Quality moisturizer but there are still a lot of good products with much lower price than this one.

I have been using this Sulwhasoo Balancing Emulsion for 2-3 years and it is part of my daily regime and has transformed my 53-year-old skin. Korean and Japanese skin care is the best in the world and so I started to experiment with some of their brands several years ago. The Korean skin regimes are always multi-step, sometimes up to 10 different products! I have a less involved skincare routine but it has really transformed my skin. This Balancing Emulsion is part of the regime and I use it morning and night. As with all of the Sulwhasoo products, you put a small amount in your palm and pat it onto your skin, it is a light, creamy emulsion that smells slightly herbal and absorbs nicely. Please see my other Sulwhasoo reviews for the Serum & Balancing Water. I don’t use only Sulwashoo products; my moisturizer is NIA24 and my cleanser is Cetaphil. I always travel with the products too, I buy the trail sets on eBay or Amazon, they are inexpensive and perfect for travel. Also, I’ve noticed that the Sulwhasoo website often has great free samples and specials, so check it out before you buy at your local store.

This is a preliminary review – I have been using this product for about 5 days in conjunction with the Essential Balancing Water.
What really impresses me above all with this product is how it actually absorbs in the skin and hydrates/moisturizes oily skin without leading to clogged pores. For people with oily skin, this is always a challenge. Most moisturizes and even serums sit on my face without fully absorbing, never absorbing to the point of reversing dry skin areas, or they are too heavy/intense for daytime use. This emulsion does those things without causing any irritation or comedones.
Because my skin is oily, I only use this at night, every other night (I use a more intense regimen in between) after applying the Essential Balancing Water (the water product is enough by itself for daytime moisturizing for me). These 2 leave my skin supple, soft, glowing, slightly firmed, and younger looking.
Pros:
Moisturizing/hydrating without clogging pores or oil production
Wonderful calming and relaxing fresh ginger scent that lingers until fully absorbed
Cons:

The only product I would scrimp and buy anyway even without my mom.
HG. It does not have parabens.
I tried other Korean moisturizers, but this one fit me the best. It really calms and soothes my skin like no other. Slight herbal scent. Very moisturizing. I feel pampered when I put it on every night. Millenials might not like it because it may be reminiscent of granny.
Sulwhasoo salespeople of course would tell you to use in conjunction with the balancing water. However I used in conjunction with other toners too.
No idea what’s in it really aside from knowing that it is based on Korean traditional medicine and herbs. It is also THE Korean traditional skincare line. They were the first ones to come up with it. Again Sulwhasoo is a cosmetic line under the Amore Pacific Corporation.
On packaging, I think it is supposed to be reminiscent of the celadon vases while being shaped like the regular round cylindrical cosmetics bottles. All glass with a plastic twist cap. Pretty sturdy as it withstood two falls from my vanity and then… er I trip over it often and then it rolls on the bamboo wood flooring. But still ok!
Price point. I think it’s worth it? I’ve spent $ on 30something dollar lotions and haven’t really noticed a difference between that and the lower ranges. I think the other Korean ones momma used just felt good? However they were quite unremarkable.
Despite being young and hesitant about spending money on rich skincare (because of age), I definitely got a great return on the investment. (63,000 won at Lotte Dept. Store and also 60something dollars in US too).
Great for people over middle age!!!
Despite my firm belief in the law of diminishing returns and how I don’t necessarily believe in the salespeople saying “for all ages,” I definitely do feel and notice a difference using this product vs. another despite it being targetting older people (at least gonna be forty soon+).
So HG!
I’ve used up all my momma’s samples of Sulwhasoo both the emulsion and the balancing water and waited forever till I was gifted the emulsion by my cousin during a visit to Korea.
Highly highly recommend.
No idea if the promotion is still going on but at Bergdorf Goodman they were giving away gift certificates depending on how much sulwhasoo products you bought. A pretty good deal imo.

