This sponge sounded like a dream come true. First of all, it is the most darling sparkly purple color! It is said to not soak up foundation, limit germs, work just as well as other makeup sponges, last longer, they donate to coral reefs and to top it off? It’s a Canadian company (proud Canadian here!) So after all of these selling points, I was sold, and I put in an order pre-official launch.
The sponge itself is essentially a makeup sponge, with a coating of silicone on most of it (save for the bottom of the teardrop shape), which allows water to enter into the sponge and expand like a regular makeup sponge would. It’s as if the Silisponge (remember that beauty craze?!) and Beauty Blender made a baby. The silicone prevents the sponge from absorbing foundation, and yet you still get the bounciness of a sponge to dab on makeup, less waste, more coverage and great finish. The coating makes the sponge more robust. I have claws for nails, so regular sponges get destroyed pretty easily, and the silicone makes this sponge more hardy. They say that you can use the non-silicone covered part of the sponge like a regular sponge, to finish off your makeup application.
I agree with most of their claims but we need to consider how we intend to use this tool. If you liked using a sponge to apply makeup due to the fact that it does take off some of the excess foundation for a softer/lighter application, then this won’t do that. One makeup technique is to apply your foundation and then dab the sponge around to soften and take the edge off of the application; with this sponge, it will just spread the foundation more without taking anything off. If I were to use the non-silicone part of the sponge to do this, then, it defeats the purpose of the silicone properties.
There are also some downsides to this design. The part that is not covered in silicone is quite small, therefore water gets in easily enough, but it takes much longer to dry. My worry is that the water is not evaporating fast enough and gets trapped inside, possibly creating new germs. Not to mention, if makeup gets inside the sponge from the non-silicone part, it will be much harder to clean the core of the sponge clean since the “opening” is so small. Which leads me to the fact that I can’t seem to get my sponge back to it’s original beautiful color. The foundation doesn’t absorb into the core of the sponge, but it seems to get stuck in the silicone. The silicone layer is not a thick hard layer, it is a coating, and foundation gets stuck in the teeny tiny crevices when it expands and shrinks. I haven’t been able to get it to Day 1 clean. You also have to be careful when squeezing the water out of the sponge. You need to direct the water out through the bottom of the sponge, to prevent damaging the silicone part. If you are not careful, it will pierce through or disfigure the silicone part if you squeeze it any which way.
So, while there are benefits to the sponge, there are also some caveats. Not to be dramatic, but it almost feels like a movie where someone has this dream of becoming something, and once they do, they realize that there is a dark side that comes along with it, and life is not just champagne and roses. I think its important to consider how you use your sponge and if you’re willing to put a little more effort into caring for your sponge. I believe the pros mostly outweigh the cons, so I would recommend giving it a try if it suits your needs. The price is the same as a Beauty Blender, but it should last you longer if you care for it properly.

I love using beauty sponges …. Beauty Blender and Real Techniques are always in my makeup case, however, I saw Tati’s Super Sponge review on YOUTUBE and really wanted a Super Sponge …. I pre-ordered months ago and my sponge was delivered yesterday and I could not be any happier … there is no comparison as the Super Sponge blows away all the rest of my sponges. I pre-ordered another two sponges today as I am getting rid of my Beauty Blenders and Real Techniques …. again no comparison in my opinion. What I find is that Super Sponge truly works better for me in that my foundation and even concealer looks flawless …. I always have issue in that my foundation looks cakey or not as smooth, but with Super Sponge it truly helps foundation and concealer looks skin-like …. I found that the foundation did not transfer onto my sponge but just on my skin ….. at first I thought that perhaps my Super Sponge had absorbed my foundation but then I looked at the sponge and it had nothing on it and then I looked at my skin and noticed that I did have foundation on as my discolorations were covered …. this is how smooth my application went on with the Super Sponge because I could not detect traces of foundation …. I immediately did a second round of foundation, which is something I never do as then I would truly have a cake-face, and once again even with a second layer of foundation, my face was flawless, seamless and it really looked like I had nothing on. I highly recommend the Super Sponge and I hope that it becomes more readily available and soon!!!!! I do believe that there is a difference between using sponges or brushes depending if you are looking for a more sheer to full coverage, and I find that Super Sponge works so well if you are looking for your foundation to look more lighter.

My Experience: I purchased this makeup sponge after I saw a beauty guru on YouTube give it a very positive review. My total came to be about $25 for the sponge (including shipping) on the SuperSponge website, I will admit that that price is rather steep for just one makeup sponge.
As soon as I received it in the mail I had to try it out since I was still a little skeptical about it. I applied a little bit of water to it, like I usually do, and it expanded like a regular sponge. After that I placed a small dollop of foundation on the sponge and began to blend it on my face. I noticed that I could use way less product since the sponge didn’t absorb any of it, and even though I used less it made my foundation and concealer look a lot more full coverage! A was a little afraid that because it didn’t absorb any product that it would make my foundation and concealer cakey or clumpy, but thankfully it didn’t and it looked just as good as a regular sponge. In the SuperSponge package it included a silicone scrubbie to clean the sponge with. I decided to try it out on the sponge and it actually did a very deep clean and cleared all the product off of the sponge.
Pros: Doesn’t absorb product, Easier to clean, Will save you product and money. Doesn’t make foundation or concealer look cakey, Gives your foundation and concealer a more “full coverage” look.
Cons: Expensive.
Conclusion: I think this product is a good investment especially if you use foundation and concealer on a daily basis, since it will save you a lot of product and by doing that save you money as well.
