I like the whimsy of Soap & Glory as a brand, and up until this palette I’ve never been disappointed by their products. Even without the big claim on the packaging (“Our most fabulous collection of wearable colours ever assembled, in our must-have, limited edition ten-shade shadow palette”), this palette is the equivalent on falling flat on your face. If this is the best that Soap & Glory can do eyeshadow wise, then I think you’d better stay away from their shadows altogether.
The one I have is, I believe, 2015’s Christmas edition, and for Christmas 2016 they’ve brought out a new one. To avoid confusion, the version I’m reviewing contains the following shades: Moon Mist, Minky, Nudecomer, Copper, Toasty, Damsel, Cream Soda, Choccy, Plumtious and Smolder. Opening up the cheap (but frankly not terrible for the price) packaging, you’re looking at something that looks very inspired by UD’s Naked 3 palette.
Surprisingly, the best shades in this drugstore palette is without a doubt the matte ones. Sadly, there are only two – Nudecomer and Toasty. Though the pigment isn’t great by any means, they at least blend well and have a pretty smooth formula. Toasty in particular is a great transition shade for someone with pale skin. The other eight are shimmers as best, frosty at worst. When finger swatched they actually swatch decently, if not a little weak in pigment. Sadly, with a brush these shadows are more or less not showing up. What you get when trying to apply them is shimmer, and a complete lack of pigment to go with it. Which means that you have 8 shades of different colour shimmer, with no underlaying colour.
Unfortunately I can’t even comment on longevity, because I wouldn’t leave the house with this shadow on my eyes. I was going to suggest that this palette might be a good idea if you’re quite new to makeup and don’t want to shell out for the Naked 3, but trying to get this palette to work one final time made me change my mind. My advice would be this instead: if you’re looking for a cheap, Naked inspired palette, look for W7’s palettes instead (those I’ve not tried, but heard good things about) or Makeup Revolution’s Iconic palettes. I’m not a huge fan of Makeup Revolution, but compared to this, you’ll get both better value and better results.
+ Cruelty Free
+ The packaging isn’t half bad, for a cheap cardboard
+ The price is quite good in theory, retailing at £10 at Boots, though even £10 is too much if you only find two shades usable
– Terrible, terrible pigment
– Some shades are overly frosty
– Talc as first ingredients
