Olay(used to be called Oil of Olay/Ulan/Olaz among others) is a brand owned by Proctor and Gamble who also unbeknownst to many people also own the luxury Japanese skin care line SK-II.
Olay have several sub-brands, most of them containing repeated formulas throughout the entire Olay line from top to bottom subbrands. The top subbrand is ProX, marketed towards Dermatologist use, Much older women and the serious person into anti-aging. The 2nd subrand at the top would be Luminous(used to be called Definity) under that you have Regenerist, Total Effects, Complete and so on.
From looking at the ingredient listings on the Olay Regenerist Luminous Collection, it is the only subbrand out of the entirety of Olay that uses not only Niacinamide(Vitamin B3 which shows up repeatedly in all of Olay’s skin care collections) but also uses an interesting ingredient called Acetyl Glucosamine which research has shown that in conjunction with Niacinamide is an effective duo for the treatment and prevention of hyperpigmentation, age spots, sun spots, post inflammatory pigmentation you name it.
I have gone through 2 jars of this in the past 4 months and I must say the results while subtle, continuous use of the cream has yielded visible results. I find the cream takes too long to be effective, however all this depends on how much pigmentation and dark spots one has, I have several mottled pigmented areas all over my face.
The texture of the product is not that of a traditional cream, like most creams from Olay and any powerhouse company that can afford to put money into the development of a good texture, this is more of a cream that dries down to an almost satin matte finish. I have a combination dry skin that is left wanting a bit more oomph in the moisture department from this cream. Perhaps that is why this cream is recommended to be used following a serum and booster essence, all of which dare I say it is a complete waste of money as they all contain the exact same ingredients. A dimethicone base, niacinamide and acetyl glucosamine in an efficacious amount and a scattering of Vitamin E Tocepherol and Panthenol.
The price is slightly bordering on premium and I would only buy this cream at half price. The packaging is very shiny and silver but like most jars you simply take out the quantity which you need and please use a spatula or cotton tip. Not your fingers!
I am going to go back to my powerhouse of Hydroquinone and Tretinoin to fight pigmentation problems that I have, as these two ingredients have the most well documented research stating their effectiveness for this problem of pigmentation etc.
I find Olay needs to stop creating too many confusing sub brands, and with their billions and billions of investment each year into skin care research need to come up with formulas that use other ingredients, not just Niacinamide.
The fantastic team at Beautypedia have also recognised this, for a billion dollar company to product or recycle the same formulas time and time again in different packaging and different names etc, you wonder what theses Olay scientists are really doing up there in Cincinnati, OHIO.
Any purchase from Olay from me from now on will solely be the classic pink beauty fluid for which they are most famously known for, their excellent range of well formulated gentle water soluble cleansers(OLAY CLEAN foaming cleanser, used to be Foaming Face wash for sensitive skin) and a nice selection of sunscreens with SPF 30.
If you are on a budget and want to try a well formulated skin lightening/brightening product that is easily found within any drugstore or pharmacy at a somewhat decent price point, please give Olay Regenerist Luminous Tone Perfecting Cream a try.
If you are curious about Olay in general please purchase from the Olay Luminous collection only, as you get more bang for your buck. Olay’s most famous cream to date has been their Regenerist cream, comes in a red tub and looks strikingly similar to SK-II packaging. That cream has won several awards and countless mentions in magazines and online blog etc. However the only ingredient making a difference in that very cream is Niacinamide which is easily found at a lesser price point in their Total Effects line.
If there is a lesson to be learned here people it is to always always always read an ingredient listing as you may be paying for a formula that is repeated, overpriced, harmful or downright full of nothing significant for skin. As consumers we have the right to know what we are paying for!

I bought this for my daughter to get rid of some facial sun spots & decided to try it. I loved it so much that I bought my own jar! I am 60 & have dry & sensitive skin.Olay products are a favorite & I am especially enamored with this one. From day one it immediately brightened & moisturized my skin. I used it at night & my skin was still glowing in the morning! I don’t have any problems with skin tone, etc, but just using it as a moisturizer is wonderful! I use it in the morning under sunscreen & at night by itself.

