I’m torn on this one. I initially received a tube of it, either in a subscription box or as a GWP somewhere. I used up the tube and really enjoyed it – I have dry, sensitive skin, and most masks (especially mud masks) aren’t friendly to my skin. This one was different. It really did seem to smooth, detox, and moisturize; it didn’t irritate or leave me feeling tight, and my face was smooth, plump, and healthy after using it. I also love that it doesn’t have added fragrance. I liked it enough to purchase once my tube was done and that’s where my trouble comes in – I really don’t like this in a jar. It’s not hygienic and it makes the product dry out more easily and just generally not keep the proper consistency. At this price point, I expect more. I’m not typically as anti-jar as some folks are but for this type of a product it just really doesn’t work. Hopefully I’ll be able to continue to find some of the GWP size tubes, because the mask itself is really nice.

I have not had much luck with Josie Maran products, with the exception of the face oil which is a permanent part of my daily skin care. I was surprised by how much I liked this. It applies like a thick cream and dries to a hard mud mask finish. I did not think it would be possible for a mud mask to be hydrating since they tend to clean and dry you out. But after 15 minutes I washed this off and my skin was plump, hydrated and looked really polished from the exfoliating crystals. I plan to buy the full sized tub and incorporate this into my masking routine. This is an exfoliator, clay mask and hydrating mask all in one. Good for lazy days when you don’t have time to do all three.

I’ve tried this in both the unscented version and the vanilla apricot version. Both consistencies are similar, but not identical because the unscented is creamier and much more nourishing for dry skin.
I found the vanilla apricot version to be slightly thinner and much more drying for my skin. I definitely recommend sticking with the unscented version if you have dry skin, because not only is it much more pleasant (the vanilla apricot stinks to high heaven), but it will leave your skin a little smooth.
Overall, I’ve purchased mud masks and exfoliating masks that did a superior job for a mere fraction of the cost.

My biggest skin problem is dryness, so I’m always up to try new products that are targeted for dry skin. This isn’t as thick and sticky as traditional mud masks, making it very easy to apply. The consistency is almost creamy, save for exfoliating bits mixed in. The directions state to leave this on for 5-10 minutes, which isn’t long enough to allow this to dry much, but does allow the skin to really soak up beneficial ingredients. I was having one of those days where my skin just looked a bit lackluster, and this did help my skin appearance, it looked a bit more vibrant and hydrated. At almost $50USD it’s a bit pricey, but a little goes a long way so one jar will last a while, there’s no need to slather a ton of this on. There’s aren’t a lot of face masks for dry skin, and I’ve yet to see a mud mask for dry skin. I would buy this again especially in the winter months when my skin gets parched. Bonus points for being unscented.
