I am here today to tell you about a cheaper, prettier alternative to the Z Palette for you depotting fanatics. There is this small shop on Etsy. The owner makes these fantastic, one-of-a-kind magnetic palettes in which to depot your makeup. She posts a handful of new palettes every week. Each is its own unique design and when it’s gone, it’s gone. Sometimes there are no palettes in stock when you go to the shop, but she does do custom orders as well and she is willing to send you a whole whack of designs to choose from. If you like her Facebook page, you can get notifications for the new palettes when they come out, and you can also get previews of upcoming designs for the month.
The 4X6 MiniMint is the largest size the shop carries. It is equivalent to the Medium Z Palette. She also carries a 4X4 (equivalent to Small Z Palette), and a mini 3X3 square that can fit easily in a clutch bag. They are made of cardboard, acrylic, foam, and water-resistant paper (don’t worry if you splash them, but don’t submerge them either). They feature a simple but effective magnetic closure.
These palettes are significantly cheaper than the Z Palette. Of course, they don’t come quite as large as the Z Palette, but I did the math and even if I have to buy more MiniMints rather than fewer Z Palettes, I am still saving money. However, MiniMint does not have a “domed” style like Z Palette, so they cannot hold very thick or “baked” products. The other thing you might like more about Z Palette is the clear lid. With MiniMint, you need a better memory of what is in each container because you can’t see the products. If that bugs you, this isn’t the palette for you. On the plus side, the 4X6 palette is extremely lightweight and portable, and I have found all of these palettes to be very well made and of high quality.
Finally, the customer service is top notch. Jenny (the shop owner) packages each product very professionally and ships it promptly. You feel like you are opening a present when it arrives. She adds a personalized note on the receipt, and she has always thrown in a gift with purchase. She includes stickers to put on the back of your round pans (some pretty, some plain), and sometimes there’s something extra too, like a little sample product. She also includes stamp cards so after you buy 10 palettes, you can get one free! How cool is that? 🙂 Finally, she is very communicative with her customers and very accommodating. If you see a “preview” design on her Facebook page, you can call dibs and she will hold it for you once it is made. As I mentioned, she also takes custom orders. I also messaged her to request combined shipping to save a little money. Since only a few palettes come out at a time, if you buy one and it ships, then two days later you see another one you like, it sucks to pay shipping again. I knew I would need one more palette for my stash, so Jenny was willing to hold onto my purchase until I found another palette I loved and ship them together. Since she is in the US and I am in Canada, that saved me quite a bit.
I have four of these 4X6 palettes now. So to give you an idea of capacity, here’s what’s in each of them. As you can see, you can fit quite a bit:
1) Blush Palette: 1 E.L.F. blush, 1 theBalm Instain blush, 1 Tarte Amazonian Clay Blush, 1 Elizabeth Arden Color Intrigue Bronzing Powder Duo (possibly d/c), 1 deluxe mini Tarte Park Avenue Princess Bronzer (from value set), 1 mini Too Faced Love Flush blush (heart-shaped, from value set).
2) Blush Palette: 2 NARS Blush, 1 theBalm Instain Blush, 1 Almay powder blush (d/c rectangle pan), 1 Mary Kay Mineral blush (rectangle pan), 1 mini Too Faced Love Flush Blush (heart-shaped, from value set)
3) Eye Palette: Too Faced Natural Eye Palette, 1 trio from Too Faced Smoky Eye Palette, 2 Benefit Velvet Eyeshadow (square pans, d/c), 3 Urban Decay (square pans, from L/E Get Baked Palette), 2 Covergirl Eye Enhancers, room for one more standard square pan
4) Eye Palette: 2 trios from Too Faced Smoky Eye Palette, 1 Wet n’ Wild Single (d/c round pan), 1 Urban decay single, 2 MAC singles, 1 Pixi Single (large round pan), 1 Sephora Collection single, 1 mini Sephora collection single, Almay Bring out the Blues trio, 1 Benefit Velvet Eyeshadow (d/c, square pan), 3 L/E Kevin Murphy Eyeshadows (round pans, slightly smaller than MAC)
If you visit the shop page there is additional sizing information and more pictures. And keeping in mind that it is equivalent to the medium Z Palette, you can also use the sizing info available on Z Palette’s website.
Overall, I’ve loved my experience shopping from this store and I adore my gorgeous palettes. Depotting has been a bit tricky but a lot of fun. If you’re thinking of trying it out, I highly recommend minimintpalette on etsy.com.
