This a Daiso dupe of The Makeup Eraser, a makeup removing cloth that promises to remove makeup with just water. It’s also hot pink but smaller in dimension, just enough to cover your face.
People have claimed the the Makeup Eraser is nothing but a microfiber cloth and they aren’t wrong, but it and its dupes aren’t exactly like the typical microfibre cloths you can get anywhere for cleaning. These ones meant for makeup removal have a fibre pile that is longer and not looped which makes it more gentle on your face. One side has a shorter pile for harder to remove makeup or exfoliation, and one side with a longer pile for more gentle removal. The idea behind microfibre is that the many fibres allows you to more thoroughly grip on to and wipe off grime, and if it works for cleaning surfaces then why not your face?
Per the instructions I used only water(warm) and though it wasn’t suggested I thought it would be a good idea to try and steam my face a bit to loosen the makeup before I began to wipe it off. As I wiped my face, the cloth which is supposed to be wrung out got drier and drier and I found myself wanting to re-wet it so that I could more comfortably wipe with it, which I did. They tell you to clean gently, yet I find myself wanting to wipe in circles more vigorously than I’d like to in order to feel like I’m taking the makeup off, possibly due to the cloth getting drier as I used it. Using some cleanser with the cloth might solve this problem, but then that would defeat the purpose of the cloth. I used the longer side all over my face and then the shorter side to take off waterproof mascara and liner. The verdict is it indeed works for taking off makeup(unsure about tenacious sunscreens), but in order to wipe off waterproof mascara you need to go over the area quite a bit and overall there’s a lot more tugging on my facial skin than is ideal (which is none! It’s been shown that excessive tugging on skin damages your skin’s elasticity). I’d much rather just use oil cleansers than deal with all the friction, and with oils I’d be sure my sunscreen is also getting removed at the same time.
As for the quality of the Daiso dupe, well you get what you pay for. It’s about 1USD depending on where you live. A tiny tuft of the fibres have fallen out with use so far and I find that the stitching is not so tight in some areas after hand washing to clean it after my third use, although the care instructions suggest to machine wash in a laundry net so perhaps I may be being to rough when washing it. At this rate one cloth with daily use would probably last 2 months or so, but that’s still WAY better than paying $20 for the original which would also get worn out anyway.
It’s packaged in plastic wrapping and includes simple English care instructions and laundry symbols. One thing that is not included in the English instructions(but is in the Japanese) is the suggestion to not launder it together with other items(makes sense since the cloth will be incredibly soiled with makeup which can be full of oils and waxes), but to use the washing machine just for cleaning this cloth is incredibly wasteful.
Overall I would not use this as my regular makeup remover. Tugging is inevitable when you rely on friction to scrub the makeup off. I might want to use this with facial cleanser if I want to exfoliate a bit but I won’t use it for primary makeup removal. I probably won’t repurchase, but for $2(Daiso Canada price) I don’t regret buying it, and since it does work it would be good to bring along on trips in case you ever forget your makeup removing oils and such. In addition, though it’s not the intended use but since this is a microfibre cloth after all, you could also use the short pile side(dry of course) to wipe off the powder makeup on your brushes to spot clean.
