Love. I was doubtful upon first application but topcoat and dry down sealed the deal for me. Wearing over a dark neon cobalt blue, next in think I’ll go with a jungle green jelly.
Definitely in the market for a backup.

#230 nicknamed “Unicorns Pee” was amazing as a top coat, reminded me of a shade My Little Ponies might wear. A currently available dupe is Max Factors “Fantasy Fire”, available in mini and full size.
I loved Clarins Nail Polishes, great consistency, non gloopy, non-staining, glossy finish, and they didn’t streak or chip. I have several that I have NEVER found a replacements that are as high quality!

Clarins 230.
It seems that the name itself evokes five of the seven deadly sins: pride, envy, gluttony, lust, and greed. It’s been referred to as Unicorn Pee or my preference – Unicorn Tears, as it will bring you to tears for several reasons:
If you don’t have it, and you want it – it’s not something that is easily obtained.
If you happen to find one available for purchase, you will likely have to pay an exorbitant amount of money for it. The realization of it all will literally make you want to cry.
:”(
If you decide…
Screw it, and hand over the aforementioned exorbitant amount of your hard-earned money for a single bottle of nail polish, you will be moved to tears that you will finally have one of the most coveted polishes on the planet. The realization of it all will literally make you want to cry.
:”)
This overwhelming joy will eventually be brought into sobering reality when you look at your bank account and realize that you just spent the aforementioned exorbitant amount of money on a single bottle of nail polish. The realization of it all will literally make you want to cry.

I have read much about this coveted and virtually impossible to find color on many blogs for many years. I have read about how beautiful the multi-color duo-chrome is. Perhaps infinity-chrome is more accurate, since it is able to reflect so many different colors such as red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple. It is truly unique.
I’ve also tried over and over again to (unsuccessfully) franken this color using different combinations of duo-chrome polishes with purples and reds (even using my HTF polishes such as OPI La Boheme) only to be disappointed to discover that the end result was nothing at all like what I’ve seen in pictures.
After more than 6 years of searching and searching, I finally was able to purchase (at a reasonably inflated price) a bottle of Clarins 230.
Much to my surprise was the consistency. The nail polish itself is extraordinarily thin.
At first, I thought that I was duped and that I received a counterfeit. However, several members of the MUA nail board kindly confirmed that yes; this polish is extremely thin and watery. After applying this polish, I realized that I truly do have the authentic Clarins 230 :”)
I find it interesting that I have not read of anyone really describing just how thin, sheer, and watery this polish really is. It is very unique in that respect, and can say that I have never in my life experienced a nail polish that is as thin and fluid as 230. A part of me feels like Luke Skywalker suddenly finding out Darth Vader was his father – Why didn’t you tell me???
For me at least, having this knowledge would have made such a difference when I was attempting to franken it, as I would have tried a different approach. Perhaps going with a thinned out/sheer red/purple base polish, and focusing more on finding an extremely fine duo-chrome glitter.
What I’ve learned so far…
To truly see its beauty, you really need a base polish that’s either red or a warm purple, and use 230 on top of it. I suppose you could exclusively use 230, but you would need at least 4 or more coats to have the beauty of this polish come through.
It doesn’t make sense to use that much product, when you can have beautifully stunning results by using a darker polish as a base and topping it off with 1 – 2 coats of Clarins 230.
Although I will be exclusively eating ramen noodles for the next month, I am truly thankful that I was finally able to get my hands on this polish. Knowing what I know now… would I buy this bottle again if I could? Yes, I would – but only for the right price. Being the collector that I am, I’m ready to move on.
I hope to one day get my hands on another polish that’s equally as rare and expensive: Essie Starry Starry Nights (the original version).
Perhaps one day.

Clarins #230 has now entered the world of unicorns, rainbows, and leprechauns – unbelievable, hard to find, and absolutely magical! In the bottle the colors range from blue to purple to plum to gold to amber to red – you name it, it’s in there! The microfine glitter changes to all these different colors depending on lighting and bottle angle. On the nail the base color is basically either a jelly blued-purple or a jelly redded-plum depending on lighting and angle. It’s a very sheer jelly polish and will require upwards of four to five coats to get bottle color. In indoor ambient lighting you’re going to see basically a medium to dark plum with red microfine sparkling or, at a different angle, a dark purple with gold/amber microfine sparkling. In outdoor lighting is where this polish really pops and all of the above rainbow colors play on the nail depending on which way you hold your hand.
Application was very smooth and easy; however, the formula is water thin and one has to be slightly careful not to load the brush. I found the brush to be a little wonky and hard to work with – it seemed to have more or fatter bristles than the average nail polish brush and would not fan as easily as other brushes I’ve used. Again, because of the sheerness, if this isn’t layered over another polish, it will take at least 4 coats to get bottle color.
Drying time seemed to be very quick to the touch at five minutes between coats; however, with all these coats it was still squishy even with Seche Vite after 30 minutes. (As a side note, with this many coats SV will cause shrinkage or what looks like instant tip wear.)
Wear time was very good at one week with no chips, cracks, or crazing.
Now for the serious downside – this color is no longer in production and basically cannot be found. If you do find one the price is going to be atrocious!! Is it worth it? It depends on whether you like plum/purple/multichromatic polish.
As for my rating, I knocked off a lippie because of the sheerness of the polish. I also indicated that I would buy this again but that would ONLY be if it came back into production and I didn’t have to pay the out-of-this-world prices now being asked for this color. I only ever indicate that I wouldn’t buy a color again if I really don’t like it.

In the bottle the formula looks medium purple with gold glitter, but its on your nails in that youll get the full effect of the much lusted after Clarins 230. On nails the sheer polish morphs between lilac and pinkish purple, whilst the glitter shimmers with gold, silver, blue and green depending on the light. The glitter particles are very fine, so the formula is smooth to apply no bumps, glitter clumps or streaks.
Using my usual base and top coats this polish will last me around 2/3 days with only minimal tip wear; but Im tough on my nails (self powered wheelchair user), so it will probably last longer on other people.
Ive removed two lippies as the formula is water-thin – itll need layering over another polish and even then it’ll take at least 3 coats to get a decent colour pay off. Plus it dries really slowly and is prone to streaks.
My bottle was bought as part of a mixed brand bundle on Ebay, so it’s possible that someone watered it down, but to be on the safe side I’d caution others from spending a lot of money on this polish – it is lovely to look at, but not to great to work with.

#230 is an unusual, optical illusion sheer purple that basically looks like a black light on your nails — your eyes see an electric purple w/ holographic pinky bronze shimmer in the middle of your nail and the curved sides of your nails look glowy blue.
Funny addition: there’s blue green sparkle in this, but only seen at a few angles. One way is to hold your hand horizontally, palm down and fingers pointing away from you, and slowly tilt it down till the light catches the nail. Kapow! Blue green! But never to be seen at any other angle….
It needs natural light (direct or indirect) to truly pop with the gorgeous optical effect; indoor lighting renders this just a jelly medium purple. Hint: use this as a top coat on dark purples, blacks and blue-purples rather than a zillion coats on it’s own–it was made to go over another Clarins color (but any will do). A deep dark shimmer purple like Rimmel’s Night Before was practically MADE to be topped w/ this.
Drawbacks: hard to find and a bit pricey ($15+) on auction sites or check the swap board. If used on it’s own, color is way sheer — expect to be there for a while doing 3 to 4 coats for bottle color. This formula, for some reason, WILL draw back from your tips when it dries if you use many coats. Works fine as a top coat.
