A mask a day keeps the wrinkles away…well perhaps not quite – sunblock, diet etc play a much bigger part, but if you find the right sheet mask to drench your skin with hydration and beneficial ingredients, and you do it often enough, then you are definitely going to be helping your skin when it comes to fighting against aging.
So onto these little beauties. I stocked up on a few different boxes of these whilst on a trip to Asia not too long ago and have finally gotten around to reviewing them along with the Korean brands I’ve been trying.
I used the Black Pearl mask as the last step in my skincare routine, after cleansing and toning, yet before applying serum or moisturizer. On my first attempt I couldn’t get the sheet mask to adhere around my nose and had to cut a line from the bottom of nose area to the eye flap so that I could let it sit where it needed to. This meant the sides of my nose missed out but I was glad to cover a more important area – my inner cheeks where the moisture was more required.
I let the mask do its things for 15 minutes and then removed and massaged in the excess. The best part is there was enough serum left to apply to my hands and arms. I didn’t notice much difference in brightening, but it definitely helped saturate my face (no difference on arms or hands) with moisture and I found I did not need to apply a night moisturizer afterwards. I did apply later again in the week with similar results and then decided to set these aside and try out the ‘Apple Polyphenol’ which I will write up about separately. All in all a good purchase!

I`ve been trying a whole bunch of different sheet masks, mostly from Japanese and Korean brands, and the Black Pearl Masks are the ones I keep coming back to. I think these work best for people with dry, combo-dry and mature skin. As I get older I realize there were things that would break me out or be inadequate in my 20`s and 30`s, but now work like a charm. This mask hydrates my skin like no other (*Note: I use serum, oil, and moisturizer before applying these. The function of sheet masks is to seal in your other beauty products, so if you have dry skin, be sure to moisturize). Don`t leave it on for more than 30 minutes! At some point it starts to dry out and reabsorb the moisture from your skin. No other brand gives you as much product: there is a ton of liquid left over in the pouch to do my chest and back. Some reviewers mentioned they felt an itching sensation with these: it`s interesting, because I`ve had that reaction with most of the sheet masks from Korean brands, especially The Face Shop and Innis Free. Guess you have to find out what works for you, but the good thing with these is that they`re reasonably priced, and they come in 5, 10 or 15 sheet packages, so it`s not like you`ve spent a fortune only to find out it doesn`t realy suit you. For me, these are the best and will keep repurchasing as long as they make them.

I was introduced to the MBD Black Pearl mask by a coworker earlier this year and since then I’ve been using the masks regularly. I do think it brightens up the face a little but what I love about this product is that after using the mask and massaging in the essence, I felt my skin was softer and hydrated. I tend to leave it on for about 40mins and my skin felt so hydrated I sometimes skip the moisturiser! I use the excess essence on my decolletage and elbows and it definitely softens the skin. I tend to alternate between MBD masks, yet the Black Pearl masks are the ones I gravitate to. Definitely one of the best ones I’ve used.
I use them every two days, sometimes daily depending on how my skin.

This mask did not work for me. Every time I used it, my skin got noticeably duller (is that even possible?). It also stinged during the process which is not a good sign. It even made my skin slightly itchy, which is a really bad sign since I have eczema. I think the formula for this mask was way too strong and had the opposite effect for me. I originally though I bought a knock off, that was how shocked I was with the results. it was the complete opposite of all the reviews I’ve read. I gave the rest away because it wasn’t working well for me.
It worked wonders on my friend’s mom though. She said it brightened her skin and she even went out to buy her own after box.

Generally this brand of mask works well for me , some more than the others . It is more moisturising compared to other flavours and it is wetter .

