Beautiful blackest black mascara that dries soft on the lashes, and of course packaging is so pretty … the perfume is so strong that it makes my eyes tear and I had to wash it off. So sad. And I loved the old diorshow that smelled like roses but this is just way too strong

I received a deluxe sample of this from Sephora so I can’t speak about the packaging. I gave it 5 stars because usually the packaging on YSL products is gorgeous. The formula on this is downright awful. There is a reason that this has been discontinued. It has fragrance in it, which is definitely a no-go if you have sensitive eyes. If you have sensitive eyes then you should just forgo this one completely. If any water touches this, it’s going to run like a Mo Fo. If you’re lucky enough to not sneeze or have any water touch your lashes, you’ll still have issues with this because it flakes. To expect someone to spend this much money on a mascara that has all of these problems is appalling. I didn’t even use up the sample.

I got this with my Sephora point a while back and I just wanted to point out that this mascara, along with the other one that I tried as a deluxe sample, had a strong perfume scent to it and gave me a reaction. My eyes were irritated and watery. I think I will just stay away from ysl mascaras from now on.

I’ve been wearing this for about three weeks and while another reviewer said it smudged on her, I haven’t had that problem – it has stayed in place from early morning to late evening without any smudging or flaking, even through days with high heat and humidity. That being said, this is a pretty ordinary mascara. There’s nothing special about it, certainly nothing to justify its very high price tag. You’d get the same performance from a drug store mascara (actually, some drug store mascaras are better than this) at a fraction of the price.

This mascara left me thoroughly unimpressed. The black color is not deep black and not glossy at all. Seems to provide very minimal length, curve or volume to my lashes. The brush is nothing special either. It’s indeed noticeable fragrance but the fresh scent didn’t bother me. Didn’t smudge on flake on me though and I’ll use it for layering.
Edit: A couple of months after opening it’s less wet and layers better so I get some length. Unfortunately this is the point where the tube dries out. Pity!

Disclaimer: I am currently using a deluxe sample from Sephora and the packaging is not the same as the full size. If packaging makes or breaks your decision, you are welcome to disregard my review. This review otherwise is speaking about the product itself.
Mascaras are one of those products that will be different from person to person. In my particular case, this mascara isn’t really cutting it for my needs. I am a contact lens wearer and my eyes tend to water somewhat easily, and I’ll get back to why this matters for context shortly.
I find this product is very black and the deluxe sample wand, if anything like the actual wand, is pretty good at coating lashes without getting too much on your eyelid. I have smaller eyes so the fact this does this with mine is pretty impressive to me. This product is supposed to be used for volumizing and separating, which are the two things I need most, but I don’t really feel like it accomplishes either. What it does very well, actually, is to lengthen. This is not something I need, so it’s lost on me.
I’ve been using this for a little over two weeks now and it clumps about as much as your average mascara. It’s not awful, but it’s not great at separating.
My two biggest problems with this product are the following, though:
1. It smudges. A lot. About 5-6 hours into wear, I notice the beginning of smudging and as you go throughout the day, the spots get progressively worse. Now, I know because I use oil as a moisturizer, this is more likely to occur, but previous mascaras I’ve worn (e.g. Tarte Lights, Camera, Lashes) did not smudge nearly as much as this does.
2. There is perfume in this mascara. Why. Why my lashes need to have a scent is beyond me (because I have yet to see someone smell someone’s eyelashes and I promise there is no market for this), but it is very strong when you first put it on. It goes away over time, but if you’re very sensitive, your eyes will water.
Throughout the day, I notice it also contributes to making my eyes burn a little. Because of this and how it works for me, this isn’t a product I’d purchase. It’s not necessarily a bad product, it just isn’t something that worked for me.
Pros:
– Very black
– (If the DS brush is the same as the full size:) Brush is great at getting lashes coated without going onto eyelids
– Great for lengthening
Cons:
– Perfume (WHY?)
– Smudges
– Not great for volumizing or separating
– Expensive at $29 (though, it is on par with other high-end brands) for something you “should only” be using for 3 mo.
