I got this palette on sale for $11.35; it is regularly sold for $14.99. This kit is part of Maybelline’s holiday 2015 line. There is also a Smoky version available, but this review is for the Gilded in Gold Palette.
The kit packs four shimmery brown/bronze family eye shadows in a quad on one sliding side with a double ended sponge applicator, a blush with a small brush on the other sliding side and then underneath in a pan, a large powder highlighter, square powder puff, jumbo black pencil eyeliner pencil and bright red lipgloss.
The included eye shadows are pretty: a deeper brown, two bronze-leaning light and medium browns, and a pearly but wearable pale pink. All the shades have shimmer (but aren’t total glitter bombs) and are warm-toned. The quality of the powder is nice – smooth with little fallout – but the pigmentation is on the meh side, typical of many Maybelline eye shadows. Same issue with the blush, which is a flattering rosy shade (seemingly neutral-toned) but isn’t pigmented in such a way that it’s built to stay more than a couple hours. All the pressed powders included are blendable, and finely milled. The highlighter is a lovely shade with gold twinkles blended in but a little more of a glittery rather than candlelit glow once on the skin. All the included application tools are short-lived for use or not ideal but that’s sort of to be expected.
In my opinion, the black liner and bold lip color tube are “throwaway” items, added to purportedly complete the “Gilded in Gold” holiday makeup look but really just as space fillers. Both look cheap in packaging and on. I didn’t/wouldn’t use either, because I have better versions of both things already.
That’s sort of the issue with this palette, actually, and the reason I only rate it average. While the packaging is pretty and sleek, especially considering how many different makeup items are packed into the kit, everything feels a bit like a retread. This would be a great starter kit for like a 15 year old girl who has never had any makeup before (especially if you throw in a mascara) but for anyone who already has a stocked drawer, you’re likely repeating yourself with this purchase and it will end up relegated to the back of said drawer. Just my two cents.
