I love trying new beauty products, but I hate clutter and waste, which makes the idea of most subscription services pretty unappealing. When I found out about beautyDNA, however, it sounded perfect. One beauty product a month tailored specifically to your needs based on an extensive questionnaire? Sign me up!
I’ve been subscribed for almost year and have to say I’m pretty impressed. Every single product I’ve been sent has been something I will use, and with the exception of one Dr. Brandt face cream, I’ve been really happy with the quality of the products and how they play with my skin. The brands they’ve sent me are generally pretty well known (I’ve received products from companies like Jurlique, MoroccanOil, Drunk Elephant, Dr. Brandt, and Murad) and I’ve never gotten the same product twice, or even received a product from the same brand twice, yet.
Even though $25 a month may seem a little steep for a subscription box, I feel it’s worth it because BeautyDNA is actually tailored to you whereas other subscription boxes aren’t (even if they market themselves as such.) And, you can change your questionnaire anytime what you want (e.g., have too many face creams? de-select it in the questionnaire!) Because of this, I feel like I’m getting a lot more value than I would from a $10 subscription box because I’m the type of person who would rather have one full-size product that I’m definitely going to use than a bunch of samples I may or may not like and feel guilty for not using up. The product you get is usually always significantly more than $25 retail and if it isn’t, they’ll send you an extra product. For example, one month BeautyDNA sent me a Moroccan oil shampoo, but since it retails for $24, I also got a Moroccanoil conditioner in my box. They also sent me a $200 face cream once, so…yay? Another thing I like is that Beauty DNA never sends me the same kind of product in a row. For example, if I get shampoo one month, they seem to wait at least three months before sending me another shampoo, so I think their algorithm controls for frequency as well as product type.
I do have a few criticisms: I wish BeautyDNA offered more than just skincare and haircare, but they have no plans to. Also, they have a terrible online/social presence and no e-commerce platform to speak of, which seems odd for a beauty subscription company competing in the current beauty marketplace. Their lack of social presence also makes me feel like their business might be failing, or that they aren’t concerned about making their product better.
I’ve unsubscribed for now because I don’t really need to add to my stash, but I can see myself resubscribing in the future. By that point, I hope BeautyDNA has upped their game a bit.
UPDATE: It’s been two months since I cancelled and I’ve received two more subscription boxes. BeautyDNA won’t reply to my emails and I can’t seem to remove my payment information from their website. I’m docking another lippie for very poor customer service.
