This palette is pricey, but I am glad I chose to buy it. The shadows are smooth and buttery and an absolute dream to work with. This is my first Natasha Denona palette but I’m so happy with it I will definitely purchase more from the brand.

I fell in love with the colors of this palette from the first time I saw a beauty guru use it on youtube. The colors are so different from anything else, and they are all matte. Being 57 years old, glitter and shine are out for me. Anyway, I ordered the palette from Sephora and waited impatiently for it to arrive. It was worth the wait, I can’t get enough of it. The colors are even more beautiful in person. They can be a bit powdery and sometimes I tap off the brush but that’s the only “negative” I can think of. The colors blend beautifully, the payoff is excellent. One thing I do to make any eyeshadow blend easily is use primer, setting powder and a layer of one of the light colors all over the lid. Then goes the darker colors and they blend easily with this technique. I highly recommend this palette for your eyeshadow collection.

I have a love/hate relationship with this pallette. Sometimes I will do a look and it is the best my eyes have ever looked. Other times, despite finding the best method to apply this pigment, it does not go on how I want it to. For me, the best way to apply the top row shades is sparingly and patted with a packer brush very slowly building. When I bought this, I thought I would never use the blue but it actually is a flattering liner shade on me. I was excited about Savannah but I don’t like the color on. The second and third row are easier to work with. I am surprised that I wear lotus as often as I do. I can even make that work as a stand alone shade. What I really like about these particular mattes is that they do not look flat or chalky on. They also have a natural quality in terms of the finish that lets me play with color more without it being overwhelming. Tribe, the bright red shade is actually wearable during the day without it being over the top. I like that there is a warm and a cool base shade but I would prefer a lighter one. I have to pack it on the areas I want to highlight for either to do it’s job. In this pallette I really would liked to have seen a bone or white. Masai, the deep magenta is what caused me to acrually pick the pallette up. It was like a maybe, and that put me over the top because it reminded me of MAC Hepcat and I thought it would be awesome in a ND formula. It did not disappoint. I love it as a crease, outer corner shade, even as a liner. I would like to see ND come out with one of her smaller pallettes (like the Camel one) with just essential shimmers when I want to amp things up a bit. All in all, this pallette is not beginner friendly. I get the bad youtube reviews from non actual artists. It has taken a crapton of experimenting with different methods to get some of the shades, particularly the top row to work. I get why it would not make a good First Impressions or Unboxing video.

Pros:
Easy to diffuse.
Interesting color story.
A better version of subculture.
Fata morgana is pigmented and blends out nicely.
Wears nicely for 8 hrs.
All the neutrals work amazing.
Stone is unique blue grey.
Cons:
Tamarind….is a muted Edge from subculture it also presents the same problem too. Meaning that it will look darker when you use it over a sticky base or when blending with a little bit of pressure you need to press this shade on in order for it not to get darker.
Rhino and savannah ……are so alike they end up looking grey with just a slightly different undertone . You need to pat these on instead of sweeping them in order for them to look like they do on pan.
Overall thoughts:
This was my first natasha denona palette and was underwhelmed its not terrible but its not mind blowing. It is however a much better version of subculture, though a bit more muted. But as previous user has said its not as good as viseart dark mattes
..I will experiment more with it since I did love all the other shades that werent in my cons. The mattes are finely milled and look smooth once on the eye and the blend for these shades is amazing…..final thoughts are…. i own viseart dark mattes and prefer viseart to the safari palette…. Its more intense and formula is better than safari. But safari is a way much better subculture and if you like the color story and subdued colors from subculture i think the price is a justifiable upgrade.

I got it in my head that I really wanted a Natasha Denona palette. And I love mattes. I have a small palette of shimmers by her and while beautiful, the glitter fall out is crazy. So when I saw this come out, I thought this is my palette. So I didn’t look too carefully and got it.
The packaging is the same as the tropic palette. A sturdy plastic with magnetic closure and the back can prop up wherever the put it. Very nice.
The matte formula swatches quite smoothly. They feel thick and heavy and have a lot of pigment. On the eye, they are patchy and a beast to work with. These shades are so pigmented and so thick that you need a very light hand and a fluffy bush and very lightly apply/blend. You can delicately build. But the second you pack on a darker shade and build that way, you get a bald spot. And when you try to pack onto the bald patchy spot, nothing sticks! So then you have this bald spot and way too much eyeshadow on the rest of your eye.
And then the muddiness. Curses. So you very delicately blend with your Wayne Goss brushes for ten minutes with the first shade, and then get brave and try to add a second color. And you get mud. The shades blur together, you cannot see the distinct shadows. Or they don’t blend together at all and you get a harsh line between them. So then you pack on a light shade on the lid hoping it will cover up your muddy messy crease. The application process is the most frustrating experience. It makes me want to chuck my brushes at the wall.
The shades are two tones. They are either light or medium. There are no super dark shades. Tamarind and Lotus can be transition shades. But because of the monotone quality you can really only use two shades at a time. And if I try to use the darkest brown as a liner/outer v, it turns muddy.
And then there are the shades. As I sat down with this palette and starting looking at my collection I nearly face palmed. I found a very very good dupe for most of this palette. Viseart Dark Mattes. It has 8 dupes in it. 8. I’ve been trying them both and I do prefer Dark Mattes. I also have dupes for the rest of this palette. At first I thought I’d keep this palette, even after all that, but the more I use it the more I hate the application of theseshadows. My dupes are: Viseart Dark Mattes, Sydney Grace Embrace (Lotus), Camel, and Summer Magic, and ColourPop Lucky you. I posted pictures of my dupes in the photos for this product. I believe ND is on the left/bottom, but it’s been a while since I took the pictures and they are that close.
I’ve seen a lot of positive reviews. And in the comments of those reviews I see people saying that people who can’t use this palette either have bad brushes or bad technique or aren’t priming right. So for informational purposes, I typically prime my eyes and don’t set my primer. With this palette I tried primer and concealer and tried setting and not setting. I used Wayne Goss or Sonia G brushes. Sonia G made the patchy mess because they are all so dense.
But if you are one of the lucky ones and this palette works for you, awesome. I just can’t recommend it. There are too many much easier formulas to work with. Get Dark Mattes instead.