I have 2 15ml sample size bottle . When i have oily skin, it’s been too much. Yes it easily absorbed but I feel greasy and dirty all day long. So I only use it on my eye area (and it’s moisture enough).
Later, my skin being so dry it hurts. Then I start to use it again, together with balancing water. In few days my skin feels a lot way better. And when I used it for night time, only balancing water and emulsion, my skin became so wonderful in the morning.
Should I buy it again? I don’t know yet. But if my skin staying on dry side, I definitely will

$60 USD for 4.7oz. – I think you can only buy this line in the US at either Neiman Marcus (online) or Bergdorf Goodman. I bought the entire set (including the serum, water, emulsion, and creams) after I saw my SIL’s glowing skin. I’d been using CD forever and was looking around for something different, and this was it. The line’s based on Korean herbal medicine, so there’s an herbal underlying scent and ginseng – which I love. I hate the perfumey scents that other skincare lines always add, but I find the very light herbal scent soothing and therapeutic. the product is in a heavier bottle that feels expensive and looks wonderful on my dressing table.
The emulsion has a very light texture and on its own doesn’t provide enough moisture for my winter skin, but I use it with the serum and the balancing water for day (and add a cream at night). It absorbs right into my skin and doesn’t leave any oily residue, either. My skin can get pretty sensitive but so far, no adverse reactions or breakouts. My one complaint on the emulsion is that you have to shake it out of the bottle and it’s hard to control the amount that comes out.
My skin’s normally combination, tending to be more oily but in the winter, it acts crazy dry, developing little flakes under my makeup. But in combination with the all products, my skin looks very soft and supple, even in the middle of the winter!!

Great day moisturizer for me. It moisturizes great but not too greasy. The scent is lovely. It has a little bit of herbal smell but is not over powering. I use it with balancing water in the am and I put on sunscreen on after. I just wish it had a pump bottle to make it easier to use. The price is not bad since you’re getting 125 ml.

I bought a Sulwhasoo set tax free in Seoul plus on a 25% discount. Still expensive but I bit the bullet. It had the First Care Serum, Balancing Water, Balancing Emulsion, Eye Cream and Ginseng Cream.
I have been using this stuff for 3 weeks and I really do see a difference in my skin. I have dry skin with occasional hormonal acne, some fine lines and some unevennes in color. These products have improved the softness and the dewyness of my skin. I need less foundation than before (just tinted moisturizer)
I use the First Care Serum, Balancing Water, Balancing emulsion 2x a day. I am not sure all these steps are useful or necessary but the end result is nicely hydrating. The emulsion is a light, not too liquid but not cream moisturizer. I normally use much heavier stuff for my dry skin but with the balancing water, this is enough for me in the a.m. I was very surprised at how hydrating this line is. At night I add richer stuff on.
Korean skincare usually involves more steps and time than Western skincare. You may see this as a “hassle” or relish the meditative aspect. I enjoy taking a few extra minutes for my skincare, but I believe you can just layer the products as well without waiting too much in between. The smell also makes a difference for me. A very light scent is found in all producrs (stronger in the Ginseng cream) that only lasts a few seconds so you don’t keep smelling it. Just enough to refresh and calm your mind at the same time. I might be addicted to the smell. Or Sulwhasoo in general.
Packaging is gorgeous. Dates on the product are manifacturing dates, not expiration dates.
Cons: Expensive.

I love this emulsion. The texture is light and easy to apply but it will take a little while to dry. The scent is just like the balancing water and it makes me feel fresh and calm. This emulsion is hydrated and works for my oily acne prone skin. Using this with cleansing oil, cleansing foam, first care serum and balancing water does help to control my oily t-zone and acne. When I get tired or see no result with the one I’m trying I will return to this line to give me a healthy glow and put my skin back under control.

I feel bad for bringing down the rating here, but truthfully this gave me a terrible break out. Granted, it’s not meant for my skin type (or age bracket), but I’ve read reviews from other acne-prone people who loved it so I was crossing my fingers. I did love the herbal smell though, and the texture was wonderful. I’ll definitely come back to this line if my skin becomes dehydrated with age.
