I used this twice. It is difficult to use and apply eye makeup.
I will stick with my q-tip.

I’ve put off buying this product for a while…and I don’t know why. I have small, droopy, hooded eyes and I have my whole life. No matter how I tilt my head or lift the ‘hood’ while applying mascara, there is always a little that smudges up onto my lid/hood area. I finally got tired of it and bought this. I wish I bought it sooner. The shield is flexible and silicon. It is a little large for my eyes but I can make it work. It has kept the mascara off of my skin nicely. I have also used the shield at the end corners of my eye when I feel like doing a brush-free look and want a nice edge. It’s pretty easy to clean and care for so I call this a good investment.

Disclaimer: I’ve never used this as a shadow shield because I always do my eye makeup before my face makeup so that I don’t have to worry about fallout messing up my face. This review is only for the product’s use as a mascara shield.
I love this tool for applying my mascara. I have a very prominent brow bone that makes it impossible to apply mascara without getting it on the brow bone, especially if I really want to get the tips coated. In the past I used a plastic card like an old insurance card and used that to shield my brow bone from my mascara, and while that worked for not getting it on the brow bone, I would still get smudging on the lid due to my lids having a very rounded shape.
I found some mascara shields made from card stock which were curved which stopped the eyelid smudging but were not reusable. I decided to try this e.l.f. shield because it is made from silicone and can be washed. It works great. The curved shape fits my eye and i found that i can push my mascara on to my lashes and the resistance from the shield allows for a more even coating of mascara with less clumping.
The silicone material has some grip to it which keeps it in place during use but that also means that makeup really sticks to it and it gets dirty fast. You have to scrub a bit to get it clean. I clean mine with either hand soap or facial cleanser. They both work fine

I’ve had a very different experience than the previous reviewer. I bought this to use under my eyes to catch fall out. It doesn’t work for this at all. It doesn’t fit my undereye shape at all. It’s also flimsy in all the wrong ways, so it doesn’t contour itself to your undereye in a way that would catch fallout. I really wanted to love this, because it seemed like it would be so much easier than having to hold up a tissue, but this was a big disappointment.

Hooray for this tool! It’s a simple black plastic wand with a large, cut-out, fexible silicone disk designed to protect/shield the eye while applying shadows, pencils and mascara. There are two cut-outs, sort of like two half moons, one smaller than the other so that I can move the shield around for mascara, shadow, liner.
Best of all the price was 50% off bringing the tool to $1.50 US. The second great thing is the fact that the silicone feels soft, cool and smooth on the skin with no hard edges. It also sticks to the skin so I can “lift” my lashes up to apply mascara instead of using the lash curlers all the time. It washes clean with a little soap and water and is completely reversible.
What a neat idea and worth every penny. Instant love.

Flimsy and wrong for my eye shape. Totally useless for me.

I have mix feelings about this tool. I like it because the silicone protects my skin from mascara stains however the way it is cut out makes it a bit awkward for me to use because I have asian eyes. I also find the handle to be clumsy over time. This is a great idea and it works but using the business card works better for me and the silicone is hard to reach for my lower lashes because it is too thick. It only cost $3 and it prevents paper cuts from business cards but this did not work as well as I hope it would.
You can check out my first impression where I show you how I use it in my youtube video where I also share my sephora gift and I use it with the smoky extravagant mascara.

My review is for using it as a mascara “shield”. I don’t wear loose eyeshadow, so I it would seem helpful in that case but I can’t provide personal experience. 🙂
This is a cool product but I found it only works for holding against my bottom lashes… I don’t know if it’s my eyes’ shape doesn’t match the curvature or what but I prefer using a card for my upper lashes. I also wish the shield part of this wasn’t as flimsy. It makes it difficult to hold against my lids with it squishing around.

As a mascara shield its not all that for me..but as a glitter fall out/dark shadow shield put under my eye when Applying risky shades it is the best thing you could have to keep color on your lids without getting it all over your face when using loose eye shadow powders or sparkly eye shadows. And for the price you can definitely afford to add this to your makeup kit without breaking your bank account. Great tool, would def recommend

Bought this to help with applying mascara to upper lashes. My eyes are hooded so I’m forever getting mascara on the lid. The shield is too flimsy for using on the upper, but good for the lower lashes or preventing shadow fallout. Oh well

Ok when I remember to use this it works great. I use when I wear sparkly shadow to minimize the fallout landing on my cheekbones etc.

Whomever was the brainchild of E.L.F.’s Mascara Shadow Shield should be the recipient of an award. How many of us have gone through countless q-tips as we clean up our under-eye area of mascara drops and eye shadow that has filtered down? Well, no more will you have to do that. You have just saved yourself the money and time for all of those with this shield. It’s easy to use, it’s washable with each use and it’s inexpensive. What more could you ask?
You place the Shield underneath your bottom lashes and apply however many coats of mascara you want against it. No mascara hits your skin but it goes expertly on your lashes. The pay-off? No clean-up. No swabbing underneath your eyes.
Turn it sideways against your upper lid and apply your mascara again for as many coats as you’d like and none of it hits your lid. No swabbing again. The klutziest of them all can use this with beautiful results.
It’s washable. It’s made of a thick silicone that bends easily on a wand. It cost only three dollars. If something happened to it, I’d purchase it again, without a doubt. I’m one of those people that cannot apply mascara to my bottom lashes without also having raccoon eyes. My clean-up must involve at least 4 q-tips per eye. I just can’t do it. I never could. I’ve used all kinds of wands, even Clinique’s little baby wand for the bottom lashes and that didn’t do it for me. But this Shadow Shield works, and made me a happy person.
What made me the happiest was being able to apply multiple coats to my bottom lashes without the bother of clean-up. For those of you that know what I’m talking about, you eventually say to yourself, I’m done putting enough mascara on because you don’t want to clean up anymore. Now you don’t have to think about it, just use this Shield and put on as much mascara as you want to make your lashes as full and luxurious as you want without the bother.
It really does work. Thanks E.L.F.
