I am one of those people who likes to paint my nails when they get longer and harder in the summer. Winter does something to my nails…dry air, cold, lack of sunshine…not exactly sure. Anyway, polish on my nails in the summer can feel stifling, weird sounding unless you are like me with sensitive nail beds that think they need to breath. This breathable stuff is comfortable to wear and holds up decently. Not as shiny as I would like but adding a TC would ruin the point. Limited color selection and availability, but I stick with just 2 colors anyway…a dark vamp red and a fuchsia.

I got super happy when I (finally) found these in a store in Belgium and they were on sale so I bought two colours at once (Pamper Me & Give Me A Break). My nails chip quite quickly, so that’s why I’m always excited to try products that aren’t necessarily bad for my nails. I’ve tried the Sally Hansen Oil Therapy ones before and they’re kind of okay, but they still make my nails chip eventually. I also tried the Essence ones, but they didn’t last long at all. However – these ORLY ones though! I did notice that they weren’t super pigmented: especially Pamper Me (the lighter colour) needed a few layers before it looked nice. The darker colour (Give Me A Break) needed two – which was okay. They did dry quickly, so that didn’t make it that bad. Both polishes stay on pretty nicely! They last for about a week without fading/chipping much – which is imo (especially for a caring polish and not a gel-look polish) really long. I think they do damage a little more easily than ‘normal’ polishes; I went to a swimming pool, for example, and two of my nails lost a bit of their polish there.
I was impressed with how my nails looked underneath: they didn’t break or chip AT ALL. I’m not 100% sure if this is the polish, as I’ve only tried them for about a month, but still – with normal polish, my nails usually chip off along with the polish. They also do this without polish, and it did not happen now. So it feels like this stuff really prevented them from doing so. I noticed that the polish also kind of fades near the tips rather than chipping. It somehow feels quite nice to wear this polish – my nails don’t feel dried out. Still – not sure if this is really the polish and stuff, but I’m happy about it! Think I’m going to get some more colours. It isn’t a super cheap product – but you do get a pretty big amount of it and as far as I can tell: it does what it’s supposed to do: giving your nails a nice colour without damaging them too much! Would definitely repurchase.

I love this breathable “treatment” and nail polish. It is less drying and seems to be more nourishing then other polishes. It goes on thick, and has its leveling agent, so if you go in with a good amount of polish the first time, you won’t get nearly as much streaks. By the second coat you are good to go. I will have to say this product takes a while to dry. It doesn’t chip, but it can create dents. Also you won’t get that gel like shine you normally get when you use seche vite. The color range veers towards nudes, and pale colors, which is perfect for me. My recent favorite is called down to earth, which is a taupe-brown, that almost works as a nude color for my tan brown South Asian skin tone.

I selected the “Pamper Me” color in the line. I wish I liked this product more. I do feel it is gentle on my nails and allows them to recover from weakness incurred from regular lacquer. That was the main purpose of my purchase. However, in terms of wear, I do have some issues. This dries very dull, and this causes my nails to look old and rough. A one day old application looks like it is a week old. That is frustrating. I also have issues with application. The polish is difficult to apply. It’s very streaky. Because of this, I have to use more product to deal with the streaking. This causes the coats to be thicker and by turn, extends the drying time. I would like to see Orly improve this formula because the idea behind the product is great. It just isn’t quite there yet. In the meantime, I think I will stick with the clear color in the line.

First of all, let me state that I really respect Orly for making the Orly Breathable line. Since oxygen and hydration are able to pass through the nail polish directly to the nails, people of Muslim faith can use it. It is Halal Certified. Having said that, I am not Muslim, but I do love a good nail polish. I find that the Orly Breathable line, much like the Sally Hansen Colour Therapy line, leaves my nails healthy, strong, and flake-free…so I gravitate to these lines when I am trying to grow out my nails. I like the Orly Breathable line a little better than the Sally Hansen Colour Therapy as I find it has a better variety of shades. Unfortunately, I do not find that either line wears well on its own. I have discovered a little trick, and it seems to work best with the Orly Breathable line. I do two to three coats of the Orly Breathable – no base coat. I then do a thin coat of Gelous (from Sally’s) and then top with Seche Vite. I might get a few bubbles – most will dissolve once the combination dries, the others I can live with. The Gelous/Seche Vite layers make the Orly Breathable last like concrete! Of course, you lose the “breathable” component, but if you are just looking for a healthy nail polish with some staying power, you can really make this work.

I’ve tried a number of colours in this line — also found in Canada as “Quo by Orly Breathable” — admittedly not hard to do as the colour selection is unfortunately a bit limited. It does have all the basics, and seems to be expanding the line, so, hooray for that. Purple/periwinkle fans will find a good home here…
This is sold as part polish, part treatment — I’m not sure my nails need to “breathe” (wild guess: the technology used for this and other “breathable” polishes are the same as with 3M’s Tegaderm wound dressings?), but it really does seem to do the trick — plenty of polishes leave the tips of my nails a bit peely and weak, but the downside to wearing this seems to be absolutely zero. They tell you to not use a base or top coat, and virtually all colours are fully on in two coats. The terrific Orly rubber cap is a plus as always, and the brush is very wide; I am a bit clumsy and this goes on with no fuss — application is *very* quick. Drying time is reasonable.
The ONLY downside to this polish is that it is more prone to getting dents in it than other polishes. This isn’t very noticeable, and if it does bother you, a little work with Orly Smudge Fixer will repair it. (The line includes a top coat which I have yet to try, and which I am tempted to pick up to see if this fixes the denting issue.)
Apart from the wonder of no damage (or even staining, even with a dark shade and no base coat), the huge plus of this is the wear time. No matter what I do with my hands, it’s at least five days before the slightest tip wear shows up for me. This, given how things usually roll (with well-reviewed base and top coats) for me, is amazing.
The shine might not thrill those who are into uber-glossy gel-style polishes, but it is quite impressive, moreso given no topcoat. I *really* like the simplicity of this: two coats and done, and forget about it for a week. I end up removing it because I want to change the colour or my nails have grown too much, but have never worn it for long enough to have to take it off due to chipping.
A pale pink recently struck me as a bit too blasé for the day, and I added a pearlised topcoat, and a gel-style glossy topcoat. I fully expected this to make it start chipping away like any other polish, but no! So I’m pretty excited about that — even if it messes with the “breathable” aspect, it is still far and away the longest-lasting polish I have ever used, and stays that way even when you ignore the directions and start adding top coats to change it up.
Full five stars. Canadians take note: the Quo bottles are notably smaller than the regular non-Quo ones, with little to no difference in price, so it’s worth seeking out a Sally Beauty or mail-ordering instead of buying it at Shoppers, or at least waiting for a very good sale. The larger bottles are a very good value. Also notable: none have gone gloppy on me; my Seche Restore hasn’t come out for these once, even though I am pretty fussy on that front.