I agree with the other comments. This cream feels oddly heavy, and not in a good way. My skin feels suffocated with this cream. It doesn’t sink in, and it peels. This also broke me out!
I’m really glad I bought the cheap travel size at Target and didn’t waste more money. I LOVE the Luminous Tone serum–but the cream is a huge fail.

what a waste of money!!! this stuff does not absorb, but stays on top of the skin, and then pills. i absolutely feel ripped off. does it moisturize? it never stays on my skin long enough to find out!!!!

I tried only a good sized sample of this moisturizer, so I can’t speak to the long term benefits of this cream, but I quite liked it for a few temporary advantages. I applied it only during the daytime, atop my typical serum (currently a Shu Uemura), and it felt very comfortable, not stinging, not a heavy fragrance, and definitely added an instant (if temporary) glow to my skin. It wore very well beneath my foundation and gave a more luminous (but not oily/greasy) look to my skin. My foundation didn’t last as long over this, but had I touched up my powder it would have been fie. I’m unsure though if it caused me a few blemishes, or if it was diet/lack of water related, so I’m hesitant to say that it entirely agreed with my sensitive skin. I also didn’t use it long enough to see if it did fade dark spots (in 8 weeks as it claims to do). It did hydrate well enough though (and it is winter in a cold climate for me at the moment), and gave a pretty look to the skin.

It’s ok. It works best with a thin layer over skin that isn’t already super dry. I notice that I get flaky spots with this one if worn overnight. It feels nice under makeup, though, so I plan to use it once the weather warms up in the spring and I don’t need a ton of moisture like in the winter. Probably won’t rebuy it, since I feel like there are other moisturizers out there with better texture, packaging, and moisturizing properties than this, but I won’t toss it out.

Honestly this stuff is just not my favorite. It says it’s a moisturizer but my skin still felt dry after using it. I think in part that’s because of the mattifying effect, which I didn’t really care for. I think a little shine is good on my skin, and instead my face ended up looking dull right after I applied this moisturizer.

I think I gave this cream a fair shake….and i really didn’t like it.
I’m not sure what others are talking about–mattifying?? this cream was the complete opossite for me??! After MANY nights…I would try and use and and it would just feel…heavy..AND I have used heavy creams before–this is a weird heavy. My pores literally felt like they were being suffocated. I wouldn’t be able to sleep and when I did leave it on (for the “tone perfecting benefits..”) I didn’t feel comfortable.
After a couple months, I did NOT notice any improvement regarding my tone at all…none of my dark spots were lightened. I also felt like my skin would break out a bit. As far as drug store products go, I felt this was a waste of money since it didn’t do a thing for me. Hydration?? Pssh, yeah right!!! Tone perfecting??? My foot!!! I don’t know why, but many Olay products seem to be a big let down for me.
I think –for me, personally–that plain old Ponds Clarant B3 in either Normal to Oily(for Mattifying and day use) or the Normal to Dry(for night time use) worked a hell of a lot better for me!!! And it was half the price of this particular Olay product too!! It also lightened my dark marks up a lot whereas Olay Tone perfecting did not.
Anyways—so I give it 2 thumbs down. Maybe it works better for Normal to Dry skins better, but my Normal to Oily skin it did not work out for. And this is pretty rare…I hardly give 1 lippie…even if I didn’t like something.
I think they only thing I liked about this cream was the smell…it smelled good.
But other then that, Better luck next time Olay….
**sigh….I really wish I hadn’t bought this and wasted more then $20 on it.

My skin tends to be a bit dry, and this moisturizer was not effective for me at all. The fragrance was a bit overwhelming. I enjoyed the mattifying effect, the way it looked and felt on my skin directly after application, and it seemed to be aiding in exfoliation, although I am not totally sure about that. But the longer i had it on my face, the drier it felt. I tried putting it on before bed and ended up getting up, washing it off, and using another lotion before I could go to sleep.
