The Miller Puff is a washable powder puff that is affordable, (typically under $10). I first started using them back in 1998 and there is nothing like it the industry then and now. I have about 60 Miller Puffs in my kit. And about 200 worn out ones at home that I haven’t thrown away… yet. I will explain why later below.
They come in a huge selection and variety of solid colours, 2-sided colours, 2-sided pattern prints, and in 2-sided animal prints. The 2-sided animal and patterned print puffs are solid coloured on the other side. The animal print puffs are velour on the animal print side and a soft fabric on the other, (I don’t work in wardrobe, so I don’t know the names of most specific fabrics, all I know it’s very soft.) They are just under 10 cm across, so they are the industry sized standard for powder puffs. Also with the different colours and prints, you can very easily from a distance identify which actor bag belongs to who, especially on shows that have a huge number of cast, plus sometimes actor bags don’t have a continuity pic inside of them.
I find that you get a better finish and better control over the amount of powder that you use with a puff versus a brush. If not used correctly, powder brushes leave a very light dusting of powder everywhere like in the hair, on wardrobe, on lip gloss, on groomed brows, and on the light fuzzy peach hairs by the ear and jaw bone areas. Puffs don’t do that when used correctly. For example puffs can be easily shaped with your fingers to stipple powder into small areas without disturbing other make-ups such as above the lip area. You can also wrap a blot paper on the edge of a puff and blot, flip the puff over and use the other side of the blot paper to blot another area.
For the washing part. The manufacturer says to stick a pin the centre and launder that way. Hard experience has taught me otherwise, Hence the 200 worn out puffs. The best way is to use medium sized smoothed pinhead safety pins. These types of safety pins can only be purchased through wardrobe supply places or fabric supply shops, plus they won’t rust like some cheaply made ones. (Ordinary safety pins are roughened around the pinhead, which will pull and eventually fray the outer fabric and will pull the inner material through the pin hole. Again the 200… well you get the idea.)
Okay. So you take your 4 medium sized smoothed safety pins and pin them about 1/2 cm away from the edge, opposite from each other like the 4 directions on a compass. The reason you pin the puffs in this manner is to prevent the inner material from bunching up in the middle of the puff during the laundering process, and it is a very time consuming and laborious process to unravel the material to make it flat again if not pinned in this way. Next you place them in a delicates bag, wash in warm water with your usually laundry detergent on the gentle cycle. DO NOT USE bleach, hot water or the regular wash cycle, as this will over a short period of time deteriorate the inner material of the puff. (No your puff will not come apart at the edges, but it will now become a nice thin cleaning pad. Again the hard lessons learned here.) Next place the bag in the dryer with a fabric softener sheet and dry on Medium heat. Next pull the pins and you’re done.
The next question you’re probably having is how often? For me I wait until I have about 40 puffs ready to be washed. For the lay person, assuming they keep their make-up and tools cleaned and sanitized on a daily basis, I say wash your puff at least once a week. Any more than that and the velour will start to form hard spots from the combination of powder, foundation and oil /sweat being built up.
With this cleaning method your puffs should last 5+ years perhaps even longer. For me as a Pro, I launder them much more frequently so for me they last about 3 years on average, sometimes longer depending on how slow the industry is etc.
Okay, back to the 200 worn out puffs I have. Now they’re all cleaning pads. They’re great as an eraser for dry erase boards. I give away as many as I can to camera assistance operators for their slates. They’re a great size to wipe dust away from monitors, clean small mirrors, or to rest pens or pencils on, which are prone to rolling away on you.
Overall the Miller Puff is the only affordable, durable, and washable powder puff on the market that also feels soft on the skin which I find helps relax the person in my chair and it’s a cool conversation starter, as not too many MuA’s use them, despite how long they’ve been around.
Cheers everyone.
