pedis and went to get something to eat. I have this on my hands and feet and it is a wonderful new color from Essie’s Winter Collection. It looks really dark. Black after two coats and you need two as the first one went on streaky. I’m sure people will compare this to OPI’s Lincoln Park After Dark and they may be correct in the comparison but this looks more black whereas OPI’s was slightly more purple on me. Eggplant, maybe? Anyway, I will be updating this review after a few days of wear as I have no idea if it will chip badly by tomorrow morning or not. But for tonight? Love!
**UPDATE**03/17/13 I just love vampy nails. Ever since The Hills when Lauren Conrad had black, very well manicure nails I’ve loved them. I tracked down this polish in Ulta since that spa day with my Mommy years ago. Put this baby on my nails tonight and am loving the walk down memory lane that familiar colors provide. I still love this color with all of me. If you can find it, try it. Well done Essi