I tried the MBD hyaluronic acid mask and loved it so much I started researching the brand and which masks people liked the best. Seems this mask is a fan favorite, but it just didn’t work for me.
I left the mask on for a good 20 minutes, and immediately after removing it, I could tell that my skin was craving more hydration. It felt tight and a little itchy. I looked in the mirror, and didn’t see any noticeable brightness, other than the fact that my already rosy cheeks were rosier than usual… which was not the effect I was hoping for. I applied Elizabeth Arden 8 hour cream, as my skin was feeling quite dry.
The next morning, my skin felt fine. No longer dry, tight or itchy, but no better than any other morning. I shudder to think how it might have felt had I not used such an intense moisturizer.
I will probably use the remaining masks, and just ensure I use an intense moisturizer or oil immediately afterward… but I wouldn’t repurchase this item. I love the Aloe and Hyaluronic Acid masks by MBD, but this one just wasn’t working for my 33 year old, recently aging skin.

So I’m nearly through my pack of 10, and felt it was time to do a review.
This mask contains a LOT of essence, so what I’ve been doing is squeezing out the essence quite a bit (so it remains in the packet). Then, whatever’s left on the cloth, is more than enough for 1 mask session anyway.
I tried leaving it on for 1 hour but it was too much, 30 or 40 minutes is the best in my experience.
Even after 1 hour of having the mask on, it is STILL damp, so I tend to use the rest as a light body moisturizer, before sealing it in with a thick body lotion.
.
Then, in between mask session (which are twice or thrice a week) I use the leftover essence daily as a serum beneath moisturizer. This is the best method IMO because there is no wastage.
I have acne scars, as well as pigmentation and rough skin, which this mask helped improve drastically. It is also moisturizing, and the essence works really well under normal moisturizer (as a mild serum), helping the moisturizer absorb better, rendering dry skin tighter and more bouncy.

There is a cumulative effect with this mask, you get a lot of product, and it doesn’t aggravate my sensitive skin–that’s why i would repurchase.
Because the extracts in this work like BHAs/AHAs (in terms of results), you HAVE to use sunblock while using this mask and stay out of the sun if you’ve used the leftover essence as a serum, as I often have.

P.S. my skin is UBER sensitive and does well with these. It was with some trepidation I bought these, expecting a rash.
Don’t be deterred with frag/etc, because it may be that your skin tolerates it, like mine (which doesn’t do well with most skincare).
You could try to buy just 1 mask first, because if your skin likes it, it’s a great find!

I echo the review below. This feels moisturizing but leaves my skin scaley and almost rashy. Its 16 cdn for a box of 10 masks where i am so relatively cheap

I freaking LOVE this mask. The amount of serum in this mask was ridiculous! My skin was plump, hydrated & felt super soft. I took a before & after picture and I could see how much brighter and more vibrant my skin looked. This mask has become an instant HG must have in my skin regimen. This flavor is my first Mbd mask so I’m definitely going to buy several more to try out. Highly highly recommended!!!

I have a love-hate relationship with this one. No doubt it brightens, boy I still get a huge kick when I take it off and my skin is so bright it seems to have magically whitened in 20mins. I know I’m not imagining the effect because the newfound clarity really contrasts against my melasma making it appear darker. Let’s face it nothing is going to cure that in 20mins! However I find the brightening effect temporary, maybe a few hours a best which is a bit of a waste as I use it at night. By morning my skin is kind of rough, almost scaley. It hasn’t broken me out but I feel like it wants to, as my skin texture is slightly irritated and not as smooth as the mornings I wake up and haven’t used it. I’ve tried it out 10 times (1box) to make sure it’s not something else, but I can safely say my skin feels rough instead of moisturised the next day. I don’t find it very hydrating as it claims to be. In fact it’s one of the least hydrating sheet masks out there in my experience.
My Beauty Diary has a lot of great options though. The sheets come attached to a backing you must peel off which saves the awkward fiddling when you unwrap them. They are generously sized and round with well placed cuts to fit an array of fave shapes. The masks are drenched in liquid serum and stay very saturated the whole time applied. I’m very pleased with the brand, but unfortunately won’t be repurchasing this flavour as the temporary (albeit amazing brightening) effects don’t outweigh the rough results.
