Classic essie formula. Thin and takes 2 coats. This is a basic black. No glitter. No shimmer. But still shiny. Love it

Maybe I got a bad bottle (based on other killer reviews), but this chips on me by day 2 (sometimes even the same day depending what I’m doing/if I do my nails in the AM). It also gets gloopy by the third or fourth use. Really not a great quality formula for me.
I switched over to OPI “Black Onyx” and had better luck. Yes, it costs slightly more; however, my manicure will last me the work week now.
I can’t recommend buying Essie’s licorice based on my personal experience.

The best black. I love essie’s formula, it lasts forever on me. It is thin, so it is easy to control and doesn’t get gloopy. Builds to an opaque, shiny black.

I’m baffled by the stellar reviews and I have to wonder if I got a bad batch, despite purchasing directly from Ulta. I have to dip the brush back into the bottle with every brush stroke. The formula gets gloopy. The brush leaves texture marks on the nail. It requires two coats, and it also chips within 2 days. Terrible. I have 5+ year old polishes that perform better than this one!

This is a black cream polish; basic, but a great staple to have in my collection and fantastic for nail art. It is not the most opaque polish, so two coats are required, sometimes three when covering the whole nail or using a striping brush. But it works really well with nail art when using a dotting tool to apply, no second coat/dot needed, just clean the tool off every so often so the polish doesn’t get too thick. Like all Essie cream polishes it has great staying power and no chipping. It does have a tendency to smear when top coat is applied, more so than other polishes. But when I need a new bottle of black, I’ll get this again.

Gorgeous black polish – completely opaque on one coat with no streaks and is this beautiful glossy black on the nails. Very elegant and chic!

Licorice is the most amazing black polish I have ever tried: opaque after one coat, fast drying, super shiny. If you have very long nails you will probably need a very geenrous coat or twocoats, but generally this is a one coater. I noticed that it tends to get dense after some time, but with a thinner you should be able to fix it. The brush is amazing in my opinion, it allows you to paint perfectly your nails even if you’re in a hurry or not very precise.

This black polish is amazing! So opaque after one coat. It’s also very shiny which is awesome. Great job Essie.

I’ve been trying black nail polishes for a good 5 years… this is the best so far.
I love the d-shaped brush. Unlike most other bands, this is opaque in 1 – 2 coats and isn’t streaky at all. I wear this on bare nails with Seche Vite on stop and it holds strong for 3-4 days in perfect condition. I change polish at least x2 per week, so I’ve never tested beyond day 5. Licorice will wear on the tips at day 4 but I’ve never seen any major chips.
My experience with black polish has been generally awful. The firs two days I feel like Xena Warrior Princess, but on day three I feel like an untidy mess. This gained me at least 2 extra days, and that is plenty. I do get serious shrinkage with this polish and it chips eventually but that’s much better than any other black polish I’ve tried. I don’t know why, but every other black polish I have tried is a streaky, chippy mess in 48 hours.
I don’t know why but black shows flaws and goes to pieces sooner than many other lighter colours. Go figure. Anyway, this was a great addition to my arsenal and I would definitely repurchase and recommend.

I will keep this short, IT IS PERFECT. The blackest, shiniest richest colour. Buy it.
